Current Employee - Merchandising Assistant in Saint Petersburg, FL

I have been working at HSN full-time (more than a year)

    Pros

Home shopping network is a not a typical retailer and drives business through 24hr TV programming, offering customers a wide variety of products and information. Therefore as an employee I am able to experience a different view of retailing, be involved with designers, brand launches, collaborations, work with many in-house departments, and enjoy many benefits. It is a great place to get your merchandising career started.

    Cons

Work demands do not meet compensation.

I have been working at HSN full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Very generous time off policies (after initial 90 days) great leadership, lots of room for advancement within the company! Trainers, Supervisors, Managers right on up the ladder work to help you be the best that you can be, and will partner with you to help you reach your goals (even if those goals are to advance to a different department.) I have worked in call centers off and on for over 20 years, and with the exception of pay, this is hands down the best call center I have ever worked in! Management truly has an open door policy, one of my co workers emailed and idea off to the CEO and was actually scheduled an appointment to discuss her ideas... Amazing! Benefits are fairly competitive, able to meet celebrities, sample products, great discounts.. They have the best shift bid process I have ever seen in any call center, and they work to ensure that you at least get a rotating weekend off.. I have read some of the other reviews, and I am not sure where these people really worked, but you have to work really hard to get fired from HSN..

    Cons

Pay could be better, training could be longer, no continuing education.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

The recession is over and competitive jobs are coming back, maybe you need to re-evaluate the pay scale? Supervisors should work the same schedules as their team. A longer training period and continuing education would do wonders for your employee retention, as would having an assigned seat, your own seat, everyday.

    Pros

Progressive, Upbeat, Swanky place to work!

    Cons

Can be a bit shallow and clicky at times

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Get to know and understand employees capabilities through peer review, not just direct report.

I have been working at HSN part-time (less than a year)

    Pros

    A lot of nice people
    Tons of discounts
    HSN discount is great
    Gated campus
    Nice cafeteria
    Lots of parking
    Cool environment

    Cons

    Slow-paced HR
Some people who lie, like everywhere else
24/7 work place, but cafeteria closes around 2 pm.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

I firmly believe everyone in management should, at the very least, know how to perform the job of those they supervise.

I have been working at HSN full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

The corporate office is big - it employes thousands, so the pros and cons will differ by area. Overall, HSN is a very good place to work. Bright people that care about what they do. The campus is beautiful and the benefits are very good. The pay is competitive with similar roles in the Tampa Bay Area. Movement within the company to try different career paths is encouraged. Hard work and a team-oriented approach can earn you a long career at HSN.

    Cons

The closer you are to the 24/7 aspects of the business (24 x 7 live programming), the more unpredictable your schedule can be. As with any big company, politics can get involved with promotions. The company has been known at times to hire external candidates over seemingly qualified internal candidates.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Continue working on helping the left hand know what the right hand is doing - don't have the wheel reinvented in silos across campus.

I worked at HSN full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

HSN won't terminate you for little to no reason. Management really works at fulfilling employee suggestions by continuously improving procedures and applications. Work-at-home positions offered in certain states. HSN keeps up with technology like Facebook, Twitter, mobile apps, etc. Annual employee sale with great prices. Great employee discounts at HSN outlets in FL. Annual employee meeting/luncheon which included games, prizes, giveaways and free samples.

    Cons

HSN gives small raises. Training could be longer to avoid many mistakes which other employees may have to try and correct. I worked in Customer Svc and most CS reps didn't notate customer accounts, this should be required to assist customers more efficiently. No advancement opportunities besides Customer Svc and Supervisor positions. I switched to CS because Sales became too repetitive, CS was more challenging but I was ready for a change by then. CS reps don't have as much time off the phones as Sales due to higher call volume. This prevented me from taking most of the online learning courses. It was very difficult finding information on the intranet when assisting customers due to the vast amount of information.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Offer more opportunities to advance, and training for those positions.

I have been working at HSN full-time (more than a year)

    Pros

Incredibly flexible especially if you're able to work from home. You can sign up for OT when it's available and cancel almost right up until the hour last minute if plans change. Coworkers are friendly.

    Cons

You work every holidays and every weekend.
Your monthly reviews are always based off one or two phone calls out of hundreds, so you always have to be on your game.
You deal with perverts who call in for cheap trills.
You have to be constantly apologizing; "the customer is always right" is VERY big.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

More product education during the actual training portion. At least on the brands.
