high level management poor (circa 2000-2002)

Executive Assistant (Former Employee)
Palo Alto, CA

I worked at Hewlett-Packard full-time for less than a year

Prosco-workers were friendly, professional. location was convenient. excellent work space was provided.

Conspoor management choices--unclear direction of team(s)

Advice to Senior ManagementLeadership isn't a one time per week meeting to cover status of projects. True leadership inspires and makes a difference. None of the high level managers seemed to have that skill. Often combined with poor communication skills.

No, I would not recommend this company to a friend – I'm not optimistic about the outlook for this company

Hire better

Senior Program Manager (Current Employee)

I have been working at Hewlett-Packard full-time for more than 8 years

ProsDedicated fellow employees. When I first joined 10 years ago, it was a fantastic company. It was like a start-up in a big company.

ConsNot hiring management who cannot execute. Too hierarchical. Lack of accountability at the top. To bureaucratic. The HP Way is gone. Open door policy does not really exist. Not the place for the young and creative nor the experienced and hands-on management. Very sad, given how much talent was once at HP. I'm so much more interested in start-ups now.

Advice to Senior ManagementHire better management that look beyond the quarter. You get what you pay for when it comes to management, young talent, experience, etc ... Grow through innovation and bringing value to customers faster, not simply through cost cuts. Finally, morale is poor.

It was good experience at the beginning.

Anonymous Employee (Former Employee)

I worked at Hewlett-Packard full-time for more than 3 years

ProsSome great and hard working people. Training resources. Good benefits.

ConsNo career advancement, no overtime, no good tools, lots of layoffs. Management only cares about "their favorite team members" and not about the rest of the employees.

Lots of disrespect among team colleagues but management doesn't care.

Management sets poor examples of discipline (e.g. arrive late and leave early, watch internet, take training all day, aggressive attitude and language at all times).

Advice to Senior ManagementStart caring about all employees and less about your own agendas.

Lies, deceit, manipulation

Engineer (Former Employee)

I worked at Hewlett-Packard full-time for more than 10 years

Proshmm ... well ... I really can't think of any at all

ConsManagement, at all 10 levels, are primarily evil. While the purpose of business is to make a profit for share holders, HP will do this at any cost and without any concern whatsoever for any employee.

Advice to Senior Managementwake up, get a clue, get a heart

Very Bad experience in TS Consulting division. Fair warning!

Technology Consultant (Former Employee)
Chicago, IL

I worked at Hewlett-Packard full-time for more than a year

ProsLarge scale projects with the opportunity to work deep in the trenches with your technical track.

ConsI found the TS organization to be extremely disingenuous with how they handled business. I was lied to by my Project Manager and my client was also lied to several times during the duration of the project. I have a colleague who was kicked off a project for making a few mistakes, however, he had the needed skills to deliver the project successfully. HP told my team the client requested this individual to be removed from the project. However, we later found out in a meeting that it was HP's idea to remove him. So many lies...

The culture is to work around the clock. I've had meetings on Sundays to prepare for the upcoming week.

Sales will throw you under the bus any opportunity they get. You will be thrown under the bus eventually. During my tenure folks bragged about their 'scars' and how it was very common to get screwed over.

The delivery model is inconsistent. HP has failed numerous times. Lacks strong leadership when it comes to delivering multi-million dollar projects. You better be very good with regards to your skills and knowledge and hope you land a good project with a decent customer.

My position required a relatively hefty travel schedule. For the salary I was making it was not worth it, looking back in hindsight.

Employee moral was horrible.

HP will not execute on its Turn Around Until........

Anonymous Employee (Former Employee)

I worked at Hewlett-Packard

ProsAll Leaders execute On Meg's Mandate for Pan HP

ConsMost HP Leaders are Fear Based in Survival mode Thinking only of their own best interest at the Expense of Pan HP

Advice to Senior ManagementFocus on the Why's that Matter Most to HP Customers. STOP focusing on the HOW's.
Move from being a Tactical IT Partner to a Strategic LOB Partner focused on delivering the next level of monetized Outcomes!

IT Oracle Technical Lead

Technical Oracle Consultant (Former Employee)
Plano, TX

I worked at Hewlett-Packard full-time for more than 10 years

ProsI don't have any good things to say about my short experience with HP.

ConsHP purchased the company I worked at for 15 years. They cut everyones salary by 20% and vacation if it was over 5 weeks. Then in waves, laid everyone off during a 2 year period.

Not consistent with its Message of "Making It Matter"

IT Project Manager (Former Employee)
Washington, DC

I worked at Hewlett-Packard full-time for more than a year

ProsGREAT people in the general working population

ConsLacking clarity of vision and VERY POOR people management skills. Speaks of the value of the person but when it comes time to let people go often done in an old school value system and structure . Meg Whitman's value has yet to trickle down her organization .

Advice to Senior ManagementBe open with people about the turnaround and their job security a bit sooner than a two hour notice of termination .

I had some great times at HP but the last few years were brutal!

Anonymous Employee (Former Employee)

I worked at Hewlett-Packard full-time for more than 10 years

ProsYou would receive a pay check and there are still some great people to work with at the company.

ConsManagement is inept and running the company into the ground.
It is an absolutely awful working environment. Continuous restructuring, chaotic management, unrealistic expectations, substantial management pressure and constantly looking over your shoulder are the norm.
