I have been working at Hastings Entertainment

    Pros

Great products, good executives, 45 hour work week, lots of potential for movement in the company, lots of autonomy and ability to make decisions in your store

    Cons

Staffing structure needs to be reworked, DM's can be hit or miss (although most are good), compensation could be higher

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Look at how store staffing is structered, maintaining stores to company standards can be difficult with current pay rates/staff levels. One associate covering the entire floor is not realistically able to maintain merchandising, customer service, and lp standards that company values

    I worked at Hastings Entertainment

    Pros

Hastings is a fun place to work, you get to see all of the books, music, video games, and movies that come out weekly. Customers can be fun as well. Most of my coworkers were fun as well.

    Cons

Low pay, and the stores did not have enough autonomy to act on there own to appeal to their local communities.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Host a BUNCH of local activities in your coffee shops, local book signings, musicians, gamers, etc. Be a true source of entertainment.

    Pros

While I worked there it was more like a second family. We all got a long and had fun. Great place to work as a first time job for experience in retail. My supervisor was a fun lady to work there but sadly doesn't work there anymore.

    Cons

The drama and unrealistic demands of corporate. I've been in recently and OMG they have turned into a micro carry all store. It's too busy and cluttered now and I feel cramped anytime I walk in.

    Pros

Was able to advance from CSA to department associate to department manager within a reasonable time frame. Great support and leadership from store managers; I.e., didn't micromanage and fostered their employee's natural strengths. Learned valuable skills that increased my value as an employee.

    Cons

Unable to move beyond living from paycheck-to-paycheck.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Employees will always be the company's greatest asset.

    Pros

They will teach you alot and the "Family" is fun to work with.

    Cons

Pay isn't good. Don't offer many hours. Can't promote very high within. Management is lacking professionality.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Clean house. Some people run the store but don't hold the title.

I worked at Hastings Entertainment full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

It was a team environment that worked well as long as everyone was on the same page. Upper management has an open door policy. It was a fun place to work.

    Cons

I witnessed a LOT of good sellable product being thrown away. I also witnessed store managers spending a great deal of company money and losing their stores (Hastings lost 14 stores in one year!). Local newspaper articles attribute the store closings to the business climate. That may be true in some cases. I personally knew a couple of the managers whose stores were closed. They closed because of poor customer service and overspending.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Hire store managers who care about customer service and get involved in their communities. This will bring customers back into the stores. Hire store managers that are problem solvers. They will take some of the problems away from upper management to keep their jobs and to keep their stores open. Hire store managers that are frugal. Allowing these frugal managers to buy their own products and supplies will keep store expenses to a minimum.
