Process Support Specialist as a contractor for HP

    Process Specialist (Current Employee)
    Pontiac, MI

    ProsWork from home as needed.

ConsWorking as a contract for three years for HP through Manpower. I received very little training or support when I first started. I have no vacation time, never received a performance review or a raise. Absolutely zero possibility of advancement or hiring on to be an HP employee.

Advice to Senior ManagementOffer personal growth opportunities to contractors similar to what actual HP employees receive. Give us a reason to care about HP and the future.

    A big company

    Anonymous Employee (Former Employee)
    Sunnyvale, CA

ProsHP is such a large company, it is difficult to make generalized comments that apply to the whole entity. As a large company, there are a lot of training and technical resources available. When you need to talk to external people/companies, the HP name is well recognized and even respected despite the turmoil the company has suffered through in recent years. Which is positive.

ConsUpon starting working in Calif for this new software project based out of KY, we were told how this would be like a start-up environment but with the difference of having the resources of a big company behind us. Sounded good, but unfortunately, nothing was true.

The available budget was minimal, proper technical and marketing resources were barely available, morale was low most of the time, management was spread across the USA, group and management communication was constantly lacking and in general, everything was what the military would term snafu. Most everyone seemed to be in CYA mode much of the time.

A year later, after a failed management change with the new fiscal year, the project was downsized (effectively killed) and we lost our contract.

Advice to Senior Management1. New projects work best when everyone is in the same physical location. That includes both the workers and management. Communication is difficult enough within an established project but with a new project where everything seemed to be made up as we went along, distributed management didn't work at all.

    2. If you are going to fund a project, commit to it 100% or else don't do it. To do otherwise demoralizes everyone and winds up throwing good money down the drain.

    The Ever Changing HP

    Order Coordinator (Current Employee)
    Palo Alto, CA

ProsHP has a great work life balance with understanding challenges with kids, doctor appts. You can leave the office for doctor/dentist appt without taking time off. Benefits are good.

ConsLife at HP is changing. No more working at home. Meg wants everyone in the office but with the eventual move to Palo Alto there isn't enough space. So 70% of people will have cubes and the others will find a focus booth. Does not make sense if the reason to have everyone in is to collaborate.

No pay increase with a job promotion. Pay is not competitive with other companies.

    Not the old "HP Way"...

    Business Development Manager (Current Employee)
    Boise, ID

ProsDepending on the business unit, HP is still an industry leader and rewards excellence.

ConsThe division I worked for is dominated by internal politics and lacks the integrity I had come to expect from HP.
