Bureaucratic and top-down, but fair overall.

Sales Associate (Former Employee) San Jose, CA

ProsGWSV will hire anyone (except for pedophiles), so almost anyone can get on here. They do test for drugs, though, and you cannot use even medical marijuana. The company is very well-run and organized, and as an employee you get 20% off all merchandise, even donated cars & trucks.

ConsSince they do hire almost anyone, they are very strict and rule-bound. A very good lead was fired after he requested an additional two weeks off for an injured foot, even though it was a doctor's recommendation... he was told that he "could not be accommodated". Also, since they recently experienced a bout with insolvency (near bankruptcy) they run the stores very lean and mean i.e. short-staffed and short-tempered, with a real focus on numbers. Furthermore, your first two weeks training with them are virtually unpaid.

Advice to Senior ManagementUnderstand that you have people working extremely hard for very low pay and no benefits, and appreciate them a little bit more.

Good experience that will keep you working hard

Donation Attendant (Former Employee) Gilbert, AZ

ProsHard work keeps you physical. The day goes by pretty quickly. Routine work. I liked operating the Big Joe.

ConsHard work and long shifts. There are a lot of things to organize.

Advice to Senior ManagementManagement assumes new hires know what to do because they went through training. However training gives you a run down of the companies culture and not actual job training. Going into the first day, many are clueless on the daily operations.

It was a definite learning experience. There was great opportunity for team leadership experience.

    Processor (Former Employee) Hays, KS

ProsThey provide opportunities for team leadership, working in tandem with others on your team to meet a deadline or quota, and opportunities for moving up in the company.

ConsThere are inconveniences in the warehouse such as too hot in the summer or too cold in the winter. The warehouse job is dirty with heavy lifting.

Advice to Senior Managementsometimes in order to meet a quota, the management needs to step up and pitch in.

I really liked the co-workers I worked with, the atmosphere, how we helped each other out, and the fun that we had.

Donation Attendant (Former Employee) Glendale, AZ

ProsEveryone looks out for you and care about you. They want you to do your best just as they do for themselves. You work hard, but you have a real sense of accomplishment and can have fun when it is a good time. The good news with the Donation Attendant position is that I had at least one sometimes two or more attendants with me on certain days, which made the job easier especially on Saturdays, our busiest day.

ConsIt is very physical so it is good to know this before considering the Donation Attendant position. Sometimes, you have to lift heavy t.v., couches, loveseats, and other heavy items. Also, it involves a lot of multi-tasking so get ready to help several customers at once outside and there are processors that need help on the inside as well with changing the bins out and putting new ones in with the pallet jack and forklift.

Advice to Senior ManagementI am grateful for the company culture that we had and the quality of the people. Overall, I think most of the employees were reliable and dependable. I think the compensation was about the average that I had received before at another Goodwill job, around the $8-$9 per hour range. I think they encouraged us to have goals, reach out for personal growth, whether at the workplace, school/university, or other ways.

Overall, the year and a half I have been a part of the Goodwill team has been good.

Cashier (Current Employee) West Gastonia, NC

ProsFriendly co-workers and seeing how someones donations make a difference in someone else's life that truly needs them.

Conscustomers want everything for .49 cents or .99 cents when items are definitely worth more and the company needs to make money off those items that can be sold for more

Advice to Senior Managementbe fair to all employees, dont be rascist.

Good hoping for better soon :-)

Program Manager (Current Employee) Rockville, MD

ProsGood pay and benefits. They hire smart folks to grow the work and have a great team that tries to lift morale and take suggestions from employees.

ConsUnfortunately there are few opportunities for upward mobility and there are no clear defined career pathways within the organization although career pathways are part of the mission.

Great place to see people being helped out and is a non-profit company.

Regional Retail Operations Manager (Former Employee) Kansas City, MO

ProsGrowth and great people to work with. Great mission statement and they do all they can to meet the statement.

ConsMassive corporate lay off. I feel this hurt the growth and trust of the company during the turn around of the company name in this region.

Advice to Senior ManagementAs a manager, I enjoyed the positive nature of all managers while I was there. All worked as a Team.

fabulous agency that does so much good

    Anonymous Employee (Former Employee)

ProsYou know you are doing good work by helping people with disabilities find work through training.

ConsIt is difficult to advance due to lack of career ladders and limited training for the retail store staff.

Advice to Senior ManagementProvide training to front line managers.

Flexible job that worked with college life

    Cashier (Former Employee) Sunbury, OH

ProsGreat Management, Wonderful manager where I worked.

I received two raises in the course of a year and a half, based on my work performance-they really cared about and respected the employees who deserved it.

They also dealt with problems efficiently, and listened to employee concerns.

ConsPerhaps a little too much expectation with some of the work, and some volunteers should have been screened a little more carefully(some were convicted felons doing community service, and we would only find out until after we had started working with them.)

Advice to Senior ManagementTell your employees what kind of volunteers they will be working with.
