    Pros

    Co-Workers
    Atmosphere
    Time-Off Policies
    Employee Discounts

Great company to work for. Loved building customer relations, doing product demonstrations. Just an all around great job.

    Cons

    Call-Sheets
    Competitive Nature of Co-Workers/Assistant Managers
    Undermining Sales by Assistant Managers

AM's can sell things from out of your department without you having a say, making you no commission. AM's used to take full advantage of this and sell hundreds to thousands of dollars from under you or take a cut in the commission percentage because they told you that you "have to." Working in a department like drums (like I did) you're struggling to make commission on a monthly basis. It's just a cheap shot and unprofessional.

    Pros

I would say the best part about working here is the amount of really cool people you get to meet. There are tons of talented musicians out there, all with really interesting backgrounds. Another thing is the discount. WHOOO MAN. That thing is sick. Pay just above base cost for almost everything (minus apple and bose).

    Cons

I'm gonna keep this short, but I think all employees can agree. The new CEO has really changed the company in a matter of a month it seams. The labor has been cut unnecessarily company wide, managers are now calling in, getting written up when they were always GREAT people and managers. An ex-CEO of a sporting goods super company does not belong with what was an amazing music store.

I have been working at Guitar Center

    Pros

I work with some of the most talented people in the industry.

    Cons

    poor communication company wide
excessive time taken to make time sensitive decisions.
material deadline dates are more times than not pushed or excessively late

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

I would like upper management to recognize work performance and compensate accordingly. The company is way too top heavy in regard to the more than comfortable wages - even decent wages remain out of reach for those of us who actually work and make things happen. I really think the company needs to take a serious look at increasing wages to equalize the increased cost of living for everyone.

    Pros

The best environment for a musician. You get to work with other musicians every day and the wealth of knowledge you can gain in the company and from others is outstanding.

I worked at Guitar Center full-time (more than a year)

    Pros

The discounts are great, learning and trying all of the new gear before it comes out is always wonderful. I'm sure it's not as important, but personalizing and watching movies in the break room during lunch. The managers were pretty understanding if you had a show or something came up last minute and would try to work with you on getting coverage.

Most of my customers were awesome, and treated me with respect, but there's always a few who get nasty, or demand a discount (among other things). I'm not sure if I got lucky with my store, but for a while I was the only female employee there, and all of my guys would back me up if ever a situation arose. If I felt uncomfortable, I could let them know without feeling ashamed of myself, if a customer implied I didn't know what I was talking about because of my gender, they would politely correct them in a professional manner (i.e. "I'm actually more of a Gibson guy myself, if you're looking for a Strat she probably knows more than I do about the specific models you're looking at.")

    Cons

It can be difficult to move up, as that only occurs when someone leaves or transfers. The only thing I will say is that I noticed a few people were sort of fast tracked and moved up, where perhaps the better move would to bring someone from another store in. Also, there was not as much training that went into teaching people how to manage effectively. I saw a few people who let the power rush go to their heads.

Pay was a bit difficult, but it was still in the process of changing and evolving while I was there.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Invest time in training managers properly rather than throwing them into the fire to figure it out for themselves.
