    Pros

    Total depends on which team you work in - some are great and deal with new/interesting projects, others are just keeping the lights on.

    Cons

    You find some "managers" have just been brought up by inertia/the vacuum of their managers being promoted and they're often not up to/suitable for their job.

    The 360 degree review is complete bull, managers have the power to change the score to whatever they want so even if you average in the upper percentiles they can change this so that you look useless (and this stays on your permanent record).

    Base pay, as always at goldman, is a little less than industry standard but no longer are they making it up with the bonuses they used to.

    Despite all their "lgbt/black/Asian" etc networks there's still prejudice at even a fairly senior level and reverse prejudice (people saying that an intern must be hired as they fit xyz profile).

    If you're looking to be a developer in London, forget it. All work is done by the low cost or "high value" as they prefer to call it centres (Bangalore in India). And woe betide anyone who finds fault with their work or question why projects are running 100% overtime and still nowhere complete.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Bring the work back to the uk, pay people what the rest of the industry do and listen to the people on the ground.

    Get rid of the middle management who know nothing of technology (struggle with simple SQL queries and can't even use excel or write a shell script). Who can't project manage, call avalanche method agile and don't have a clue what they're doing.

    Pros

    Good pay. Looks good on your resume. Up to date with technical trends. Focus on technology. You get to work with some very competent people and learn a lot.

    Cons

    It's a toxic culture. It's like swimming with the sharks. You sink or swim. It doesn't matter if you're good or bad at what you do. You have to literally be a shark to survive in that world. People will step on your face and crush you to impress the next middle manager up the line. OK, they pay really well if you climb up the ladder, but you have to be willing to sell your soul to the devil.

    Good learning experience from working in high pressure environment

    Cons

    Management don't understand how to motivate people or care about their happiness. This drives high churn and a feeling of discontent amongst many employees. Tempered by the likelihood that the GS brand will get them the job that they really want.

    Pros

    Name looks good on cv.
    Ability to work globally with wide variety of people.
    Good internal training facilities - classroom and e-learning courses and talks by internal/external industry experts.
    Gym has just been refurbished.

    Cons

    Pay is significantly down and now well under market rate (both base and overall total comp)
    Reviews are a joke - supposedly 360 degree but manager has total veto rights on everything and can skew review any way they like meaning you need to seriously brown nose to get ahead. Obviously contradicts the image of a meritocracy that they like to portray.
    Toxic environment due to understaffing and off shoring work (and lack of pay) - no development done in London any more. London is mainly used to manage offshore resources.
    Yearly 5% cull, somehow people never seem to get replaced. The way its done is not very good for team spirit as it doesn't all happen in one batch, rather is stretched out into 2/3 sessions weeks or even months apart.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Speak to the little people - they're not happy. Informal, anonymous (truely anonymous) surveys will give you an idea of what people are really thinking but people are often a little hesitant with the current surveys as they appear trackable.

    Be wary of Operations if you are Commercial or Opinionated as that wont be rewarded and you'll soon be frustrated

    Pros

    Great name and brand in the industry
    A lot of hardworking and smart colleagues who you can learn from
    Plenty of lectures, initiatives and guest speakers
    If you are junior your underpaid but if senior you are overpaid

    Cons

    Lives off its name and so knows most people are scared to leave
    No Independent thinkers just Yes men/women on the Operations side
    Juniors are worked extremely hard with the hours to match but underpaid compared to other companies particularly on the bonus side.
    Most junior staff don't have experience outside GS as they came straight from University to Grad Scheme so think the Intense culture is normal. External hires notice immediately that a lot of people have drunk the Kool Aid.
    Great if you are senior but if junior on the Operations side your career is not in your hands but the ability of your manager to promote your work well upwardly which means progression not meritocratic
    You basically spend your day as a call centre for the revenue generating functions so expect to pander to them no matter how junior they are. Remeber they own the PnL!!!

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    To Operations management you have a lot of talented juinior staff so let them play their part in the success of the company. Stop the micro managing and secrecy and stand up to the demands of the business when they don't serve to benefit the firm. Loosen the ranes on the experienced, ambitious and talented or they will move across to a revenue generating function or externally to find more responsibility.
