Risky

Relationship Manager (Current Employee)

I have been working at Heartland Payment Systems full-time for more than a year

ProsAutonomy. Emphasis on getting results. The culture is a winning culture. The leadership in my direct chain of command is high integrity and accountability. The company reputation is very high. The job is high activity based which I prefer. I love the job. It's one I can definitely see myself doing long term.

ConsThe Financial risk is high. A good metaphor is stock options. Your paycheck is like stock options. You get paid and that money is what you owe back to the company if the customer leaves within the contract period. Even if it has nothing to do with you as the sales person. Every business you sign has a different classification and is underwritten with different criterion. So you get paid different ever time. You also have no precise expectation of what you exact take home pay will be.

Advice to Senior ManagementBe more transparent on how sales people get paid on different kinds of businesses. It should be disclosed in hiring that you would owe back commissions. That was never discussed in my hiring. I had to find out later from someone else. Let me write off the equipment I buy for my customers. Also provide a detailed report of everything you charge me on my AR.

Great opportunity to earn a 6 figure income

Division Manager (Former Employee)
Los Angeles, CA

I worked at Heartland Payment Systems full-time for more than 8 years

Prosuncapped income potential & state of the art technology to intelligently go to market with continued success.

Consthere could be a longer ramp up period depending on your skill set.

If you work hard, you will succeed.

Relationship Manager (Current Employee)
Houston, TX

I have been working at Heartland Payment Systems full-time for less than a year

ProsGreat compensation and flexible lifestyle. You get to meet lots of people and they do provide lots of resources for training and customer service. Their customer service team is the best I've ever seen.

ConsIf you don't close deals, you don't get paid, there is no base salary. Make sure you have a backup source for income, a slow month means your bills don't get paid.

Advice to Senior ManagementIt would be awesome if we got more leads. District Managers could help out more with generating sales instead of all of the motivational speeches.

Overall pretty positive organization to work for.

Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)

I have been working at Heartland Payment Systems full-time

ProsVery smart people on the management side. Great intentions and drive.

ConsManagement lives all over the country. Difficult logistically to conduct business.

Advice to Senior ManagementSlow down a little bit with the new product offerings and focus more on perfecting the current roster of solutions. Some of the new launches, although very exciting, are taking a tremendous toll on an already limited staff.

Rather then try to be the "XYZ" of the Payment Processing industry, establish ourselves as the envy of the industry by effecting change from within.

Old management unfair with their own agenda, not in the best interest of the company. New management much better.

Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)
Brook Park, OH

I have been working at Heartland Payment Systems full-time for more than 5 years

ProsGreat PTO allowance, Great employees

Consvery small financial increases to date

Advice to Senior Managementtake care of your GOOD people before they leave for broader horizons and trim the fat with those that aren't doing their jobs.

Good company

Anonymous Employee (Former Employee)

I worked at Heartland Payment Systems full-time for more than 5 years

ProsGood company to work for, treated employees fairly. In the 5 years I worked there I have to say that there were always opportunities.

ConsWhile a good company to work for, the only constant was change. Every year things changed products and services came and went.

Adaptive to new technologies but limited growth

Software Developer (Current Employee)
Tempe, AZ

I have been working at Heartland Payment Systems full-time for more than 3 years

ProsCompany adapts to new technologies (ie. Windows 8 almost immediately after RTM, latest version of development IDE), flexible work hours, free lunches every other week, challenging work.

ConsDue to "Scrum" process, we're limited to deliverables within 2 weeks. The requirements from "Product Managers" are minimal in details and they'll nag you for changes constantly. The company bends to client requirements so expect tons of overtime just to keep customers happy. There's no real software architecture due to lack of an architect and constantly changing requirements. The two week deliverable limits innovation. And our director stresses on "releasing software" which again limits innovation and good software engineering practices.

Advice to Senior ManagementSometimes great work cannot be done two weeks at a time, and nagging from management to get things done. This policy may work on "not so good" people but for the great developers, we'll just find a job that will let us do great things that we want.

New Hire

Sales (Current Employee)

I have been working at Heartland Payment Systems full-time for less than a year

ProsThe people training me have an amazing knowledge of this industry

ConsThe "try out" requirement before hiring. Instructed to set 20 appointments in advance. It is important to set and meet those appointments and I found it difficult to set them days ahead of time.

Advice to Senior ManagementFind another criteria for the hiring process.

Heartland School Solutions(HSS)

Sales (Former Employee)
Tempe, AZ

I worked at Heartland Payment Systems full-time for more than 3 years

ProsPay is good. Culture is good. Work life balance is good except for the support team. School districts are required by law to use a POS software if they want reimbursement from USDA and Heartland School Solutions (HSS) has the best ones to chose from.

ConsHSS needs a process audit real bad. Installing new levels of middle management and micro management.
