I have been working at Hewlett-Packard full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

Good accountability structure with specific roles for each finance team. Ability to move around inside the company is pretty easy. Pay and benefits are average, used to be better. Work life balance is ok.

    Cons

Bonuses are not a large for non managers. Little chance to manage people in the US due to all the outsourcing. They are always looking to cut things from your overall comp, but never to give you anything new.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Stop paying yourself so much and trickle some it down.

    I worked at Hewlett-Packard

    Pros

Friendly management and co-workers, Good place for personal growth and carrier advancement. Lots of benefits and nice place to work in Houston

    Cons

Company always buying other small companies and announce laying off work force. Fear is always there

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Company is known as innovative but in recent years it did not come up with any promising new product which bring growth instead it outsourced products abroad and laying off work force to be profitable

    I worked at Hewlett-Packard

    Pros

I always had a great work/life balance as I worked at home for 9 years, and traveled to client site when needed. I like working virtually and HP supplied the equipment. Health benefits/vacation/vacation buy/ are all very nice packages.

    Cons

Low salaries are the norm. I was lured in with a bonus program which resulted in few bonuses, not due to my performance. Many positions throughout the country and world are "onsite" only which limits options unless you are prepared to move without a package. Not much room for internal promotions.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Recognize your employees for the work, time and effort given. Occasional bonuses are nice, but salaries need to increase on a more regular basis.

I have been working at Hewlett-Packard full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

There are opportunities for the aggressive (and good looking) to craft a evolutionary career across many different products and/or disciplines. The boundaries between engineering, marketing, sales, operations, finance, etc. are fairly loose so any role could combine whatever interests an employee might have.

    Cons

As mentioned in the title, there has been a steady and stealthy erosion of benefits, including less time off (for example, HP used to close at noon on Christmas eve in the US, this year it's a forced vacation day), lower pay as health and other benefits cost more, and degeneration of work/life balance with the compounding expectations of taking calls at 6AM and 9PM with overseas colleagues and "back to the office" campaign, monitored via badge use.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

People notice. You cannot demand loyalty (please refer to the annual training in the event you think I'm exaggerating) without reciprocation.

Watch out for metrics overload, Global presence makes understanding customers tough.

    I worked at Hewlett-Packard full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

Educational benefits were great at first but fizzled. Great team to collaborate with. Good lifestyle while with them except pay was not very good and got worse as Hurd left and Whitman took over. Hurd, you are not welcome for the golden parachute, you thief.

    Cons

Metrics from hell. More to life and work than metrics. Levels of engineering held their knowledge close to the vest as I expect they were afraid of someone being better than them taking their jobs... and yes, I would have if given the chance. No movement in responsibility or pay; in fact my pay scale went backwards while working for them due to Hurd's 15% company wide cut and then more after that.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Pay your front-line customer-facing people better and ease up on the metrics. Hire American workers in America even if they cost a tiny bit more.

    I worked at Hewlett-Packard full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Can work from home depending on the group you are in. Recognizable brand that has a good reputation. Do think highly of Meg Whitman, but other executive management seems to change every year or two.

    Cons

Too many groups (services and products) compete internally. Groups undermining one another to control the customer/opp. Because there are so many groups no one takes leadership to solve customer issues. Too many processes or approvals to solve a customer issue. Experienced unprofessional and bullying behavior by the bigger BU such as EG and ES. Can work from home so there is some dead weight. Not price competitive.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Decrease the number of service and product groups. Create comp plan to encourage a PAN HP approach for sales and delivery. Customer account leads need to collaborate on a weekly or monthly basis on customer calls, tactical and strategic . Rated by PAN HP wins. Need to give customer resolution approval near customer level to resolve quickly. Reduce the number of processes.

    Pros

Great people, if anyone can turn around company it is Meg Whitman

    Cons

Hard to go through a continual downsizing
I signing voluntary severance agreement in 2013 that said I could apply for employment in 2015. Now I am being blocked from this possibility.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Don't block former employees from working at HP. They have great knowledge to bring to the table.
