I have been working at Hamilton Sundstrand

    Pros

If you need a job they probably will hire you since turnover is such that people are always leaving. Some good people, just not at the project manager level.

    Cons

Management does perform the duties of management other than hiring and firing; no training, leading, communication; or competent planning; In general dysfunctional leadership. Those I knew had no people skills. The company does not provide adequate resources (software tools), assigns tasks generally when they are already behind schedule. They points finger at subordinates and fire them when they dare disagree or things don't work out due to their own incompetence.. They furlough employees without pay to save money then Heaven help them if they don't work for free anyway to meet absurd deadlines they set.
Most of the experienced people of my project left for good reasons; lack of appreciation, this means few experts at hand to provide direction. they are generally under staffed, under trained and in a crisis mode..

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Take a close look at lower level management. Some are incredibly incompetent, rude, petty tyrants that block progress (micromanage) rather than support and either do not know what is required or do not communicate what they know, if anything. Provide some training for crying out loud, make sure employees have adequate software licences for tools and make an effort to hang on to those who have endured long enough to provide expertise.

    Pros

Made a good hourly wage, co-workers were great.
    Best manufacturing facility in IL.

    Cons

Management lied to employees, experianced being lock out as a union employee.
Sundstrand was great until purchased by United Tech, they they rode us hard and put it to us dry!

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Just be honest and real, as you now know Americans are in this together.

I have been working at Hamilton Sundstrand

    Pros

The best thing about Hamilton Sundstrand is the people who work so hard to do the right thing.

    Cons

There is great pressure and politics and people keep on trying to do what is right despite the companies blind attitude towards employees. It is a demoralizing and predatory environment where everyone is on edge. It used to be a great place to work but not now.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

I have no advice to management because I know they will not listen and that is a sad way to run a business.

    Pros

There are some nice people that work at HS.

    Cons

A very political place . Mentally Abusive working enviroment . Beware. Good ole boy network alive and well. Hamilton hires people to help with production problems and then lays them off when the problem is resolved. Incompetance , Cronyism and Nepotisim are daily life at hs. Little or no training is provided. If training is provided it's at a pace no normal person could handle .

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Get rid of your senior mangement that has been in the company for over 25 years. They provide little value added and are holding Hamilton from being a true world class company

    I worked at Hamilton Sundstrand

    Pros

Good educational subsidies. Good exposure to aerospace and defense programs. Plenty of money to experiment with new ideas and concepts.

    Cons

Upper management is top heavy with incompetence. People move through the ranks because of the support from someone above them who is their sponsor not because they're qualified for the job. Very political climate, those wanting to rise to the top do so at the expense of those under them by occupying positions they are not qualified to hold.
Problems are solved by appointing layers of program managers to collect data, hold meetings, write reports, make presentations and other "glitter". Small groups of competent technical individuals with the skills to solve problems are ignored in favor of the politically correct crowd.
Powerful labor union in manufacturing hampers production, wastes money, sours attitudes.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

The leadership should be weeded out and replaced with competent individuals with technical skills that have worked their way through the organization through hard work and job knowledge. Hiring practices should be changed to allow those without a college degree employment based on their past work experiences.

I have been working at Hamilton Sundstrand

    Pros

Medicial, dental and education benefits are very good. The non management employees are hard working.

    Cons

Management at all levels from mid to top is incompetent and have a sense of power entitlement. Union workers have been treated poorly and many have a sense of money through overtime and years of service entitlement .
Its a case of two wrongs don't make a right.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

You can't apply leadership decisions based on what worked in the automotive industry or a sister division like Pratt because that are not the same. You can't outsource to manufacture your products, do your engineering and treat your US based employees poorly and taking away furlough days to make a profit without repercussions.
