    Once Great Company is Struggling

    Anonymous Employee (Former Employee)

ProsThe people are great. The benefits are good. There is plenty of challenging work.

ConsThe company is top heavy with management. It has a heavy layer of bureaucracy and politics. While the company is making herculean effort to turn around, it is faced with strong competition. The company has no choice but to down size and thus there is little job security.

Advice to Senior ManagementEliminate layers of bureaucracy. Complete the work force reductions quickly so the remaining employees don't need to worry.

    Metrics hell causes massive stress.

Technology Consultant (Former Employee) Colorado Springs, CO

ProsGreat people, intelligent products, good reputation on certain products - not so much on others. Great presence in India but that is going to bite back should the instability in that region fall through. Green and work from home for certain positions are a great benefit.

ConsMicrometric-centric, FTS model is a joke. Top level management not in touch with much more than metrics, educational support very limited, very political per advancement and based more on metrics than people skills among others, salaries seem low in comparison to other companies, layoffs always looming to impose fear and the lower salaries. Mark Hurd taking that golden parachute ruined this company and current top mgmt is TOO diversified to run it economically/efficiently.

Advice to Senior ManagementLoyalty to people over numbers is a must. Not all those that hit a rough spot in their life should be dispensable. Military contracts should be honored with a vengeance not thought of as a cash cow to be milked. Watch out for India based companies becoming security risks.

A great place to meet smart, dedicated people and learn from the best in the business.

Marketing Communications Manager (Former Employee) Palo Alto, CA

ProsUsed to have flexibility of work environment, this is what kept me working there for as long as I was there. Benefits are very good, vacation time is great, pay is above average and the people that you work with for the most part are dedicated, smart and fun to work with.

ConsToo much turmoil, new people come in from the outside with less experience and are put into roles that they are not qualified for. People are penalized for doing their jobs in some cases, i.e. raises. They have a disbursement of percentages of how many employees belong in the mid range, exceptional range and those that need improvement. Employees are forced into these categories. Hard to swallow when you know you have done an outstanding job.

Advice to Senior ManagementTreat people with the same respect and dignity that you want to be treated with. Don't assume that someone on your team is out to get your job...stop looking over your shoulder to protect yourself and take a look at your team and provide them the guidance, coaching, and praise that a great leader provides to their team. In other words, do your job.

Not the company it used to be...

Project Manager (Former Employee) Boise, ID

ProsStill enjoys a reasonably good reputation. A global player. A diverse, hard working peers.

ConsInternal chaos. With so many laid off and with the aquisition of so many diverse business a good deal of time is spent just trying to determine ownership for things that need to get done. With the talent drain, reduction in employees and lack of clear lines of authority there is a lot of 'hot potato' shuffling to avoid taking on tasks since everyone has more than a plate full. Morale has improved a bit but is still quite low.

Advice to Senior ManagementToo big. Go back to basics.

    An ex-EDSers view of HP

Information Analyst (Former Employee) Plano, TX

ProsHP is a global IT corporation serving the business and public in many facets. The work environment is good but it can be very testing to the rank and file.

ConsThe Management does not seem to care about the workers. The rank and file especially, in the US, are constantly being pushed out with their positions being sent off shore. The Clients then often end up with dramatically reduced levels of support and progress resulting in the Client looking elsewhere or pulling the work inhouse which is what occurred with the Client I supported in the end. All the HP Management can see in the short term dollars to offshoring positions. To be fair EDS was doing the same thing but to a lesser extent.

Advice to Senior ManagementHow about thinking of your staffs, all of them not just those that work for less and produce at a lower rate resulting in Client dis-satisfaction. It wouldn't hurt to forgo a few Management level raises and passing them down to the rank and file who do the physical work.
