It all depends on the manager. Don't ever work for Irene Alvarez.

I worked at Helzberg Diamonds full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

Opportunity to make great client relationships with high earning potential. Can earn great experience in many different areas that will help you with future careers and life in general.

    Cons

Every store manager is different and can make or break your career with this company. I loved this company until one awful manager experience. When your store doesn't make its goal you will not make money. Pay periods have great highs but horrible lows. I had a horrible experience with corporate and human resources. I tried to report horrible discriminatory behavior of one store manager and it was not taken seriously. There is a lot of favoritism and politics no matter how high up you reach. I worked for a few different locations and always had amazing managers and a great experience working for this company. I loved my job and was very successful. I made great friendships and client relationships and really learned a lot about myself and about sales. I had a horrible experience with a store manager at the Stonebriar location in Texas. The store manager, Irene, said specifically she did not want me working there anymore because I was pregnant. I tried to report it and felt I was not taken seriously and proper actions were not taken against her at all. She still has a job, anyone who discriminates and verbally attacks an employee multiple times should not have a career anymore. Unfortunately that was not the case.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Take serious action against managers who discriminate against employees for any and all reasons. Get rid of politics and take all complaints seriously, especially when employees have witness accounts and proof of accusations made. This company could easily be involved in a large lawsuit if they do not take these things seriously and protect their employees.

I have been working at Helzberg Diamonds

    Pros

Nothing very stressful, not labor intensive, clean environment

    Cons

The company doesn't treat their employees terrible, but they don't treat them well either. You aren't paid very well, maybe managers are paid okay, but sales associates aren't so much. There is not a big discount. The company values and culture is not what it used to be, it is just a run of the mill chain jewelry store these days. The quality is not super, making it hard to sell it ethically.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

For a company with Berkshire Hathaway bragging rights, they really should have quality, reliable computers but they don't. Plus, the new stores are designed so that you have to turn your back to the customer at the same time trying to input their name, address, etc into the computer...BAD DESIGN! Flyers and coupons aren't user friendly for clientelling through the mail...they should ask advice from the people doing the job, the people in the stores, the sales associates!

    Pros

My coworkers were pretty cool, managers were tolerable. Merchandise that is sold is of modest quality.

    Cons

But the rest of the company and it's CEO and her mission statement are very two-faced and the culture is unrealistic to say the least. The sales goals are unreachable and the commission structure is pitiful.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Set realistic sales goals, and achieve realistic results.

    Pros

Pays well for top performers in higher volume stores based on personal sales results. Typically hires some of the better sales associates in the national jewelry sales category.

    Cons

Starting base is low for most associates. Technology infrastructure very outdated and behind. Associate and manager expendability has become more common. Enormous amount of expectations imposed on store managers and associates that create a tremendous amount of stress. Not an enjoyable culture or atmosphere.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Listen to the associates in the field. People are the life blood of any business. Company has lost it's once enjoyable and prideful culture. Too many contradictions in policies and performance management.

    Pros

    National chain, mostly good people.

    Cons

Really went downhill after new CEO in 2010. Quality of mdse, pay policies, commission structure.
They changed the monthly sales plans 3 times in 2010.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Don't stoop to the other Mall Jewelers level.

    Pros

They are members of the American Gem Society. There are many different and reasonable price points to work with. The benefit package seems good.

    Cons

Terrible commission rate ( starting at 1/2 a percent! ) , the goals are hard to obtain and unrealistic during these times. NO training, you really have to figure it all out on your own. Managers and assistant managers are given high goals, so they basically take all the sales. They really mislead me about how things are handled.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Management should be training their sales staff in order to build a strong team. They should never gossip about other employees and talk in detail about their personal lives and problems

I have been working at Helzberg Diamonds

    Pros

The discount for employees is excellent. The close relationship between co-workers is nice. They are a very ethical and stable company, part of the Berkshire Hathaway portfolio. They have recently become members of the American Gem Society, and have the latest state of the art tools for looking at and learning about diamonds. They reimburse for training upon completion.

    Cons

I have found that they lie to you about promotions. They do not pay well, and don't give raises out fairly. Even if you meet and exceed your goals, they always find something to put you down about. Upper management seems to enjoy intimidating employees. They constantly change the rules on how they want you to do things. Way to much gossip and much of it is started from upper management. Constantly passing the buck when mistakes are made. They make huge deals out of minor mistakes. There is a lot of favoritism that goes on. The comission structure is a joke. They have taken away a lot of benefits and perks in the past few years.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Set better examples from the top down. If upper management wouldn't intimidate store management, I think it would be a better work environment.

    Pros

    Training paid for by company
Single point pricing (or it used to be when I was there) made it easier to work with customers without the hassle of haggling.
    Continued training available

    Cons

District manager basically lies to prospective employees offering them advancement to management or large commission checks . . . none of which ever comes around. Under valued for positive contributions to the company. The new CEO is all about showing how much money she can make the company regardless of how she hurts staff to do so. Less money, less benefits, less everything except for work.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

The sales associate IS your company. You can't expect to sell a high end product when you're only willing to pay for entry level workers. The best sales staff is looking elsewhere for better pay and a more appreciative environment. Treat your staff well . . . and then watch your sales grow!
