    Pros

Spacious offices, good salary, benefits, more life than work, lots of socializing in the atrium.

    Cons

    - Little chance for moving up the ranks if you enter at the lower levels
    - Favouritism for professional development and training (the French outnumber here in terms of opportunities)
    - Older staff members take credit for the work of the younger ones

    Advice to Management

Take performance management and measurement seriously. It is obvious to all that career mobility depends on how you look rather than what you can do.

    Pros

Other than a paycheque there is no good reason to work there.

    Cons

Highly stressful environment. Management bullies employees. Employees routinely use immoral methods to track down and harass general public until they provide census information.

    Advice to Management

There is an unscrupulous culture in Statistics Canada's Census management. What a disgrace to Canada.

    Pros

Good pay and benefits ...way better than most of the private sector .. flex hours and work from home policies so you can do whatever you want whenever you want and still get paid.( i.e fight your way through COSTCO with hundreds of other public servants during the work day) Almost impossible to get fired once you're in. Unbelievable pension!

    Cons

New core competency requirements that public servants need to show integrity and respect, think things through, work effectively with others and take initiative and be action-oriented are totally outrageous! Thank goodness the unions are taking the Government to court to fight these requirements!

    Pros

Immediate supervisor and co-workers were good people.

    Cons

The pay is aweful. Most of the politicains are the worst sort of people you could imagine working for or with. The building is dilapidated. The benefits don't exist. No room for advancement . Avoid at all costs. The hours are unpredictable and usually inconvientiant to a student's schedule.

    Advice to Management

Raise the pay or cut the workload.

    Pros

    Generous benefits and time off.

    Cons

You lose your mind, soul and ability to think for yourself.

    Advice to Management

Recognize that as long as you keep making everything other than talent as the key determinants of employee promotion into senior positions, you will continue to generate a culture that celebrates mediocrity and risk aversion.
