I worked at Hastings Entertainment full-time (more than an year)

    Pros

    Great coworkers, good discount.

I was middle management and everyone at my level and below were great people.

    Cons

Terrible management turnover, low pay, no backup from management when issues arise.

I worked there for 1 year exactly and there were 6 different store managers. Upper management would look for reasons to get rid of managers they didn't like personally, despite them improving the sotre.

    Pros

    Great people and great customers

    Cons

Work-life balance, minimum pay for hardworking associates, work load too heavy for little staff

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Listen, actually LISTEN, when your managers are talking. Whether it is a Store manager or a department manager. We are the ones that work in the store day to day. Ensure your expectations are realistic and give people the opportunity to advance.

    Pros

I was the Book Manager. I LOVED my job. Loved the product and most of the customers.

    Cons

    Low pay.
    Minimal coverage on the floor.
    Task management is ridiculous.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Appreciate your employees more. Be more realistic about your expectations.

Easy work, but poor management climate and very archaic and unreliable technical system.

I have been working at Hastings Entertainment full-time (less than an year)

    Pros

Great discount on used products. Get to sell fun entertainment products. Get to work with fun people if you have the right co-workers. Good work flexibility with reasonable hours and shifts even for full-time mangers.

    Cons

Low pay even for management; not any better than Walmart or any other major retail chain with a low salary for MIT and no overtime for 48+ hours a week of required work. Awful store training program full of out-dated policy information and unreliable an inaccurate tests. Management has no desire to properly train new management personal, instead they just fire people without warning. Unreliable computer system that freezes and crashes making inventory a pain. Depending where you work you may have to deal with a lo of theft issues.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Actually follow the handbook and try to train new people rather than treat people like expendable garbage. It is unethical to fire MIT's based on performance reviews without having previously spoken with them and defining your expectations for them. They can't fix problems you have that you never brought to their attention.

    Pros

The best co workers you will ever have! It is a bunch of really smart people with outside degrees that love their various mediums. If money doesn't matter there is no better job.

    Cons

If you want to pay your water bill this month, you cannot afford to work here

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Continue in the direction you are going! It is a much needed change from the past! Open the purse strings with the new owner and invest in the future!

I worked at Hastings Entertainment part-time (less than an year)

    Pros

Great people to work with. Learned a lot about retail. Standing all day long was kind of a bummer, but they didn't mind what footwear you had so that made it bearable.

    Cons

Managers are too worried about the numbers that they treat the workers like cogs in a machine. I went many months without a good grasp on what i was doing.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Look into the stores more. Don't let the appearance of a tight ship fool you.

I have been working at Hastings Entertainment part-time (more than an year)

    Pros

Great discounts (mainly on books), flexible scheduling, great employee relationships, easy going environment with the right manager. New CEO so things may start to look up, but serious doubt.

    Cons

Minimal training, write ups for arbitrary things (you weren't trained on), micro managing, emphasis on sales with no external marketing advertising which causes corporate to blame the stores rather than their own marketing team. Managers in the store seem to get away with a lot. High turnover rate which causes a lot of inefficiency. Other employees having to pick up others slack. Very poor sense of CSR. Many times scheduled for 7+ hours and not allowed to take a break because of scheduling errors.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Train employees better, really examine management in stores.

I have been working at Hastings Entertainment part-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Very laid back as far as retail is concerned. My manager is the best part of the company and why oh turnover rates were so low.

    Cons

Being a business major, it has been fascinating to watch. I learn a business practice one day, then see clear example of how Hastings is doing it wrong. Synapse is terrible and enforced way too hard. The company seems to be ran with absolutely no regard to the market it is operating in. Full time positions are nonexistent, and the computer system is older than I am. Updating the computers would be expensive, but well worth the investment. However, upper management seems oblivious to this as well. In the few years I've worked here, I've seen the company cycle through district managers like they were fry cooks at McDonald's and most the store in our district and surrounding districts close. Finally, the CEO is too involved in the day to day operations of the store on the rare occasion that he does visit. All in all, a good job, but by no means would I consider making this place the focus of my career.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

I honestly would not know where to begin.

    Pros

A paycheck and that is about it.

    Cons

Lower pay than before, longer hours. No training and no room for advancement. The managers are all related to the owner so you will never move up beyond a supervisory role regardless how hard you work and how much time that you put in. The relatives are lazy and unwilling to help anyone but themselves.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Take care of your employees. People fail to realize that the strength of a company is its employees and not the family members that are in charge of them.
