Great, friendly, helpful environment

Sales Associate (Current Employee)
Fort Collins, CO

I have been working at Guitar Center part-time for less than a year

ProsEveryone that works for Guitar Center is generally passionate about music and very friendly and helpful. Everyone is not just trying to make a sale but they are trying to help people get into music or follow their passions. Love working for them

ConsThe pay could be better. The Guitar technician, at least at our store, is overworked to death! The clienteling that we have to do is pretty annoying and some of the corporate guidlines we have to adhere to are annoying, too. Nothing that bad though.

Advice to Senior ManagementKeep doing what you're doing!

Requires Dedication and Talent

Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)

I have been working at Guitar Center full-time for more than 5 years

ProsCompensation based on performance. This job will not pay you well for being a music enthusiast and cool person. It pays for performance, either in sales and customer service or executing operations needs.

Third party review to insure competitive base rate pay for associates.

A growing company. For the past several years Guitar Center has been opening new locations, and expanding its services, including instruction, rentals, and band and orchestra equipment. This means more positions, more available promotions every year, and more kinds of jobs.

Interesting and fun work environment with boutique merchandise, customers and other employees with the same interests.

Industry leader. With the biggest, most successful company in musical instrument sales, you are working with the best. They will train you throughout your career on how to organize and serve your clients, and close deals.

Outstanding discounts for employees on musical equipment.

Benefits including group health insurance, paid vacation time, and retirement planning.

ConsCommission based compensation is not stable enough for some employees.

This is a job that requires talent and skill in sales and often as a musician as well. Hard work is necessary, but some people are good at sales, some are not.

Currently no profit sharing or company match to 401(k).

Promotion may require willingness to relocate.

Currently owned by parent company Bain Capital.

Although Guitar Center's finances are rated as stable and every store in the chain is profitable, it does not have the highest financial rating available and some question it's ability to pay it's debt to Bain Capital and go public again.

Advice to Senior ManagementConsider more salaried management positions in stores.

Reintroduce profit sharing to associates.

Offer company match to retirement contributions.

Continue to prioritize a move back to a publicly traded company rather than remaining a subsidiary of Bain Capital.

My experience at Guitar Center was very positive

Senior Inventory Analyst (Former Employee)
Westlake Village, CA

I worked at Guitar Center as a contractor for more than a year

ProsRelaxed atmosphere, friendly workforce, many employees are also musicians.

ConsThe only downside was the commute. Going to work was about 1/2 hour. Coming home 1-2 hours.

Advice to Senior ManagementBeef up your IT infrastructure to be able to handle the number of employees and stores so that the systems operate quicker and are less prone to interruptions.

Retail Music Exposure.

Assistant Manager (Former Employee)
Glen Burnie, MD

I worked at Guitar Center full-time for more than a year

ProsExposure to latest tech in the music, audio and lighting industry.

ConsCommission based pay, with high merchandising requirements during sales time.

Advice to Senior ManagementWork on increasing practical skill development along with the computer based teaching. Placing gear from time to time when updating a gears display area or adjusting the lighting trussing or sound wall does not always develop the team members true knowledge of operations in the gear. The ability to smartly demonstrate a few key features on some gear can really set up a sold sale and possibly give the customer a jump start into needing and using the gear, possibly reducing the returns on high end (often possibly a bit overwhelming learning step) gear (especially in keys, computers (VST/recoriding production/sound systems).
