I have been working at Harmonic full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

Technology Leaders, Track-record of Limited Success, willing to supersede their success to get to the next level. Sound senior executive leadership. Good company values.

    Cons

Needs better focus. Diverse portfolio puts resource demand high and move competition for resources slightly beyond the right balance.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Develop the right senior relationships at your suppliers to get beyond mid-level managment to being a stratgic partner that turns $10 million into $100 million and $50 million into $200 million.

I worked at Harmonic full-time (less than a year)

    Pros

Relaxed atmosphere. People were very friendly and the cafeteria was awesome and inexpensive. Policies for full timers seemed to be great however I was a contractor and wasn't under the same plan. Compensation was great as a contractor and I believe full timers were paid well also. Was a good experience while it lasted.

    Cons

Would have been nice to have more communication with my boss. I can only assume I did a good job however the project ended early but I got everything and more done I was suppose to.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Be honest with contractors and communicate. Don't dangle a carrot of FT employment if you're only going to keep them for a short term project.

I worked at Harmonic full-time (more than a year)

    Pros

company has weathered the ups and downs for a long time. People want to change and grow the business. Have brought on some great senior leaders from other companies in recent years.

    Cons

internal systems outdated, budgets restricted by sr mgmnt trying to keep stock price up. Most new sr. mgmnt is from Cisco, so turning into a Cisco style company with lots of process. lots of silos and no communication in different R&D sites.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

go private or be acquired by another big player. spend some money on IT.

I have been working at Harmonic full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

Culture is good, collaborative, highly technical, while being reasonable and laid back as well.

    Cons

Mid-size company, too small and too big at the same time.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Start looking at acquisitions with more ROI, and promote for leadership from within. Many people at Harmonic have been stuck in jobs for too many years. People can be shifted around and promoted to build skill sets and improve morale/alleviate boredom.

I worked at Harmonic as a contractor (less than a year)

    Pros

Products are audio/video encoding and decoding boxes used in professional broadcast environment. Development facilities for engineers are better than average including a excellent audio/visual lab. Had weekly project status review with hardware engineering group in Israel and firmware group in San Jose.

    Cons

Project management seemed a unorganized and there was no system engineering group at San Jose office. Product documentation about average, lots of reverse engineering time required to upgrade existing product line to new features. No written interface specifications at either the physical layer or HDLC layer.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Need to add System Engineering group to development detailed systems engineering specifications, system integration, and system testing for both hardware, software, and firmware.

Focus on core business - stick to a direction and deliver. Dont get side tracked by short term objectives that defocus from the bigger picture.

Current Employee - Senior QA Automation Engineer in Beaverton, OR
Current Employee - Senior QA Automation Engineer in Beaverton, OR

I have been working at Harmonic

    Pros

    * Good work/life balance, 40 hours a week really is the baseline
    * Great people, I genuinely like my coworkers and boss.
    * Management very open to new technology ideas. Technology used is very old, updating it is very useful and provides and lots of job satisfaction.

    Cons

    * Technology is old (RCP, FTP, etc)
    * Waterfall development methodology (no agile)
    * Strong competition in the marketplace has lead to tight purse-strings at the moment, though I expect that to abate.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Shift focus when hiring from video experience to newer industry knowledge, there's a lot of good tech out there we're simply not using.
