Great work-life balance and benefits, more big-company inertia to overcome.

    Techie (Current Employee) Richardson, TX

ProsMany companies claim to be family-oriented, but most companies fail to deliver on that promise when it comes to time off, telecommuting, or 60 hour work weeks; HCSC puts other companies to shame in this regard. This company is truly committed to the welfare of its employees and their families, in addition to the communities in which they live. The executive management team adheres to the strategic vision it clearly outlines in frequent communications to all employees. A well-balanced approach to financial prudence, coupled with a non-investor-owned business model, have kept financial fortunes on solid footing, even in these tough times. A detailed questionnaire of all aspects of being an HCSC employee is made yearly, and management is truly responsive to any negative feedback; this isn't mere HR fluff.

ConsIf you're a techie, there are a myriad of job titles and compensation ranges; someone sitting in the cube next to you may be making about what you're making, but somebody sitting one floor up or down doing the same work as you may be leading a much more frugal or lavish lifestyle. As in many companies, there is a tendency to be deadline-driven in IT projects rather than quality-driven, but this culture is much more ingrained at HCSC than at other employers. This attitude seems to be resistant to change, too; perhaps compensation models for management could reflect successful completion of projects rather than simply completion of some redefined, abridged version of what they were intended to be...

Advice to Senior ManagementHCSC is the first company I've worked for where I've truly felt that management cared about me as a person and as a member of my community. But at the same time, sometimes the Chicago vs. everybody else attitude wears a little thin.

    Great Place to Work

    Manager (Current Employee) Chicago, IL

ProsDedicated to their employees, a diverse workforce, and providing the best health care possible. Over they years I have found my leadership to be supportive and collaborative in my goals. We have worked together to develop a relationship that allows for continued growth. Provides excellent customer service to both customers and employees. Invests in employees to provide engaging, comfortable work environments.

Cool HQ building in downtown Chicago.

    Nice Wellness Rewards program.

ConsCan overwhelm you with corporate red tape. Often times great ideas were not implemented because "we cannot do that here".

Processes can get in the way of innovation.

Not a leading edge company, or even a fast follower. Waits to react to market changes.

Advice to Senior ManagementAllow more freedom for your talented employees to be creative.
