I have been working at Hallmark

    Pros

The people who work at Hallmark are fantastic. The customers are great, love sharing stories with them.

    Cons

The upper level management could do better to encourage employees to develop and grow into better sales people instead of demanding a certain number of sales from them per day.

    Pros

    * They truly are a wonderful company to work for. For the most part, the people are very warm and friendly.

    * They have always done a good job of taking care of their employees.

    * Texas Sheet Cake Thursday (those who have experienced it know what I am talking about).

    * Good benefits, but they seem to get worse and worse every year.

    * I love that you can have a work schedule that suits your life to balance it all (if I want to come in at 6 and leave early, I can, or at 9 and stay late, I can).

    Cons

    * In many ways, it is a dying business.

    * If you are a millennial, you are esteemed very highly, as they want to kiss your hind end as much as possible, because you are who they are wanting to win over in the marketplace. The con is for all of those who are not a millennial, especially if you are not LGBT or a minority.

    * Upper management has no idea what to do to save the company. They consistently have several layoffs each year and fall short of all financial plans under their guidance. It is one mistake after another, and everyone under them pays the price for their decisions, yet they stay with job security and get their yearly bonuses.

    * If you visit any other studio, Hallmark seems 20 years outdated.

    * They are about 3 versions behind on software compared to the outside world, and are way out of date.

    Advice to Management

There are too many things to say, both thanking them and for obvious mistakes. It is easy to talk about the negatives, but there are many, many positives as well, and overall, I am thankful to be here for the time I have been.

I have been working at Hallmark

    Pros

The job is somewhat flexible, I work in some great stores.

    Cons

Merger of National and Walmart has made changes to our accounts. Instead of making it less travel, it has become more.

    Advice to Management

Get input from your employees who know the territory and the stores.

    Pros

It teaches you what it means to provide great customer service and keep people happy.

    Cons

Not many hours, it is mostly a seasonal store. Thrown right into an experience, not always trained.

    Advice to Management

Work around a schedule that will help other employees get the hours they need to support themselves.

    Pros

Freedom to have a nice work/ family balance. Wonderful creative environment for personal growth and collaborative work practices. Work among incredible artist who are willing to share and teach you.

    Cons

Company struggles with changing consumer needs and poor management. Creativity is being overcome by cheap cost of doing business overseas.

    Advice to Management

Don't rely on up and coming newbies from the outside to save the business. Don't throw away the experience talent you have nurtured already. Don't let the designers pay for poor middle mismanagement.

    Pros

Benefits, life balance, great people, world class creative organization, on site cafeteria, medical, and gym, great creative resources, guest lecturer series, top creative talent, opportunities for growth and advancement.

All in all, Hallmark is still a good company to work for. They have many challenges ahead of them. If you get the opportunity to work there, do it! It's still a great company for experience and for your resume. Who knows, you may have a solution to make a difference.

    Cons

Company is struggling to stay relevant, top heavy in management, very little up flow of ideas from people actually doing the work, leadership needs to look beyond the cardshop for the company's survival, performance feedback needs to be anonymous, internal politics, under utilization of some great creative talent.

    Advice to Management

Be open to new ideas regardless of where they come from, reduce redundancies in management, more effective vetting of managers, empowerment is an underutilized tool, retain "keystone" positions/people with expertise in areas of value, build a vision that isn't afraid to look beyond the cardshop model. Accept the realities of the market and change. Don't shoot great ideas down because they don't align with a dated business model, change the business model.
