    Pros

You get a feel for different people working in the music industry because they are often customers of Guitar Center.

    Cons

The focus is on increasing sales, and the music gets lost in the mix.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Keep the love of music at the center and your business will flourish with happier employees and customers.

    Pros

It's a music-related gig, you may get your next job from a connection here if you aren't interested in continuing and good employees are afforded the opportunity to move around the country and still have a job. Health insurance isn't bad, but time off does get weird depending on where you work and your supervisor

    Cons

There isn't the tremendous earning potential that there used to be. The company seems to have a bit of an identity crisis on what it wants to be sometimes. The retail/web crossover selling is one of the company's growing pains, which is hard for the people in the middle of it all right now.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Figure out what the modern GC is going to be and just do it. No other retailer does the monster-truck radio ads anymore and only discount houses do a sale every month - get with the times and just stop it. It'll hurt at first, but ultimately it is better for the health of the company.

    Pros

People! Music! Cool gear! Every inventory delivery is like Christmas.

    Cons

It's still a retail job with quotas. If you think you're gonna sign up and play guitar all day, you're gonna hate this job.

    Pros

Everyone so far has been really helpful and totally down to help me get going! I get to spend all day around the things I love! The management team is awesome and very informative. No one has made me feel unwelcome.

    Cons

Some people are not there to work. All they do is ring people up, and stand around.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

I think that my store management is doing a good job as far as I can see.

    Pros

Coworkers all have a passion for music, making it a fun atmosphere most of the time.

    Cons

My position paid hourly, minimum wage. Like any retail store holidays are insane. I would be asked to work longer hours on the spot. Working at the door long hours and not allowed to sit until break is tough.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Get the door person a chair.

    Pros

Employee discounts rule and they work around your schedule if you play out often.

    Cons

The store manager sets the mood for the store. Find a store that you enjoy going in to and see if employees are happy. If not, the store manager probably sucks.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Make sure everyone knows the core values and principles. If not, your entire team will not be aligned.

Pay is laughable even for the top-selling salesmen, personal growth within the company was constantly hindered by management.

Current Employee - Sales Associate in Fort Collins, CO

    Pros

Everyone that works for Guitar Center is generally passionate about music and very friendly and helpful. Everyone is not just trying to make a sale but they are trying to help people get into music or follow their passions. Love working for them

    Cons

The pay could be better. The Guitar technician, at least at our store, is overworked to death! The clienteling that we have to do is pretty annoying and some of the corporate guidlines we have to adhere to are annoying, too. Nothing that bad though.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Keep doing what you're doing!
