I have been working at Guidewire

    Pros

Good place to work and build a career if you last long enough.
Good co-workers albeit hiring standards seem to be dropping.
Excellent stock plan if you last long enough to have it vested.

    Cons

Layoffs are not performance based! You boss and your boss's boss will have no idea until the day it actually happens. As such people who have never worked with you will make the decision.
The same day the layoffs took place we were asked to share the available positions in our social networks! Thus, at the same time there are layoffs there are positions available but no attempt to re-assign individuals! Instead, when one poses the question you are told: "You are welcome to re-apply"--do you know how silly that sounds?

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Get the opinion of your lower management on layoffs--I lost an excellent colleague and I can think of one or two other individuals that were not as productive.
Forecast better--stop going on hiring sprees followed by layoffs just a few months later.

I worked at Guidewire full-time for less than a year

    Pros

Good product, nice colleagues to work with, good work life balance.

    Cons

Boring technology stack. It is partly due to the industry.

Company is growing and a lot of chop and change is happening right now. Job security is bad. Management is completely callous about its employees career interests. All that matters is its business interests and that is very evident from the utter disregard for its employees.

Top and Middle management is rude and dishonest. Be ready for a roller-coaster ride. Realignment happens all the time. What you do in actual job WILL BE different from what you were told during the interviews.

If you are ambitious about your career, don't join this company.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Be honest and transparent. Treat your employees well.

I have been working at Guidewire

    Pros

The business is doing very well and the company has many satisfied customers. People care about their job and making real contribution to make Guidewire's products the best in the market. Coworkers are exceptionally friendly and willing to help each other.

    Cons

In the past two years the company grew in very fast speed, the small company characters have disappeared. The organization is not flat anymore. The management has no training or vision. There is no management culture and principles. On the surface the company has core values but the values are not followed. The middle managements formed a alliance that has all the political posturing that you can see in a big company and the interview process is controlled by that group.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Listen to the employees and review the interview process.

    I worked at Guidewire

    Pros

Exceptionally friendly team of professionals to work with. Everyone really cares about their job and their contribution to make Guidewire a leader in the insurance software space. Guidewire keeps its promises to its customers, so customer satisfaction is very high. The products are stellar and something you can be very proud to sell.

    Cons

Management has no formal training running a company of Guidewire's size and it shows. The founders needed to back out in 2008/09 and let more experienced hands guide the ship. The management team is full of political posturing and this effects team performance. Management in the marketing team is especially lacking with poor decision making, lack of follow-through and zero long term strategy. Sales whims drive all marketing efforts so nothing ever feels completed. Moral is very low among the ranks with respect to their view of management.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

To the founders: Thank you for starting such an amazing company - now it's time to move on. Talk to your employees and really listen to what they are saying. Your actions no longer match your values. Too many good people have left the company, either on their own or forced out, because you have failed to see the bigger picture. You once had a dream for Guidewire - that dream is fading fast - and it doesn't have to.

I have been working at Guidewire

    Pros

Small company with lots of talented individuals, a flat organization, and a culture of trying to delegate power to individual teams. As a model of how to structure a modern engineering organization that can be flexible and responsive to customer needs, Guidewire is a decent example.

    Cons

Guidewire investors and executives, like most startups, are greedy. The compensation package is rather week, as are the options offered. Generally speaking, startups offer strong salaries because it is unclear whether the stock will ever have any real value, or even if employment will be assured for long. Guidewire offered rather low salary, especially for a startup, ignoring the risk factor associated with working for a startup, and stock options were pathetic.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Recognize the value team members provide, compensate accordingly, and if you are committed to a flat organization, then implement a rotation program so that everyone can participate in management and leadership opportunities.
