I have been working at Giant Eagle

    Pros

    I can't really state any

    Cons

The pay is horrible, the hours are low, impossible to get full time work and they have a million work rules that are ridiculous. They will fire anyone on the spot for eating something that is being throw away. Doesn't make sense but this company terminates so many people I am surprised people apply to work there when they go over to Walmart or Mickey D's and get more money and better treatment. A stronger union is needed as local 23 are a bunch of chumps who cave to the company demands.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Treat people better and put together a better workplace....not the workers fault you are losing business. Cut your prices as they suck. The CEO knows absolutely nothing about the business. Also they are firing men right and left the entire company is now run women.....it doesn't make sense.

I have been working at Giant Eagle full-time

    Pros

My coworkers are some of the best people I know and many have become friends outside of work.

    Cons

Merit increases are laughable; there is a complete lack of professional development. The company is trying to run lean but has far exceeded lean and delved into bare bones causing a complete absence of work-life balance. Morale is at an all-time low and people are constantly wondering when their department is the next to 'restructure' and/or have to interview for their own jobs.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Listen to your team. Really listen - and stop retaliating against those who have the courage to talk. You were great once, you can be again.

I have been working at Giant Eagle

    Pros

Cool meeting new people/customers. Customers can be friendly depending on where you work.

    Cons

For the stress that you deal with the pay isn't worth it, at all. Nobody cares about anyone else in the company. You're pretty much just a number. The store I worked at kept increasing sales, and increasing sales. We were rewarded with less and less hours. The busier we got, the less hours we were allowed to work with, so it got to the point where you were almost always alone. Orders would come in, you would be expected to put orders away, take care of customers, check in orders, and if you were lucky a handicapped person wouldn't need help pumping their gas. If they did you had to take care of that customer too. Not to mention you had to make sure everything was stocked as well, and take care of the usual cleaning. Entirely too much to do with not enough hours to work with. Expect to go home frustrated every night because it's not physically possible to get everything done, and you still get disciplined for it.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Give us more hours to work with, seriously. I get that you really don't care about the common employee, which is fine, but you have to realize that you're destroying employee morale by giving stores no hours. That in turn affects the customer's experience, and if you cut hours for one shift work falls back on other shifts. When I worked at a GetGo you created a hostile work environment for everyone at the store because nobody could get enough done, so thanks for that. Pretty horrible 2 years of my life.

I worked at Giant Eagle part-time (more than 8 years)

    Pros

Used to be a great place to work, good benefits, they cared if you had a good work ethic. Its changed.

    Cons

Management cares about numbers and their own bonuses. I will not name them here but there is sexual harassment going on in this company at store level. Management has said off color things to me and other women. I was penalized due to my speaking up. There have already been lawsuits.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Fire the Walmart rejects you brought in. Do a undercover boss type thing. Your store managers are worthless. Good long term employees are quitting because of the poor management and lack of direction.

    I worked at Giant Eagle

    Pros

Not really a lot of pros. They offer benefits. That is the nicest thing I can say.

    Cons

Since the new management at Giant Eagle has taken over, there has been a significant drop in their concern for ALL team members, including Management.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Take a hard look at the people that you already have that have been loyal but you treat unreasonably!!!

I have been working at Giant Eagle full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

You get a paycheck every week, that's about it.

    Cons

Where do I start.....I have been a manager or "team leader" as they call it for over 10 years. The company is a joke. They do not care about customers or anyone who works in the stores. They care about the bottom line, their profits. If you ever seen the commercial about the company being a family, it's a complete utterly lie. They have no advancement program for anyone. They will move you to a different store every 1-3 years, dorsnt matter how far it is, I was currently traveling 3 hours aday roundtrip and they dont give you anymore in your paycheck either. You have to know someone to even move up in the company, don't think hard work and dedication works...that's the mistake I made. You will never feel appreciated. Raises are once a year and minimal. Bonuses exist but are very miniscule (less than a paycheck for the whole year). I seen them fire people because they didnt like them because they had balls and said no. They vp says he doesn't care if you work 27 hours a day but you better get you work done. So there is no work life balance, you can't take a weekend day off. You will work a lot of nights and mid shifts. They continually think they are the only game in town, I was told that several times. Everyone in the company is miserable with upper management. The CEO doesnt know how to run this company (what's left of it)

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

You are not "the only game in town". Customers and employees know that...stop thinking they don't. Running double fuelperks is retarded, everyone just wants lower prices for the same food you get at Wal-Mart, shopnsave, aldis, and foodlion. Quit trying to get rich quick and put the money back in the customer pockets. I could go on and on but they don't care what I have to say or anyone else for that matter. You know that survey youhave on your rreceipt and you call in to give complaints? Yea we have meetings about it and they would read them and laugh (especially when a dozens of people would say "lower prices").

I have been working at Giant Eagle (more than 10 years)

    Pros

10% discount on giant eagle brands

benefits are through the union so they are decent, but you have to pay into the union for 13 MONTHS before you get anything

    Cons

management plays favorites, you can't get a full-time position unless you're a manager, even if you do get one, anyone hired after 1996 is subject to have their hours cut at any given time for any reason.

they hired SO MANY awful people from Tops!! the majority of store managers are from Tops and there's a reason that chain failed.

If you're not friends or family of management, good luck going anywhere!

They need to STOP thinking only about profits...the WORST thing about a "family-owned" empire like this is that all they care about is money in their pockets! Stop giving bonuses to overpaid store managers and then taking them away from already underpaid department managers!!!

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Listen to your employees--they know what they're talking about.

Treat employees with respect and you'll receive the same back.

I have been working at Giant Eagle part-time (less than a year)

    Pros

    Nothing. Zero. Zip. Zilch. Nada.

    Cons

Zero training (I'm even experienced in the grocery industry and they found a way to make the most simple things complicated), workplace hostility, union protects employees who bully, harass, and even threaten both customers and coworkers while management is too lazy to do the right thing, clique-ish unwelcoming coworkers, terrible pay. The way management approaches issues between employees feels like a court trial, especially to new employees, often favoring senior employees. Union feels more like a corrupt "Big Brother" who steals your lunch money than a coach in your corner. 6 hour shifts only allow ONE 15 minute break. Bad haphazard scheduling.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Grow a spine and deal with your employees who have numerous complaints, give some care toward training, make more balance between skilled and new employees to ensure customers are taken care of and work is being done, look into better wages, more protection for new employees who are often pushed away by senior employees.
