I worked at Google as an intern (less than a year)

    Pros

Lots of activities, and plenty of time for training courses. Personal calls, printing etc. allowed; even let me borrow an Ethernet cable when I arrived without one. "Tech Talks" that offer a chance to ask Larry and/or Sergey questions.

    Cons

I was a Java programmer not seated near project teammates or other Java programmers, and was on a floor with no cubicle walls. Relied on headphones for noise control whenever I needed to think deeply (which, as an undergrad intern, was more often than for full-time engineers).

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

More emphasis on placing teammates together. More support needed in implementing OSS authentication clients -- would eliminate the need for an F/T engineer on many small internal apps. Employees with Asperger's/ADHD need walled cubicles to control distractions.

Former Employee - Intern In Sales in Mountain View, CA
Former Employee - Intern In Sales in Mountain View, CA

    I worked at Google

    Pros

-Great Benefits- food, gym, time off, good hours
-Lots of opportunities for interns to sit in on meetings, get contact with higher-ups
-Strong intern program in business and engineering
-Can be proud to work at Google, your friends and family will recognize your achievement and looks great on a resume
-Flexibility to work in different departments after a year or two with the company

    Cons

-Actual day to day work not as exciting as it seems (lots of Excel, etc)
-Lots of gossip inside and outside the company that account managers are just "glorified telemarketers"
-Does not pay as well as finance internships though Google would like to compete with these sorts of internship programs at elite schools and campuses
-Does not seem like a place you stick around too long; a young environment with lots of movement and attrition.
-Recruiting process slow, flawed, and disorganized

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Improve recruiting and hiring process- it is the first part of the company to which potential employees are exposed!!

    Cons

A great place for software engineers, but not researchers

I have been working at Google

    Pros

Total compensation is very good. Benefits are good, too. Free food, drinks, and stuff. Very flexible work environment. Flat hierarchy of management. Huge codebases to start with. Good for software engineers to develop skills. Good to put on resume.

    Cons

Work pressure is big. The company likes code better than research ideas. Research progress is slow due to the constraints on the tools.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Google research can be more dedicated on advancing the state-of-the-art to compete with other industrial research labs such as Microsoft Research and IBM T.J. Watson Research Center.

    I worked at Google

    Pros

People are smart and very friendly, the perks are unbeatable, the pay is fair for corporate world, and there are always new interesting things going on.

    Cons

Way too many meetings (can fill half of your daily calendar), sometimes poor internal information management (getting info on an earlier project can only be done by talking to someone who may be gone for weeks, rather than any centralized info mgmt center).

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

I'm sure many of these things have been improved over the past few years, but I think the toughest thing will be giving people opportunities for growth, especially with such a young management team.

    Great summer internship

    I worked at Google

    Pros

The perks are just great, no downside, especially as an intern where I didn't really have a lot when I came. You can get or do almost anything on campus (laundry, food, car repairs, etc.). Get to work on cool/challenging projects with other smart people. I was able to make an impact almost immediately on this that were very far reaching throughout all of Google. I was also able to suggest additional improvements and implement them. This to me was amazing giving an intern the ability to suggest features and then go ahead and make them a reality. I would definitely suggest Google as a great place to intern.

    Cons

Certain groups are isolated from others building to building so there isn't a lot of collaboration between teams. This sucks because I'd like to know what other projects others are working so I can know see what's going on (a lot looks like it is behind closed doors). Work-life balance doesn't really exist, as working 10+hours a day seemed to be expected with people working 8-9 hours at work and then 2+ hours at home at night. The conversion process from intern to full-time doesn't seem to be very fair and open to what's actually going on. There were very few actual intern events, I had to organize a lot myself to actually meet other interns and not just code all summer.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Don't stress working so much and be more open in general.
