I have been working at Hastings Entertainment full-time for less than a year

    Pros

Awesome people to work with, discounts, and always up to date on current trends

    Cons

Open every single day of the year except Christmas and no overtime pay or holiday pay or bonuses. Anything past store manager doesn't care about anyone in the store, if something goes wrong they just blame the guy under them, Super high turnover rate

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Maybe don't treat employees like slaves, they have a life, and need respect

I worked at Hastings Entertainment part-time for more than a year

    Pros

Great products, fun and outgoing coworkers, multiple locations so you can easily transfer if having to move, structured systems that have been successfully in place for years so you can easily navigate your job without much confusion.

    Cons

Low pay with low hours and no benefits, you don't get sale prices or discounts, corporate feeling of being unappreciated and treated just like a number, corporate policies that are ridiculous such as putting you on the phone with some "employee" somewhere else who is watching your every move and suspects you of a malice practice of sorts.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Show your employees that you appreciate having them be part of the team. Some people literally put their family relationships on hold for you, the least you could do is show them that their service is worthy.

I worked at Hastings Entertainment part-time for more than a year

    Pros

-Great discount: normally almost half off books, bought a $25 HDMI cord for $5
    -Laidback working environment
    -Extremely hard to get fired
-Depending on the store, good people: I worked at 2 different stores and they were drastically different with the type of people that worked there. but most of the associates are friendly and helpful

    Cons

    -Minimum wage to start out
-maximum raise is 2% once a year
-Open every single day of the year except Christmas and no overtime pay or holiday pay or bonuses
-Poor upper management: anything past store manager doesn't care about anyone in the store, if something goes wrong they just blame the guy under them
    -Super high turnover rate
-If something breaks at the store level don't expect it to get fixed or replaced, I've been working with a broken vacuum for 2 years.

I worked at Hastings Entertainment part-time for more than a year

    Pros

This was a fun place to work

    Cons

I don't see it much as a career builder, more of a part time situation while you go to school.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Treat you employees with the respect that you would like to recieve.

    Pros

I enjoyed the people I worked with. The employee discount was nice.

    Cons

They wanted me to be a department manager, but refused to give any pay raise.

Standard retail environment, but the company stifles store-level initiative.

I worked at Hastings Entertainment full-time for more than a year

    Pros

Fun atmosphere, interesting products to sell, decent time-off policy for full time.

    Cons

For the position of CSM - the company tells the CSMs they are one of the most important positions in the company, but does not back that up with pay or professional opportunities.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Listen to your stores.

I worked at Hastings Entertainment part-time for more than a year

    Pros

This is an easy job... that's about it.

    Cons

Despite being a CSA (customer service associate), I got tasked with janitorial duties such as cleaning toilets and scrubbing urine off of the bathroom walls. Other staff were lazy, and with no oversight, I was left to pick up after others, fill in when they didn't do their jobs, and get no credit. It was kind of sad, I wanted to help make the store a better place, but no one else seemed to care. I was never given my promised raise in salary (though it would only have been by .25 cents...). I knew several employees that never showed up yet no one ever bothered firing them. Really pathetic. The store was a mess.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Respect those that put forth the extra effort, reward their hard work, and fire the lazy people.

I worked at Hastings Entertainment full-time for more than a year

    Pros

I enjoyed the people I worked with, and the interaction with the vendors. Once I figured out what my job was, I was able to take pride in my accomplishments.

    Cons

Upper Management is relentless in their desire to get more out of you, by any means necessary. Working early, staying late, and working weekends were common. There was turnover at the highest level last year, and I hear things have improved. Bottom line, if there was any training, and I mean ANY training for those coming in to that office, I might still be there today.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Awesome training plan for those in the field, nothing for those in the SSC. Also, too many daily meetings, leaving you with not enough time to do your job.
