I worked at Hitachi Data Systems full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

Bonuses were good when we had them. Great products. There were many hardworking and dedicated people who were a pleasure to work with

    Cons

Found leadership not trustworthy - especially in HR where I heard leaders expound on absolute lies.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Yes, HDS is consistently on the most ethical companies list. However, they seem more to adhere to "the letter" of the law and not the "spirit." Leaders are ethical in the strictest sense, but they are also pompous and closed minded when it comes to culture and team issues. Watch the HR organization. They largely don't know what they are doing.

    Pros

The people are great to work with. Excellent flexible working schedule. Education opportunities are excellent.

    Cons

Senior management doesn't force change when its needed. They are afraid of change even when some senior managers have stated that we need to change processes to get to market on time.
Not enough people to do the work causes some areas to work excessive hours. Yet in some departments they hire like it's going out of style. Inconsistent where resources are needed.
    Pay raises are minuscule.
The public released average salary structure is based upon the Sales employees so it looks like all employees make a high salary.
Increases in employee medical insurance costs are passed down to the employee, which have doubled and some plans more than doubled.
Nothing is ever done about problem employees.
The low attrition rate is skewed because they keep half of your bonus until the end of the year. If a person leaves before the end of the year, they can't collect the 50% held.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Management needs to listen to what is going on around them and make changes to increase the positive growth of the company. The company has the attitude that if its worked this way for the last 20 years, don't change it. Positive change produces growth and growth produces revenue.

    Pros

Company has decent work-life balance (a lot of the population is remote). Nice gym.

    Cons

Extremely top-heavy organization. HDS shells out big bucks to hire and keep Directors+ happy, leaving little resources and growth opportunities to individual contributors. Does that make for better leaders? Not particularly. HR riddled with favoritism and politics, if you don't play 'the game', you won't get anywhere. Turnover has been so high in the past 2 years in my department, everyone is new. Extremely frustrating workplace for anyone that is below the director level. Don't expect to be compensated fairly either, but do expect to have work dumped on you with no appreciation.

    Pros

People are great, Quality products. HDS cares about customers. The Hitachi mother ship is world class as well. Senior management is good.

    Cons

HR leaves a bad taste in the mouth. HR tries to do the management role with clerks, instead of letting the managers manage. Pay for performance in HDS does not mean that they will pay you for your level of performance, instead it is how the entire company performs - i.e. the turkeys get what the stars get.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Purge HR below the SVP level and hire people people, not company process people. Pay for individual performance

    Pros

Worked there 18 years and have been retired about 5. I read all the reviews and see nothing much has changed. Management still thinks it's great and everyone else says management is a problem. Workers were always great. Products should have been

    Cons

Management has always been a problem. We use to say if you don't like management wait 18 months and it will all be a different group.

    Hire professional managers from outside.

I worked at Hitachi Data Systems full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Remote work options, onsite gym, cafe, some really nice people that are easy to work with

    Cons

-Company has not hit bonus targets in 2 years and they don't offer stock. What your left with is just your base salary and for a tech company in Silicon Valley it's really not competitive.
-Aging workforce and they are just now starting to get some young blood in with the new internship program, but generally they hire experienced professionals with industry experience. If you are young, it's hard to fit in and move up in rank.
-Lots of people work here long term because the performance bar is set so low for a lot of people and they aren't good enough to find a job at other more successful companies.
-Company products lack innovation and are just copycat products of successful ideas other companies thought of first.
-Lots of politics and in-fighting within all groups. HR is one of the worst divisions you could possibly work in.

    Pros

HDS tries to respect work life balance & do not schedule calls before 8:00AM or after 5:00PM

    Cons

Immature internal processes. budget cutbacks and missed bonus's inspite of achieving record revenue goals is worrisome. HDS has cancelled their annual kickoff two years in a row. and delisted HIT from nasdaq. saving yourself into poverty is a dangerous sign as there is $0.00 spent on marketing. HDS also has failed to keep up with software development & feature functionality demanded by the marketplace.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

The current management is struggling to meet the newer complexity of customer demands, The mom & pop family culture is great but unable to scale to meet the increasing market share goals. lack of process is leading to excessive concessions and increased customer satisfaction issues.

I have been working at Hitachi Data Systems full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

Gym onsite, new cafe ( but mediocre food), health club reimbursement, friendly coworkers.

    Cons

With the changes in management the past 6 years and setup of new processes the company has become somewhat inefficient...ironic. Many new employees lose motivation after seeing people complacent and just getting by. Upper Management preaches for lowering expenses in the townhall meetings, however they are exempt from this as they spend up to 10k one flight and get large sums of bonuses even when the company is not doing well. This had brought morale down significantly.
Compensation for normal employees is below market. You are better off at a public company with stock options.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Reward the good employees and provide career development and more promotions. If you are asking to lower expenses, please don't turn around the next day and travel 1st class expensing 5-10k on one flight. If you really want people to admire, trust and respect you... Take coach!!! And pool together your bonuses to reward good employees. You need to be humble like warren buffet and stop the corporate greed.
