Great mid-size consulting firm but has its growing pains

Senior Manager, Specialized Services (Current Employee) Dallas, TX

Pros- Engaged and open practice and executive leadership
    - Emphasizes a well-rounded consultant and not just pure technical skills
    - Provides opportunities for those that desire different career path - technical vs functional/managerial
     - Able to get engaged in projects earlier on when compared to bigger firms - get experience faster

Cons- Experiencing growing pains after re-alignments
    - Can be difficult to attract talent because name is not widely known
    - Support services (HR, Operations, Recruiting, etc...) is a little short staffed compared to current size and growth projections
    - Limited budget for vendor training
    - Difficult to get buy-in for non-billable initiatives even if, long-term, the investment is worth it
    - Because consultants ramp up their skills more quickly, find that large firms are pursuing them more actively which leads to some turnover of really good, young talent and a mid/top heavy organization

    Amazing Team To Work With

    Architect (Current Employee) Dallas, TX

ProsHitachi Consulting has some of the brightest people I've ever worked with. They consistently demonstrate excellence in their work and deliverables and thought leadership in their solutions and recommendations. I love coming to work every day and being challenged and inspired by my peers and leadership. Because of the relationships we've developed with various vendors and partners, I've also had many opportunities that I would never find in another organization.

Despite being a mid-sized company, Hitachi Consulting frequently competes with the top IT and Strategy Consulting firms in the U.S. The focus on projects versus staff augmentation contracts ensures that the work is both challenging and rewarding.

ConsAs a young company having been formed from several acquisitions, the culture at Hitachi Consulting is still very much in flux. While this offers opportunities to influence the culture and define the work environment, it also leads to inconsistencies in go-to-market strategy, employee expectations and measures, and internal communication.

Advice to Senior ManagementWhile an attitude of "profitability first" may seem appropriate in the current economic climate, it is not particularly encouraging to employees. Everyone needs to understand the need to control costs and drive revenue, but focusing on the bottom line at the expense of employee needs will have a significant impact on retention and morale--both of which will affect the developing culture, partner relations, and revenue stream as significantly as any of the other measures being taken to ensure a profitable company. In other words, take care of the employees and they'll take care of your profitability.

    Super People, good benefits

    Director (Current Employee) Dallas, TX

ProsThe people are great, smart and professional. There are great things on the horizon with the new CEO in place.

Cons401k match could be better and of course, compensation could be higher, but all in all it is a great place to work.

Advice to Senior ManagementHitachi Consulting should continue to recognize people for the great work they do. The quarterly meetings, community service activities and office events are keys to maintaining the great culture inherent there.

Lots of good people, but lacking in overall cohesiveness

Senior Manager (Current Employee) Dallas, TX

ProsThere are many good people if you can get involved with them. Good partnerships with several key software vendors.

ConsWay too much politics. Too much unfriendly competition between teams across the nation. Executive management doesn't appear to be genuinely concerned with making it a better place to work.

Advice to Senior ManagementDon't do the employee satisfaction surveys just to get an aggregate score - actually read and heed some of the feedback people give you in them! Stop trying to make it into another Arthur Andersen and just go with what works for the group you have.
