I have been working at Hastings Entertainment part-time for more than a year

    Pros

If you are a hard worker, it's really easy to move up in the company. The people that work there generally have fun while working. The employee discount is a huge plus. You never have to take home work. You can pick up shifts fairly easily if you know how to work in different parts of the store.

    Cons

The hourly pay left little to be desired. I have been working there over a year and they will not give me a raise. It's hard to get more than thirty hours. The scheduling at my particular store was pretty bad. They would schedule me for closing one night and opening the very next morning. Less then 8 hours between shifts sometimes. If you are under 21, it is impossible to move up to a manager position.

I have been working at Hastings Entertainment part-time for more than a year

    Pros

you get a pretty good employee discount. also, you get a bonus if you can convince customers to try a free trial of magazine subscription. other than that, not that many pros. peers are nice though.

    Cons

Management is incapable. They are lazy and just don't care. There's not a lot of incentive for regular employees to dow well. The hours aren't that flexible.

    I worked at Hastings Entertainment

    Pros

Employee discount and access to merchandise, flexible hours for students or parents, promotional activities such as midnight releases and childrens story time, decent wage

    Cons

Corporate makes sweeping changes that are not always helpful for individual stores, corporate communication with managers isnt great, sometimes we did not get requested supplies or they would change access to supplies or cancel them completely

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Communicate better and make better decisions regarding individual stores. Ship out requested items promptly

    I worked at Hastings Entertainment

    Pros

The people I worked with were fantastic. They made the day enjoyable even when things were slammed or customers were hard to deal with.

    Cons

Corporate management is out of touch with what's going on in their stores. I was in a store whose manager they liked and we still got jerked around.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Pay your employees better. Even college students need to make a living.

I have been working at Hastings Entertainment full-time for less than a year

    Pros

Awesome people to work with, discounts, and always up to date on current trends

    Cons

Open every single day of the year except Christmas and no overtime pay or holiday pay or bonuses. Anything past store manager doesn't care about anyone in the store, if something goes wrong they just blame the guy under them, Super high turnover rate

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Maybe don't treat employees like slaves, they have a life, and need respect

I worked at Hastings Entertainment part-time for more than a year

    Pros

Great products, fun and outgoing coworkers, multiple locations so you can easily transfer if having to move, structured systems that have been successfully in place for years so you can easily navigate your job without much confusion.

    Cons

Low pay with low hours and no benefits, you don't get sale prices or discounts, corporate feeling of being unappreciated and treated just like a number, corporate policies that are ridiculous such as putting you on the phone with some "employee" somewhere else who is watching your every move and suspects you of a malice practice of sorts.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Show your employees that you appreciate having them be part of the team. Some people literally put their family relationships on hold for you, the least you could do is show them that their service is worthy.

I worked at Hastings Entertainment part-time for more than a year

    Pros

-Great discount: normally almost half off books, bought a $25 HDMI cord for $5
    -Laidback working environment
    -Extremely hard to get fired
-Depending on the store, good people: I worked at 2 different stores and they were drastically different with the type of people that worked there. but most of the associates are friendly and helpful

    Cons

    -Minimum wage to start out
-maximum raise is 2% once a year
-Open every single day of the year except Christmas and no overtime pay or holiday pay or bonuses
-Poor upper management: anything past store manager doesn't care about anyone in the store, if something goes wrong they just blame the guy under them
    -Super high turnover rate
-If something breaks at the store level don't expect it to get fixed or replaced, I've been working with a broken vacuum for 2 years.

This was a fun place to work

    Cons

I don't see it much as a career builder, more of a part time situation while you go to school.
