    I worked at Goodwill

    Pros

People really care about the mission of enabling others to gain work skills and improve their lives. A hand up not a hand out.

Most of the staff are very friendly and knowledgeable. Employees care about one another.

    Very good leadership training.

    Cons

It is a nonprofit so money is almost always tight.
It is a family operated business, which can lead to concerns about politics / lack of open and honest communication. Some of it is real and some of it is staff being paranoid. Bit perception is reality...

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Over-communicate!
Allow managers time to do the management aspects of their job.

I have been working at Goodwill part-time for less than a year

    Pros

The company has good morals and values their employees. Coworkers are friendly and seem happy to be there. Management is approachable and understanding. Both the employees and customers are extremely diverse; you get to see people from all walks of life here. Their mission--to put people to work--is clearly very successful.

    Cons

The pay is very low and there are hardly any benefits, especially if you're a part-time employee. It's often understaffed. You're expected to do a lot for not a lot of compensation. In addition, you AND your family and friends are not allowed to shop at the store you work at. There's also not much opportunity for advancement.

I worked at Goodwill full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

Great learning experience while working in a fun culture.

    Cons

AS time went on Senior managements goals became unrealistic. They did not practice what they were preaching (they is upper management). Organization became to focused on the money.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Buckle down on what was built. The company is expanding beyond its means and wants to blame those for its own undoings. Focus on the now.

I have been working at Goodwill

    Pros

Cool finds all the time, fun/interesting customers and coworkers. Super fast paced and you will never have a dull moment!

    Cons

The store is constantly a mess. Cleaning up discusting messes (feces, urine, vomit) just to name a couple! Theft is a huge issue that can be frustrating at times. Merchandise has to be on the sales floor for at least a week before you're allowed to purchase it.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Communicate communicate communicate!

I worked at Goodwill part-time for more than a year

    Pros

The good thing about working at goodwill is the steady pay.
I also worked with some friends I'd gone to high school with which was enjoyable.
Typically, with two weeks notice, you will get whatever requested time off you need. So long as the dates you ask for are not too much or too often.

    Cons

The managers at my location seemed to be on a power trip. Very often a manager would come up to you and ask you to preform one task, then a few minutes later ask for something else to be done. Normally that'd be no big deal, but later on that day you'd get scolded for an incomplete task regardless as to whether you pointed out that you weren't finished with your original assigned task before being moved elsewhere.
I had a stalker follow me around my store that my managers did very little about. It wasn't until he left me a love letter that anything was taken seriously.
Like any retail store customers can be quite a handful. I once had a video game thrown at me because our return policy didn't allow for them to be returned. I also knew of another girl who had the same thing happen to her only she got shoes thrown at her head.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

I often felt the managers and cashiers were not on the same team. Perhaps team-building would've been hepful.

I worked at Goodwill full-time for more than a year

    Pros

The pro is that can get a discount from other stores because they are a non profit organization. You get some work experience under your belt. They will let you work in multiple departments . Very easy job categorize and colorize the floor was very easy for me. I was the team lead on the sales floor.

    Cons

Cons- The pay is very small 7.50. The managers don't do work. They managers will put a lot of work on you. Under staffed.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Tell corporate to pay more and maybe goodwill will be able to keep staff.

I have been working at Goodwill part-time for more than a year

    Pros

You meet interesting people everyday, and if your a people person you will love working here. You get to see all the great things people donate, and sales... Sales?? always low prices.

    Cons

The down side to this job is only standing up all day working long hours and only having a thirty minute break. But they work with you as far as needing time off, and accommodating you to whatever it is to be comfortable. They have taught me good team morals and that it is a good work ethic to be at.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Looking at expanding the store in the next five years.

I have been working at Goodwill

    Pros

Everyone here is great to work with. Its a fun environment and pretty laid back. I work at the home office. They are currently building a new building.

    Cons

It's a non-profit so pay isn't great. The insurance is killing me. I can't afford it. The plan had an extremely high deductible. People can be whiny and compassion about stupidest things. Repetitive work.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Seek better insurance and pay better. Turnover rate is too high. When is your time just go ahead and retire.

I have been working at Goodwill full-time for more than 10 years

    Pros

Decent pay, good benefits, good people and you help the community. I love what goodwill stood for, "helping the community and those that might be a bit less fortunate. there is a mission.

    Cons

no weekends off, executive staff have no real knowledge on how to operate a retail business. 45+ hours a week, salary no overtime. under appreciated as management.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

know what your doing and you'll be fine, wing it and you wont last long. its all about the revenue at the end of the day and how you manage it.
