A great first date but...

Anonymous Employee (Former Employee)
Campbell, CA

I worked at Hightail full-time for less than a year

ProsThe company provides very strong benefits and decent compensation if you can negotiate well during the hiring process. Various small perks to the company such as catered lunches on Mondays, multiple kitchens with snacks and drinks and access to a variety of restaurants within walking distance. HR tries their best in trying to keep employees happy and relaxed by providing different events such as "Movie Day," Friday "Lounge" time and gym access.

ConsTraining was very disorganized and felt segmented. Felt very inadequate to handle daily roles due to improper education and numerous bugs within the product leads to an endless amount of complaints and troubleshooting.

No, I would not recommend this company to a friend – I'm not optimistic about the outlook for this company

Needs some help

Contract Software Eng (Former Employee)
Campbell, CA

I worked at Hightail as a contractor for less than a year

Pros- Good for the A player looking for an easy gig so can work on side projects.

- Good for B, C players looking for a paycheck or to build some skills (if that's possible).

- Overall OK culture.

Cons- Tech stack is such a mess that it takes 1-2 weeks to do 4-8 hours of work.

- Too much manager circling around doing nothing.

- Too much time spent on old technology stack instead of just putting it into proper maintenance mode and moving to something new (hint hint).

- Bug bugs bug bugs. Man the web interface is loaded with UX/UI glitches. It's buggy. I mean it's really sad. The backend is a stinker too with loads of cruft from old projects and failed initiatives.

Advice to Senior ManagementI think your destiny is set because you have competition that's blown you over. You don't have any real vision that I can see. No strategic leverage in the market. So I supposed just get bought up and that's about it. If I were the boss..

1. Dump these managers for the most part they don't do well.
2. Freeze the current stack except for enterprise.
3. Build a new stack ASAP.
4. Hire only A players and compensate them well.
5. Come up with something that will add value beyond the "let's find a new shiny little interface for people to upload their files to [that's full of bugs]".

Location, Location, Location - Product - Otherwise, need more to this

Anonymous Employee (Former Employee)
Campbell, CA

I worked at Hightail for less than a year

ProsEmployees - nice people individually, some groups have got it together
Location - perfect
Product - send big files
Benefits - ok

Consnew management - no previous experience
there's a lack of comraderie and fearful that they will lose their jobs
allowing good employees to leave the company
lack of accountability
lack of convenient parking

Advice to Senior ManagementReflect back to one the points in the Peanut Butter Manifesto, "lack of focus, accountability and decisiveness—were actually just symptoms of a deeper problem".

Poor management and poor decision-making

Senior Manager (Former Employee)
Campbell, CA

I worked at Hightail full-time for more than a year

ProsYouSendIt is in an exciting space with players like Dropbox, Box, SkyDrive, etc. Brad Garlinghouse is on a mission to turn the company around.

ConsVery poor management that lack a clear vision, strategy, and goals. This results to employees that are unfocused and unmotivated. Management make poor decisions that negatively impact team morale. Functional groups lack necessary goals that are not aligned to company goals.

Advice to Senior ManagementEvaluate whether the right people are in the right roles to successfully lead a team. Perform an extensive exercise to evaluate each departments' strategy and goals to ensure they align to the company goals and enable employees to succeed. Establish a clear identity in the market and then stick with it.

Long term third player in the files sharing market with continually poor leadedership.

Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)
Campbell, CA

I have been working at Hightail full-time for more than a year

ProsMedium size company, great location, free lunches, good swag.

ConsSr. management has no idea what they are doing and has become a buddy network. No longer a fun place to work that has a good solid direction and no upward promotion unless you are already a senior level.

Not a bad place, but needs work

Anonymous Employee (Former Employee)
Campbell, CA

I worked at Hightail

ProsThe company's financial outlook is solid and there are many competent people who are pleasant coworkers.

ConsMany employees who have been there for a long time stubbornly refuse to change their work habits, with the tacit approval of management. Some departments have had a shakeup as a consequence, with good results, but some departments lag. Some middle management would rather appease upper management than do the right thing for their group. Despite good financial outlook, FInance is far too miserly and doesn't allocate funds to where they're needed. Interdepartmental communication is subpar.

Advice to Senior ManagementLet go of the pursestrings and trust your people to ask for the right things. Understand that asking for people to hurry is to risk mistakes; accept those mistakes, or give them more time.
