I have been working at Hewlett-Packard

    Pros

There is no micro-managing, hours a flexiable as long as your work is done. Management is open to hear ideas and is supportive moving within the company.

    Cons

No significant raises and not fully staffed so everyone wears different hats. San Diego site is strinking and will get smaller as the company becomes two seperate entities. Benefits continue to shrink and compensation is dismal.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Take care of your high performers and insure they do not burn out.

Good place to work, but too much focus on workforce reductions.

    I worked at Hewlett-Packard full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

Fair compensation, good benefits. Empower their employees to do their job and do it right.

    Cons

Constant re-orgs don't allow for business plans to be completed. Re-orgs are needed to adjust to market conditions, but HP is in constant re-org not allowing for continuity. They also bring upper management from outside the company in the hope that someone has the solution.
Workforce reductions have their employees working scared verses being able to focus on working on their job.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Promote and foster growth within the company.

    I worked at Hewlett-Packard full-time (more than 8 years)

    Pros

Smart, dedicated and caring people. The work can be challenging and there's still some innovation going on in different parts of the company.

    Cons

Still recovering from the damage done by previous three CEOs and various board members. Innovation suffered under the Mark Hurd regime and customer satisfaction wasn't a major concern. Lots of turmoil, perpetual re-organizations, and many really good people walking out the door. Meg Whitman caught the Marissa Mayer virus and did away with teleworking, which was a huge benefit in light of low salaries. Now the company is splitting in two, which is pretty ironic considering that the previous CEO, Léo Apotheker, was sacked simply for speculating about doing this.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Remain focused on customers and treat your employees as they deserve to be treated.

Excessive controls block real work from getting done

    Former Employee - Devops Engineer

I worked at Hewlett-Packard as a contractor (more than a year)

    Pros

Good people to work with and at least HP provides a common enemy via their policies to unify the teams against.

    Cons

Tons of bureaucratic red tape to get anything done. Anti-remote worker policy. Constant reorgs. HP really shoots themselves in the foot with their policies.

I have been working at Hewlett-Packard full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

The remnant of old HP way is still the best thing about the company. It can be employee friendly.

    Cons

There is no consistency of vision, execution or culture. You may experience an entirely different company as you move from one team to another.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

HP must invest in new systems and processes to reduce inefficiencies and bureaucratic bloat.

I have been working at Hewlett-Packard full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

HP really promotes a teamwork environment, the people I've worked with over the past 7 years have truly been amazing. I've never experience conflict and have always experienced a strong level of collaboration, commitment to our common goals and support for one another. HP also offers many opportunities to continue your personal growth and learning with an extensive selection of web based training modules, in class workshops and virtual sessions for any topic.

    Cons

It is very difficult to advance your career (salary) at HP and we are constantly going through management, leadership and organizational changes.
