    Pros

    Great member community and work environment. Can enjoy time at work and feel productive. Easy to bounce to new positions without having to move out of the area as HNI, HON, and Allsteel are all in Muscatine.

    Cons

    Operating systems are outdated and the upraded version is slow to come. Muscatine is a small town in Iowa right on the Mississippi so there is not an over abundance of things to do

    Advice to Management

    Look for expansion in the foreign markets to drive domestic production. Continue hiring of recent college grads to grow and sustain the business.

    Pros

    Benefits are ok. Shift is ok.

    Cons

    Pay is low, management poor, co-workers are cry babies, HR is a joke. Building is hot and dirty.

    Advice to Management

    Expand pay range to hourlys. Wide range between hourly pay and group lead pay

    Pros

    HNI is member-owned, so the benefits are pretty good and the profit-sharing system is cool (ultimately though, my once-a-year profit share just pays for a grocery run). The company is extremely solid and has paid dividends to its shareholders every year since the 1950's. It weathered the 2008 crash well and will continue to be profitable for the foreseeable future.

    Cons

    HNI is a holding company for about a dozen subsidiaries ("operating companies"). This gives HNI strong leveraging power, but disastrous focus. The company seems pulled in a million different directions, and on top of that, it's an ultra-conservative company that is highly, highly risk-averse. So it's afraid to go in any one of the million directions it's pulled in, and the result is stagnation. The company frequently finds itself playing "catch up" with competitors, and experiences a high turnover rate as employees grow frustrated and leave. Also, the company doesn't compensate very well. While the CEO enjoys $4-5M/year salary, many of the company's employees struggle to make ends meet. On top of that, they are expected to prioritize work, always, and a healthy work-life balance is pretty much nonexistent at this organization. HNI is headquartered in rural Iowa, so perhaps this makes sense, but a dramatic shift will be needed before the company can expect to attract the incoming workforce (i.e. millennials).

    Advice to Management

    HNI needs to formally split its office furniture and hearth products branches into two separate companies, with Stan Askren (CEO) taking the lead over the hearth products company and someone else - someone newer, fresher, and more in-tune with the times - heading up the office furniture company. This individual should focus on consolidating, if not the opcos themselves, overall brand direction and purpose. In addition, this individual should eliminate "old boy" compensation structures and strive to attract and retain top talent by instituting a more progressive culture and business approach.

    Pros

    I've always enjoyed working here but it seems like the safety and overall culture is improving year over year. There is a feeling that the people are most important now, rather than the product. We now get 8 days notice for Saturday work and management seems interested in our feedback.

    Cons

    Planning and forecast management needs some work. I see leadership trying to explain why we are working 9 hr days and saturdays after just having a cut friday, and you can tell that they are frustrated too

    Pros

    Strong company drive, performance driven. Good RCI process that focuses on change. Good financial performance. Strong supply chain tactics which blend manufacturing practices to the transportation of products to customers. Strong customer focus.

    Cons

    Outdated management practices focused on tactical thinking. Very little strategic focus from leadership, even during strategic meetings. No significant change management approach other than RCI. Senior leaders have been in the company to long that they are blinded to best practices at other companies more advanced. Leaders are also resistant to new approaches.

    Advice to Management

    1.) Listen to the new people that are coming into the company. 2.) Train, support and encourage the current managers and directors to open up to new approaches. 3.) Build a culture of innovation around product development. Think outside of files and office furniture

    Pros

    HNI has an awesome culture. Members are encouraged to provide honest feedback and make a real impact. The sky's the limit as far as career growth goes - HNI is very willing to take reasonable career advancement risks on members who prove they can think like owners and add value. There are many career opportunities due to the number of operating companies that roll up under HNI. The comp is competitive and the benefit package (especially healthcare and retirement benefits) are very generous.

    Cons

    Sometimes, because HNI is so decentralized (many operating companies), it can be challenging to get traction on new initiatives. A healthy appetite for change is there throughout the corporation, it just can be difficult to get quick consensus on the approach to organizing and deploying change throughout the decentralized organization.

    Advice to Management

    Keep the emphasis on good culture and business growth going!

    Pros

    Decent pay, profit sharing when company is making money. HNI is good for the local community and the community in China working for Lamex. Small town living the commute is non stressful and the overall city life is safe and affordable.

    Cons

    Too many contractors, top heavy with Directors, Managers, and Supervisors. Its the buddy system who you know and are friends with determines if you move up and you could spend years doing the same thing with nowhere to move forward or even move laterally. Benefits are below average for a mid to large corporation. HR-MCR is non existent for it's employees as they are just trying to move up the ladder to higher management, definitely their own agenda. Very LARGE turnover in the last 3 years. CIO is only interested in the contracting to save money, and the Oracle transition and not with day to day operations and the employees who keep IT and the business running. I would not recommend working in IT at HNI

    Advice to Management

    Invest more in day to day operations and not your own agenda, basically seen as a dog & pony show by the people who really keep the operation running.

    Pros

    All the overtime you can handle.

    Cons

    You need to work your life away to be able to make ends meet. The pay is terrible relative to the work they expect from you. The CEO makes over 5 million a year, while the "members" can't afford to feed their families a decent meal. Hours are inconsistent, you have no idea what time your shift will end from day to day.

    Advice to Management

    Pay a decent wage for a decent days work.

    Growth opportunities, centralized manufacturing facilities in Iowa

    Cons

    Managers and partners are out for #1. No respect for fellow members and their abilities. People are always out to make others look bad.

    Advice to Management

    show some consideration to your members. Don't be a "power-over" leader. Morale is low for a reason.
