The employees at Hitachi are first-rate, but young employees have little choice in their roles and practice.

I worked at Hitachi Consulting full-time (more than an year)

    Pros

At Hitachi, I worked with some of the best people in my experience. Every member of my project team was ready to help with tasks, teach or train on applications, or work together to solve problems. There are numerous employee resource groups to help connect with people with similar interests or goals, such as charity fundraising, social planning, or minority groups. Additionally, Hitachi has great benefits and vacation policy.

    Cons

Unfortunately, for me, the cons outweighed the pros at Hitachi. As a college hire, I was not given any choice on the type of work I was involved in. I was pulled into an area outside my interest and expertise, and it became apparent that I would not be able to exit this practice without leaving the company. I also landed in a project whose management fostered a very negative culture of work-life balance. Team members were often called unexpectedly to work long or late hours on both weekdays and weekends.

I worked at Hitachi Consulting full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Busy schedule, Plenty of work, Diverse business culture

    Cons

Low salaries, lack of product experience, old school management style

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Regional practices are not really open to "national practice" model that has been invoked and dictated

    Pros

The job is relatively stress free, management is good.

    Cons

Too fragmented, no true sense of team unity.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Be consistent in how you handle personal issues with employees. When one employee has a personal crisis and the CIO is rallying everyone around the team and another employee has a crisis and the CIO doesn't so much as say a word, it demonstrates a problem with consistency.

    Pros

    Good Health and dental plans

    Cons

You are selected for projects if people know you personally. If you are not known, you will be overlook and further ignored for utilization, sales and project management opportunities.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Need a better way of utilizing all employees, not just the popular ones.

    Pros

The people are incredible and the culture is fun. Pretty good work life balance (contingent on the project)

    Cons

The projects fall a little short. You need a technical background or desire to fully appreciate the projects. Also bonuses are not very competitive

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Better bonuses and more diverse project (Strategy implementation)

I have been working at Hitachi Consulting

    Pros

Initiative is generally recognized and rewarded
Company is willing to make investments where appropriate
Company can leverage a big name even though they are small
Leadership generally reactive to employee needs (seems to be changing)
Travel is usually accomodating (travel if you want or stay local if you want)
Nice winter holiday break (office shuts down for at least a week)
Generally turns down staff augmentation work unless very strategic

    Cons

Horribly corrupt salary bands (ex: some SC salaries > some SM salaries)
Poor total compensation (little/no bonus, no 401K match, zero 2010 raises)
Out of touch senior leadership that also plays favorites
Messed up culture born from growth by acquisition with an inability to grow organtically
    Large inconsistencies between geographies

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Almost every con I listed can be attributed to growth by acquisition. We are a big melting pot of different organizations, each with its own salaries and cultures. Perhaps Hitachi Consulting needs to put the brakes on fast growth and establish a consistent message, strategy, and culture before trying to grow rapidly.

    Pros

    Time Off
    Work-Life Balance
    Ability to live anywhere

    Cons

    Low, Uncompetitive Salary
    No 401k Matching

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Your words of encouragement mean nothing if you don't compensate your consultants with competitive salaries. Get used to employees moving on to bigger and better companies. "You get what you pay for..."

    Cons

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Be what you are until something bigger comes along
Remember it is all about the people - this is consulting

Can be a god place to work if you are in IT, not a good place for management/business consulting.

    I worked at Hitachi Consulting

    Pros

Interesting projects and people, but they are a technology company not a management/business consulting firm. The projects are driven by vendor packaged solutions

    Cons

what Hitachi consulting? It's a collection of acquired companies that have different work ethics and quality standards.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

cultural and values clash between acquired companies needs to be addressed, and that doesn't mean bringing values to the least common denominator
