I have been working at HGST as a contractor (Less than a year)

    Pros

Working 12 hours per day for 3 or 4 days a week. In a month, you work only 15 days. You have half of the months free for whatever you want to do!

    Cons

It is not easy to get permanent employment. They keep hiring people as contract probably due to the reason that they dont want to pay benefits to their employees!

    Advice to Management

Trained and certified your employee and hire them full time as soon as possible. Stop hiring contractor!

I have been working at HGST full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Genuine and mostly succesfull effort to modernise their infrastructure and internal processes. Mature and competent egineering talent. Excellent benefits. Working hard on diversifying their market beyond hard drives. Good working environment.

    Cons

Part of a public company so there is friction on getting projects approved and out the door. Fairly narrow product scope so you're mostly refining features for each new generation. Conservative client base so limited room for radical innovation. Facing a market transition from HD to SSD and trying to enter new markets so there's some uncertainty about business direction. Merger with WD will happen in the indefiinte future.

    Advice to Management

Engineering talent compensation needs a review, it's falling behind. Simplyfy the product lines, particularly in the consumer space.

    I worked at HGST full-time

    Pros

HGST still has some of its good bones inherited from IBM. For those who don't know, HGST goes back to the days when IBM sold its hard drive division and some other assets to Hitachi. Good management teams. Good benefits and competitive pay.

    Cons

While HGST is now a part of Western Digital, there have been operational constraints imposed on HGST due to regulatory action from China. This has been complicating things with regard to the future direction and structure of HGST.

    Advice to Management

Keep up a high quality management style and keep your eyes (and investments) on innovative technology.
