I have been working at Hilti USA full-time (more than 8 years)

    Pros

The Company has the most detailed training of any organization out there. There is more structure and detailed reports than you could possibly imagine. Your results will be sifted and dissected completely.

    Cons

The Culture of open and honest feedback has been replaced by deceit and intimidation. The former owner, Michael Hilti, would really be ashamed if he knew how his company was being ran in the US. There are few regional managers with any true sales tenure. They will tell you that they sold in the field, but few have more than 3yrs. field experience. 95% have less than 5 yrs. of field sales experience and it is evident when they speak.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

The Products, Customers, and seasoned employees make the company great, not you. You have taken the best job in the world and ruined it. Stop lying about the retention rates. We are continually losing good workers and replacing them with ignorance. The addition of EMT members that have not worked for Hilti prior to becoming EMT members is tragic.

I have been working at Hilti USA full-time (more than 8 years)

    Pros

Great place to start out as a young professional–opportunities to gain applicable experience for later when you realize it's time to aim for higher work/life goals and get the heck out.

    Cons

Current CEO has little integrity, seems very insecure and requires yes-men. He was like that back when he ran Hilti Latin America, so thought it was a surprisingly bad judgment call on part of the board to put him as head of HNA. Morale results speak for themselves.
With OCJ, Hilti puts the "cult" in culture. Spiritual sherpas. Stuffed toys. People dancing in animal costumes. Going to "camps" and experiencing some of that stuff was just CREEPY.
If you specialize in a certain area of expertise and not interested in moving to a different area, your chances for advancement are low. You will eventually hit a fork in the road: A) Look for something more challenging or (B) wait to be laid off (I took choice A).
R&D (located at HQ in Europe) doesn't always focus their resources on fulfilling needs of the market, rather falling into a trap of making something cool that customers don't necessary want or need.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Senior leaders, grow a pair and stop being yes-men. CEO, please leave.

I worked at Hilti USA full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Many products are considered high quality compared to competitors. They finally got rid of Ford Transits and now have option for truck and large vans as vehicle options. Tool repair turnaround is 5-6 days. Good after-market services on most products.

    Cons

For a sales company, Hilti has unusual management philosophies. The way salespeople are paid changes with the wind. Employees do not have a say on their targets. Targets and quotas magically appear with no qualitative or quantitative explanation or getting buy-in. You are told to just accept them and then they use them against you when you don’t achieve them. Senior management is arrogant and egotistical and never address the morale problem. Meetings and conference calls are quiet. Regional managers and sales people are frightened to speak up. It’s unnerving. What’s worse is that the division and regional managers I had knew very little about construction or Hilti products to be helpful to there salesmen. So me and my fellow salesmen just wondered around blindly.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Go back to basic on how to treat employees. Most employees have little respect for managers. Hilti has a potential to be a better company but the poor leaders that are in place will prevent the company from being a good place to work. I wish my former fellow employees the best.

I have been working at Hilti USA full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

    Recognized as a quality tool
    Values college degree
    Competition copies
    Training on products
    Tend to hire good people
If your family doesn't mind moving, it can be an ok place to work.
Good company for 2-3 years then go to a better company.

    Cons

    Pay is very low
    Negative attitude of management.
Management is incompetent and they poke fun at their subordinates. No direction and no help after basic training. Revolving door of managers.
Quarterly changes to how people are paid causes a deep lack of trust.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Hilti needs a complete replacement of division managers, general managers, and ceo. Morale of field salespeople will soar once competent managers are in place that appreciate Hilti and truly care about teamwork. Compared to other companies I have been with, this leadership is pathetic in how it treats people and poor in managing day to day operations. Stop changing territories so much. In my 4 years so far with Hilti, I have had 3 Regional Managers. Two of them knew nothing about Hilti, construction, or how to sell an expensive product. Move away from your laptops and lead. We will follow you if you start setting an example and give us reason to trust you.

I have been working at Hilti USA

    Pros

Great benefits: good vacation, personal days, great medical and dental. Good 401k, as well. I haven't seen other companies in the industry provide what hilti provides. Decent people.

    Cons

Basically, it's a dead end job with crappy pay. No pay increases either.

Management isn't around, not that I need them around, but when they do show up they are counter-productive. They do not provide support nor do they develop their People. All talk and no action.

I've been with the company for a while and for a long time I gave them an honest chance but nothing changes except the faces. The results are always the same.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

My advise is for management to go somewhere else. Too many of them lead by spreadsheets and have no idea what is going on in the trenches. Essentially this is a sales company but most of these managers wouldn't be able to sell a tool even if the price was $0. Incompetent and ineffective leadership must come to an end.

    Pros

    Great Products
    Solid Innovation (product)
Although salary is lower than average the benefits are excellent despite the recent changes to the health plan

    Cons

Poor leadership at the highest level
Puppet management - Senior managers look to the CEO to see if he agrees before expressing his view.
Senior management main concern is Senior management.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Have worked here over 15 years and have never seen the morale worse.
Time to make a change so that Hilti can move forward.
Unfortunately we are not sure that the people that can make change recognize the problem.

Company is hiring over paid talent with fancy resumes. They have little knowledge of the business so you are forced to teach them the business.

    Cons

Great Products good people worth promoting.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Don't have such a self esteem problem. There is organic talent worthy of promotion. Stop wasting money on people with fancy resumes that never work out.

I have been working at Hilti USA

    Pros

Many companies will hire you because of the training hilti provides.
o.k. benefits if just graduated from college

    Cons

    Underpaid
Too many tasks and not much direction
They hired MBA graduates that have no people skills and sales skills.
Newer management have never spend time in the field or dont have experience in sales.
    No Opportunities for growth.
Very small amount of diversity, mostly caucasian about 95%..

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Hilti was a great company to work for, too bad the recent changes in management have made the work environment not suitable for hard working individuals that would give their personal lives time to go the extra mile for hilti.

    Pros

I recieve a paycheck right now.

    Cons

It is like a high school clique. If the leadership doesnt like you they will do everything to make it mioserable for you. Even if you are successful. Skew numbers, hide reports, disinformation. For every interview you go on there are 7 other Hilti resumes in the pile

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Get some people in place that have real world business acumen and arent just text book soldiers.

    I worked at Hilti USA

    Pros

The people you work with are great
    The training is comprehensive
Car, credit / gas card, cell phone, insurance, computer

    Cons

Not long ago (pre 2004) Hilti was a great company to work for. True, their Gung Ho culture with the stuffed animals was absurd, however, upper and middle management were focused on sales and sales growth. Now Hilti is more focused on the paperwork and tracking their account managers by using SAP to ensure the I's are dotted and the T's are crossed.

Forget about a promotion, advancement is all but impossible. Unless of course you graduated from Thunderbird School of Global Management.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Figure out something quick before your entire sales staff all quit. Even in a recession people would be better off leaving Hilti than sticking around to see what happens. Actually listen to your GEOS survey for once, start paying your employees for the time, effort and energy they put in and maybe a qualified sales force will come back.

Pick some different places to recruit from besides Thunderbird!
