Current Employee – been working at Herbergers part-time for less than a year
Pros – 20% discount for first year applies to everything and can be combined with most coupons
Cons – Unreliable coworkers, low pay for amount of work, judged on sales but not paid commission, constantly hounded about getting credits and customer compliments, pay raise is based on combination of sales and credits you receive, coupon policy must be repeatedly explained to customers because of all the exceptions.
Advice to Senior Management – Stop taking returns without receipts or tags--returning nasty old shoes, handbags, and skirts is gross and makes the store look like a rental place. Pay employees to give the service you want them to provide. A little praise would go a long way. Strike up a deal with Goodwill to do that sale year round. Customers were so much happier when they could use the coupons to buy things they wanted.

Former Employee – worked at Herbergers
Pros – Flexible schedule, other employees are usually nice people, management is good, pay is alright, the clothing discount is 25% after 1 year of employment
Cons – Management does a terrible job of disciplining poor associates, lots of time standing which is painful on your feet because you have to wear dress shoes which usually are not very comfortable, during the holiday season it gets ridiculously busy and customers are usually rude and irritated which makes your day worse as well.
Advice to Senior Management – Revamp the store because it looks like a Kohls, bring back the sturdy shopping bags with handles, put in windows on the upper floor, and CHANGE THE MUSIC EVERY NOW AND THEN.

Current Employee – been working at Herbergers
Pros – The discount is great. Most of the people who work there are nice people and do their fair share.
Cons – The pay is low for retail, but the discount makes up for it somewhat. Management has its blind spots and doesn't treat everyone equally. They put more importance on credit than doing a good job to ensure that customers have a pleasant shopping experience. Also, seniority and time of service is overrated, especially when you have people who have been there almost 20 years and don't do anymore than they need to do. It's the part time people who do 80% of the actual work and have to worry about their hours getting cut so the full timers can keep their hours and benefits. Opportunities for advancement depend on your relationships with management instead of your work ethic and sales success. Management needs to spend more time on the floor helping associates instead of putting obstacles in their way. Also, the return policy is a joke. Customers can get away with returning most anything because a manager will approve it in the name of "good customer service". I witnessed a toaster that was a year and a half old that was successfully returned. Tighten the return policy and stores might make more money.
Advice to Senior Management – Tighten return policy. Listen to associates and what they want. Quit promoting the softball/bowling team people to cash office/management jobs. Most of the full timers at my store don't work as hard as the part time people - look at demoting them to part time and reward the PT people who work hard with full time status.
