I worked at Hamilton Sundstrand full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Highly interesting technologies make this an place exciting place to work. Co-workers are a cut above the norm.

    Cons

Working on government projects tends to obfuscate profit motivation and replace it with politics. This flows throughout the teams working on the projects. Government projects are subject to the whim of the Congress and the President. Funding is never certain.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Don't EVER refer to the company as 'Hamilton' by itself when talking to the Rockford employees! Use 'UTC' or something else.

I worked at Hamilton Sundstrand full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Hamilton Sundstrand was a good place to work with a lot of total care benefits above and beyond salary alone. Managers sometimes set unrealistic goals, but were fair when circumstances warranted. Managers also seemed to recognize talent and worked hard to promote from within, developing employees.

    Cons

Interdepartmental communication lacking, underfunded or tight budgets did not always allow departments who work together in an efficient or helpful manner. IT needs improvement to support growing demands. Top down visibility for long term projects could use improvement.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Long term strategic planning

I worked at Hamilton Sundstrand full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

I enjoyed working at HSPS because it offered competitive salaries, but there were also several opportunities for career growth within the company.

    Cons

Sometimes cell management got away with unethical practices toward the hourly employees and Human Resources was less than sympathetic, which made for an uncomfortable atmosphere at times.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Listen better and take responsible action when lower management crosses ethical boundaries with hourly employees, e.g. harrassment, intimidation and retaliation.

    Pros

There are some really smart and talented individuals who are committed to Hamilton and their work. There is a lot of support for continued education both with degree programs and certifications.

    Cons

The number of meetings and documentation required can make it difficult to focus on the actual work you should be doing instead of the bureaucracy.

    Cons

Electrical engineers get more regard it seems. The location was in rockford which is an unplesant town(parts of it).

I worked at Hamilton Sundstrand as an intern (less than an year)

    Pros

Great pay, and they keep you busy! They have a intern/co-op program which makes it easier to meet people there and most of the engineers are previous co-ops.

    Cons

Some of the work you do gets tedious, you sometimes get the projects that no one else really wants to do. They didn't really seem prepared for an intern, everything seemed very last minute and I waited awhile to get into a real project. Location wasn't that great either, Rockford isn't the greatest place to live.

I have been working at Hamilton Sundstrand full-time (more than 8 years)

    Pros

A broad multifunctional organization with lots of opportunity to change jobs and keep learning without moving cities. Generally positive culture with many smart, fun people who care passionately about their work.

    Cons

The organization is highly stressed to "meet the numbers" and manage new programs. The structure can be very top down and place unrealistic demands on processes or individuals.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Trust us more. We care as much as you do and are working really hard. Believe it or not, we actually know what we're doing most of the time. And, please, take a vacation. It will do us all good to have you a little more relaxed, more creative, and less reactive.
