Former Employee - Industrial Placement (Medicinal Chemistry) in Stevenage, England (UK)

I worked at GlaxoSmithKline full-time (more than an year)

    Pros

Provided extremely valuable experience that is unattainable in any other environment. Allowed for guided personal development whilst also sufficient freedom was given to make it feel as if one was directly contributing towards a worthy goal.

    Cons

Uncompetitive compensation compared to similar companies. It was often observed that the people in control of the cancellation or continuation of a project were somewhat disconnected and not fully up to date with all the significant details and results. Industrial placement students often felt mistreated and undervalued with poor consistency between supervisors.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Provide better training to ensure greater homogeneity between supervisors.

I have been working at GlaxoSmithKline full-time (more than an year)

    Pros

Well supported by management. Work/life balance is exceptionally good. Respected (if a little distant) from the business. Reward is good overall, but base salaries are not as good as peers. Fantastic values, which the company genuinely lives (scandals are the result of very isolated and vehemently rejected behavior). High performing colleagues across the business.

    Cons

Bureaucracy is endemic. A slow moving company internally and strongly influenced by its scientific base (i.e. do everything technically properly without thinking about the commercial realities). Getting better, but some way to go. Career progression opportunities limited, but many people find a level that they are happy with and stay until retirement.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Be more confident about the company's future, continue upholding values and reduce bureaucracy.

I worked at GlaxoSmithKline full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Great package, trusted by management and opportunities. Given room to develop and grow, great links with other sites across the company.

    Cons

The local culture could be overwhelming on occasion, they were the largest employer in a small town with long serving staff, who had been through a lot of change in a short period.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Have more open discussions with the team, discuss one-to-one performance.

I worked at GlaxoSmithKline as an intern (more than an year)

    Pros

I was in a small team which meant I was trusted with a lot of responsibility and got to be involved in projects with senior management, supportive of personal development, moving around, training etc.

    Cons

Brentford as a location was a bit of a pain for commuting but very nice offices to make up for it, benefits were not extended to placement students

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Make it easier for placement students to be hired after graduating
