I have been working at Guidance Software full-time (less than an year)

    Pros

High salary, food and event employee perks, brand new office building, minimal time expectations, hands-on founder/CTO. Admirable willingness to radically alter operational structure.

    Cons

Very top heavy, many superfluous layers of management. Little to no formal training for new employees. A few bad apples concentrated in the doc department. Surprising lack of interdepartmental coherence. The worst UI imaginable, terrible documentation. Atitude that everything can and will change all the time - not much certainty.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

It just takes one to screw in a light bulb.

I worked at Guidance Software full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

There are interesting engineering problems to solve within the company and its possible to work on many different products. There is a cafeteria on the fifth floor which is discounted for employees and has good food. There are some standing desks although it's not guaranteed that you will get one. The people in the company are very friendly and it's possible to talk directly to customers if you attend the training courses on the second floor. There are whiteboards everywhere which makes collaborating with other people very easy.

    Cons

Historically there has been a big divide in R&D, but this appears to be changing. There is no option to work from home.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Make the cafeteria free for employees. Free food makes everyone happy.

I have been working at Guidance Software full-time (more than an year)

    Pros

Work with technology and products that actually make a difference in the world. Head down to the Training room on the 3rd floor of HQ and see investigators being taught basic and advanced techniques in digital investigations from P2P file-sharing investigations to corporate fraud and yes, counter-terrorism.

If moving the needle in society means something to you, this company has the clout and the resources to put you in a position to make a difference.

    Cons

We're going through growing pains. Much of middle management, much maligned in other reviews, is gone. "groupthink" acolytes are nervous. We're undertaking some awesome stuff, but we still have to deal with the past.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Focus on alignment of organizations outside of R&D with what the products are meant to do.
Loyalty is for canines. Sentimentality is for your long lost flame. Make the tough decisions and earn your spot in the pantheon of execs that made a choice and lived by it.

I worked at Guidance Software full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

Good people to work with, compensation is sufficient, most managers connect well with employees.

    Cons

Bottom line trumps everything, internal resources spread thin, products could open up from specialized markets to more mass media / general sales.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Need to achieve a better balance of focus on customer markets - the small customer is what made the company thrive and deserves to have more attention shifted back to them.

I worked at Guidance Software full-time (more than an year)

    Pros

    a. Extremely knowledgeable, diverse, nice people.
    b. Pleasant Pasadena location.
    c. The company owns the Forensic Software market.
    d. Some managers are awesome, among the best in the industry. (I was one of the lucky ones that had a good manager).
    e. Very productive working environment: very few meetings, fantastic coding style, deep code reviews.
    f. Cinema, barbeque from time to time.
    g. I'm an industry veteran and Guidance was the place where I've learned the most.

    Cons

    a. Promotions to leadership/management positions are rare, when they happen it is in a opaque way.
    b. Some managers are way below average.
    c. People get fired constantly for "butting heads with the wrong person".
    d. Real estate near Pasadena is expensive (not that Guidance can do anything about it).

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Train your middle managers, so they learn to deal with people. Create your own management talent pool, don't go always after people from outside for leadership positions. Guidance has a fantastic workforce, treat them with respect. Disrespectful managers should be provided proper guidance (no pun intended). Allow for easier lateral movement in the company.

    Pros

Friendly staff, great location, nice clean offices.

    Cons

Low morale, high turnover, this company is known for downsizing ALOT.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Be more aware and appreciative of the "little people" doing most of the work.

    Pros

Brand. Potential exposure to interesting forensic projects.

    Cons

In reality you can end up doing more litigation support (eDiscovery) than forensic work.
