I worked at Hennepin County Medical Center (More than a year)

    Pros

Great job for someone who likes a call center environment and lots of structure.

    Cons

Unforgiving attendance policy and the call center feels like a dungeon.

I worked at Hennepin County Medical Center full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Decent pay as far as lab techs go.

    Cons

Had to pay a lot for parking. Upper management in the lab DID NOT care about employee moral and were more interested in giving orders rather than collaborating to find logical solutions.

    Advice to Management

Focus more on the well-being of your employee's and less on your own personal agendas.

  3. I worked in the Emergency Department. I loved my job, my coworkers, and the mission we stood for!

    Pros

I think The emergency department can be a wonderful place to work depending on your supervisor and the management. I believe in the mission statement! The doctors and residents are knowledgeable, compassionate, and always striving for the best for the patient. Never have I seen care compromise at all on the basis of an economic level or insurance or lack of insurance! Most of the staff takes pride in their work. They work diligently and hard in the care on behalf of the patient!

    Cons

Huge issues with management. Constant turnover in management positions in the last 5 years. Management is huge on micromanaging. My manager wanted me to dummy down, do less work, and not to excel any further in my job. Management needs to talk to the employees more often about their jobs and what the job expectations are especially when your new or don't know! Huge turnover in employees. Over half to three quarters of the long-term employees have left the building, and management Allowed their knowledge and experience to walk out the door! Most of the nursing staff is young and inexperienced. There is a constant turnover with nurses and healthcare assistance. Consistency is lacking, knowledge and experience is limited which is completely unfortunate!

    Advice to Management

Huge lack of communication with The employees. Rarely did management discuss or confer with The employees about development, changes, ideas to improve the function and experience for the patients in the emergency department. Management tends to micromanage. Management needs to macro manage and allow the employees to excel to their best abilities, not stifle them in fear and trepidation. Listen to the employees about their experiences and knowledge in their job class especially when change and or development of new ideas are needed.

I worked at Hennepin County Medical Center full-time

    Pros

Staff are compassionate about the patient population. Many of Minnesota's physicians were trained at HCMC in medical school, residencies or fellowships.

    Cons

Many doctors have leadership titles and salaries, but aren't held accountable for changing physician culture. Maybe new CEO will make a difference. There is not a burning platform for being the "best." Good enough seems good enough seems to be the prevailing attitude.

    Pros

Easy to find meaningful ways to help people from diverse backgrounds Always something going on; no chance of feeling bored Honorable organizational mission with staff involved who like to serve patients from diverse backgrounds. Energetic, teaching hospital environment. The hospital provides exceptional care. The best cafeteria food of all Twin Cities hospitals.

    Cons

Disconnection of executive leadership to front-line staff as shown in the high rate of process changes, increasing expectations, and lack of tools to meet the expectations. Patient population with complex needs and lack of resources to address those needs, can lead to frustration. Aging infrastructure, and poorly enforced expectations regarding smoking and loitering on the grounds. Poor work-life balance opportunities e.g., no good work-out options, child-care, flexible work schedules, etc.

I have been working at Hennepin County Medical Center full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

The organizations mission and the dedication of the staff to serve the local community. Great benefits and pay.

    Cons

Dis-functional departments and too many silos. Managers do not seem to understand what is going on within their department or outside their department. Lack of growth opportunities. If you are ambitious I will recommend to try to lean as much as you can about the department you are join to make sure it is a good fit.

    Advice to Management

Focus on breaking down the silos that exist through out the organization. The place is been managed as a government entity and not as a not for profit focused on providing efficient and cost effective services. Too much waste. Also increase the focus on the outreach to more paying patients.
