Chicago Office Review

Anonymous Employee (Former Employee)

I worked at HNTB Companies

ProsCompensation package is not bad.

ConsManagement do not seem to care about the development of their employees. Favoritism is pretty apparent. Managers are not good people managers.

Advice to Senior ManagementPeople that are in the position of managing people should want to do it. Otherwise, they should just manage projects.

Your home life ends with an employment offer from HNTB.

Anonymous Employee (Former Employee)
Chicago, IL

I worked at HNTB Companies full-time for more than a year

ProsMeets industry compensation. Great office location - close to Trains.

ConsIn my experience, the middle and upper management at HNTB are poor at managing people. The management I worked under didn’t have realistic delivery schedules or expertise; they would continually lie to clients to say that project x was 80% done, when it was really only 30%. That resulted in very stressful milestone deliveries. Managers are slave drivers who don’t want to get their hands dirty.

Advice to Senior ManagementWork on culture and put some effort into your peoples' happiness.

They don't care about their consultants, Revolving door management, everyone is clueless

Office Technician (Former Employee)
Oakland, CA

I worked at HNTB Companies full-time for more than a year

ProsBenefits are ok, pay rate is decent

ConsNo annual review despite mentions of it. Constant revolving door of management changes. No support if you are a victim of abuse at the client site (which I was)

Advice to Senior ManagementHire some competent people and treat them with respect. Support your consultants and don't just throw them under the bus to keep a valuable contract. There were so many conflicts of interest at the client site in the project I was assigned to that it's disgusting. I believe I was let go because individuals were afraid I would be a whistleblower. STEER CLEAR of this messed up company! They will not support you or help you and they will leave your high and dry at the worst possible time.

ProsSmart, creative, dedicated people. Cultural focus on integrity. Has the opportunity to break in to some great market opportunities if management can learn to work together.

ConsSignificant executive turmoil, short sighted decision making and no investment in IT technologies/applications.

Mostly good but almost non-existant upper management, little if any communications to employees

Anonymous Employee (Former Employee)

I worked at HNTB Companies

ProsGood salary, decent working conditions, good middle management - trying anyway.

ConsPoor communications company wide. Wide spread paranoia and "management by fear"

DON'T DO IT

Anonymous Employee (Former Employee)

I worked at HNTB Companies

ProsDifferent types of Project If you can Extract truth

ConsHostile Working Environment
I worked for them and it was terrible. The manager was a back bitter and then I learned that I was among 5 more. From the time I was hired I got a lot of attitude and misinformation from my co-workers or should I say arch enemies. One guy actually told me that he was opposed to having an outsider hired into the group about 1 month after I had been hired. My boss turmed my training over to people who did not want me or any other person (she did not manage the my training at all) "from the outside" hired on. Its hard to produce good work when sabotage is a foot. I was getting false information, incomplete information to none at all (they were just too busy to help me). What's worse is that HR did nothing about it and I was unjustly let go for a job that I had extensive experience in. It was unjust to let me go but it feels GOOD to be gone. If I could give them NO stars I WOULD.

Advice to Senior ManagementI think I said it.

This place is the Hindenburg, they just don't know it yet.

Anonymous Employee (Former Employee)
Kansas City, MO

I worked at HNTB Companies full-time for more than 5 years

ProsGreat place to gain experience, if you're already very experienced they will bring you in as an AVP or above, those people have amazing incentives.

ConsNo career path, people will not correct issues, ineffective management, not willing to pay for experience.

Managers just keeps their heads down so they can collect a paycheck and not be bothered. Trying to change the status quo here is the kiss of death.

Ever seen Mad Men? Yeah.....

Advice to Senior ManagementQuit reorganizing the company every 8-12 months (this happened for 4 years in a row). Fire people that are ineffective, I think the only place where it is harder to be let go would be a government position.

They sell you the Brooklyn Bridge and rip you off at the same time.

Anonymous Employee (Former Employee)
Dallas, TX

I worked at HNTB Companies

ProsHNTB used to be a great company to work for. Their vision and 4 for 4 is brilliant and motivating. Some of the projects are engaging and enjoyable.

ConsUpper management are money hogs. They hog the billable hours and make the frontline employees scrounge for hours to justify their timecards. HNTB really rips you off in the end. Within your first year, you get all the praise and glory but then you get pushed aside later in your career. Senior management are not honest with their employees which results in low morale. Many of these employees are very unhappy because their arms are tied behind their backs. No matter how hard you work, they give you a very small raise. They milk you for every information to make themselves look better then lay you off. The worst part, HNTB promotes you to your desired position then they take it away giving the excuse that they had to do this because of 'economics'.

Advice to Senior ManagementMany upper management are making six figure incomes and wonder why they have to lay off many people. I suggest you take a cut in your pay to share the wealth to others. Don't favor certain employees- treat everyone equal.

Constantly beating a brick wall

Software Quality Assurance (Current Employee)
Kansas City, MO

I have been working at HNTB Companies

ProsPay is decent
Allowed to expense alcohol when traveling.
Get your own laptop to bring to home.
Get to do just about anything you want.
Good at water resources

ConsWild and careless project managers in the federal technology department.
Lack of trust in upper management.
Every project is always a chaotic mess with constant budget issues. Much better project management is needed.

Advice to Senior ManagementThe Technology department in HNTB Federal is lacking project management. BASE4D was a great opportunity that was ruined by wild and crazy management. Good employees are being let go because of the lack of work resulting from wild and crazy management.
