    Company at a major crossroads

    Employee (Current Employee)
    Savannah, GA

ProsGulfstream has a world-class brand and is a highly-respected leader in its industry. Its market leadership is bolstered by a highly-skilled workforce, an obsessive focus on customer service, and a massive influx of resources from parent company General Dynamics. The company is also more than ten years into a massive growth trend that shows no sign of slowing.

Salaries are very good, benefits are great, and honestly, it's cool to work on a product as unique as Gulfstream's. Consequently, there are opportunities to do things with this company that are rare or nonexistent with most companies.

ConsThe company is at a crossroads now, due to its prolific and rapid global growth. To put it bluntly, the scope and prominence of the company has, because of this rapid growth, outgrown the skills of its leadership at some levels. The company, therefore, must evolve to maintain its leadership position and learn to manage growth better, or it will fall behind its competitors.

Twenty or thirty years ago, the company was relatively small, and operated like a family. Most employees were hired from the local area, which was not (and is still not) a world-class incubator for talent. As the company grew, many local hires (many without college degrees) went on to become managers and directors within the company.

The company does not have a cohesive culture across all of its locations. The senior leadership is aloof and does not regularly interact with front-line employees. There is no passion or vision coming from leadership about where the company is going. There is a rampant "culture of fear" that dissuades employees from providing critical feedback openly. Dissenters are fired. Messages from senior leadership are confusing: they say safety and quality are most important, but schedule and revenue always win out.

Advice to Senior ManagementPrioritize daily interactions with front-line employees to foster an environment where it is safe to offer critical feedback openly. Hire top talent from world-class organizations. Cultivate leaders who have empathy and emotional intelligence. Inspire your teams and give them a reason be excited about working at the world leader in business aviation.

Company with great potential hampered by hapless human resources department

    Manager (Current Employee)
    Savannah, GA

Pros- competitive pay (though distribution is questionable)
    - great upside growth potential for company

Cons- human resources is mired in the past, unable to provide any meaningful leadership
    - selective application of company policies allows protection for nepotism hires and the "old guard"
    - no defined strategy for company
    - Savannah, home to backwards thinking

Advice to Senior ManagementSeriously consider firing most of HR. They're clueless. They may have been okay for the company 10 years ago, but they're not equipped to help lead the company into the future.

    Good experience overall.

    Anonymous Employee (Former Employee)
    Savannah, GA

ProsGood company benefits. They offer lots of workshops for employees to take. They have wellness programs and give back to the community. Offer fun opportunities and great benefits for interns. The name of the company really perks ears anywhere you go.

ConsFrom the website alone, you can tell some processes seem pretty outdated. Cliquey work environment. Not much mentoring going on for interns in my department. Some departments get worked down to the bone, some make up work to keep themselves busy.

    – I'm optimistic about the outlook for this company

    Policies

    Structural Mechanic (Current Employee)
    Savannah, GA

ProsGood pay and benefits for savannah.

ConsThey don't follow there own policies unless they want to! They just blow people off when they want to and there's nothing you can do about it.

Advice to Senior ManagementFollow the policies you have written in black and white no matter what the title of the employee!!

    The Grass is Not Greener

    Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)

ProsI work with some great, smart people. Pay and benefits are good.

ConsUnfortunately, those great, smart people are not usually the ones promoted. The sycophants and "yes men" are, however. And when I say "yes men," I literally mean men. Women can forget about getting ahead here. Senior leadership does not value the skills we bring to to the table. And work-life balance is a joke. There is alot of lip service paid to safety and quality, but we all know the bottom line is schedule and money.

    Engineering

    Engineer (Current Employee)
    Savannah, GA

ProsGreat pay and benefits. Great product

ConsNo work life balance, Mandatory OT in some cases, over worked and schedule driven. No training, if you don't know it coming in you are on your own. They tout that you have career opportunities and you do, but only if you are a part of the "Good Ole Boy" network. If you complain they will try to find a way to get rid of you. HR is there for the Management team not for the employees so going to them with your complaints is a waist of time.

Advice to Senior ManagementTrying to change the culture will only happen when you stop promoting the individuals who as some managers have described as "A Raging Bull In A China Shop".

Good for skill development, but engineers pushed to exhaustion and atmosphere overly focused on competition.

    Technical Specialist I (Current Employee)
    Savannah, GA

ProsLots of opportunity for working on a wide variety of projects.
Work on leading-edge business jet technology.
Most engineers are highly motivated and competent.
    Good compensation and benefits.

ConsOverloaded with projects with unrealistic deadlines. Manifested in high stress levels, health problems, broken marriages.
    Overly schedule- and cost-driven.
    Competitive, rather than service-oriented, atmosphere.
    Rigid working hours.

Advice to Senior ManagementReduce turnover by serving and respecting employees as people, rather than as means to an end. Focus on quality and set realistic program schedules.
