I have been working at Harland Clarke

    Pros

Well recognized company in the market

    Cons

Always trying to keep people from ear I g too much money. Capped earnings and inwardly focused control freak "leadership" stopped investing in people years ago. Unlike John H Harland Co., Harland Clarke has tunnel vision when it comes to a broad view of what it takes to be a great company.

    Pros

Benefits are good. I met some great people.

    Cons

incompetency in management, awful hours, too much almost forced overtime, they hire a lot of incompetent people.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Pay employees who do a good job, more money or give them bonuses. It's sad when you work extremely hard, and regularly exceed production goals, but you make just as much money as the person who doesn't do anything their whole shift, and rarely meets their production goals.

I worked at Harland Clarke full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

The benefits at HC are one of their greatest assets. Peers work well together. Lower level management seems to care for their workers.

    Cons

There is NO downward communication. As much as they say they are communicating, it is almost non-existent. The one person I had the most respect for, at the "C"/VP level was Dan Singleton. He seemed like a straight shooter, many of the others spent more time not answering the questions of their employees as opposed to building up morale. HC is so top oriented, the people in trenches are often left no knowing what is going on. Sometimes you can send an email and it is a week or more, or never before you get a response back. All of the focus is on keeping business as opposed to the employees. No, or very little, internal recognition or upward movement available. I saw many times, over the years I worked with Harland/Harland Clarke, many qualified internal candidates for jobs were not rewarded for their hard work as outside persons were hired.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Focus on the employees needs and pay attention to their needs. Spend time preparing current employees to move up in the company as opposed to overlooking them.

    Pros

Company tries to find creative ways to encourage you to work more. Great benefits.

    Cons

Micro managed. Seniority always trumped weather or not you actually qualified for the position.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Consider being more flexible with hours.

I have been working at Harland Clarke full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Decent benefits. Good health insurance.... You immediately receive vacation time. Climate controlled environment.

    Cons

Poor pay raises. I've been employed there for almost 4 years and the total amount of raises that I have received equals to $1.26....that is an average of .30 a year.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Produce a more fair pay scale. Offer employee's some type of bonuses for working so hard.

    Pros

    M-F. 6:30 am - 7:00 pm

    Cons

    Unethical practices
Break labor laws for wages, time off, accruing time, leave, vacation.
Management in Colorado operates on size able double standards

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Make management accountable for their time off. Extended lunches. Second jobs (Aerobics instructors?!?)
Agents need a reason to trust management again.
Too many lies. No follow through. No accountability? Supervisors aren't able to lead when in meetings all the time. No transparancy

I have been working at Harland Clarke full-time (less than an year)

    Pros

Great Benefits, given a lot of vacation time, very easy job. Also very hard to get fired unless you never show up to work (you also can get written up quite a few times before it being a real problem). If you come in, do your job, hit your numbers, don't have an opinion, and you will be fine. If you are single and dont have kids its not a bad job.

    Cons

pay is not worth all you have to put up with, a majority of the people are not very smart (including management) can be very frustrating to work with. very low pay.. Work overtime A lot! They are swapping to 12 hour shifts and working every other weekend (including Sundays), this means if you are day shift you work 6:30am-6:45pm and if you are night shift you will work 6:30pm-6:45am... makes for very long days for very little pay. If you make a mistake you get written up very quickly. very very easy to get hurt on this job!! It is very hard to balance your work and life, specially if you are on night shift. I asked my supervisor one week if we will be working over the weekend or not, because I wanted to make plans with my family if we weren't I was told "dont know yet, you have no life out side these doors, this is your life".... not the greatest way to boost moral!

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Care more about your employees. Stop letting the very old employees run the plant! They make the younger employees who can hit their numbers very angry, and are extremely rude to them...you will soon have people over 60 working there who are too old to move and will never hit your numbers! When a situation arises call in both employees to discuss the issue, don't just assume and place blame without taking to both parties.

    Pros

Great fellow workers. Very intelligent and hard working. Bonus plan was never very good but has been eliminated. Health plan was okay. 401k plan was okay.

    Cons

Management of this company is pretty bad in a rapidly declining industry. There is no innovation, just reaction. Way too many excellent employees have been laid off or fear to be soon. This was a nice company to work for when it was just Clarke American. Since merger with Harland, it has rapidly gone downhill.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Don't be in such a mad rush to eliminate employees, especially those who are good at what they do, dedicated and hard working. The company is becoming a sweat shop.
