    Experience

    Student Worker (Former Employee)

ProsGained experience from working professionals in a very elite environment

ConsDue to the academia of it all, the wages were pretty low... considering the HUGE endowment and all.

    Fantastic!

    Postdoctoral Fellow (Former Employee)
    Cambridge, MA

ProsYou meet the most intellectual groups of people in the world. You may work on serious projects with industry.

ConsToo many snobs. Takes too much time to publish papers, usually starting publishing only after first year for most disciplines.

Great place to work, but lots of bureaucracy

    Research Associate (Current Employee)
    Cambridge, MA

ProsThere are lots of reasons to love working at Harvard: wonderful hours (9-5PM on the staff side), intellectually stimulating work, brilliant people, lots of resources, Thanksgiving/Christmas vacations free, pay is good.

ConsThere can be a lot of bureaucracy depending on which department you work in. There is very little opportunity for more than a standard 2% raise or a bonus unless you are near the top of the department, so you should definitely negotiate high when you come in. While I think there may be opportunities to bounce around to different jobs at the school, I have personally seen few people advance from within in my department.

Advice to Senior Management1.) Create a promotion friendly environment within departments
2.) Reward hard work with raises or bonuses

    Great place, limited growth internally.

    Research Computing Specialist (Current Employee)
    Cambridge, MA

ProsGreat place to work, amazing relaxed culture, great area, and working in Higher Ed/Research I find personally very rewarding. Great benefits too!

ConsAs a non-academic, I've found I've already (31 years old, 7 years @ Harvard) hit the "only has a BS" wall. I've been personally told that while I'm qualified for advancement and deserve it, at the upper levels its just not possible with ONLY a bachelors and 10 years of experience. My boss and I talked about raises/advancement over a year ago, and even with monthly prodding, Its got me no where. Best/only way to get promoted (others have backed this up), is to leave or change schools within the university.

Harvard is VERY decentralized, and disorganized, but magically functions as well as it does. Its an...amazing place.

Advice to Senior ManagementMore structure, defined growth for employees, and you've got to pay better, at least within the IT world, if you want to stop the non-stop decades long turn over than has nearly crippled IT at Harvard Multiple times. Regardless of how nice it is to be at Harvard, turning down offers for 10-30K more gets pretty hard, and its why everyone in Harvard IT community leaves if they are any good. I have purchased multiple employees worth of equipment with little need for justification, but getting a raise or more staff if nearly impossible for less total $$.

Good place to cultivate extra-curricular interests

    Director (Former Employee)
    Cambridge, MA

ProsExcellent benefits, wonderful training and learning opportunity. Great community of people. Lots of opportunity to learn and engage in work that is outside what would count strictly in job requirements.

ConsFairly limited career opportunity for non-academics. Salary is less than industry, but only very slightly. Staff management is not really well matched to faculty in sheer intellectual capacity. This can cause some drift staff manager strategies vs. University strategy.

Advice to Senior ManagementNot much advice, they've clearly got a good thing. They have exception people working for them for less than industry pay.

Summer job; fine but nice place to work

    Intern (Former Employee)
    Cambridge, MA

ProsIt's a really, really nice place to work with a lot of very interesting place.

ConsPersonal experience -- I was just doing a summer job, so not all the work was particularly glorious. To be expected, however.
