I worked at Hobby Lobby part-time (more than an year)

    Pros

Store staff sizes are small enough that everyone knows each other, and you will most likely help out with many aspects of the business (stocking, pricing, cashiering, cleaning, answering questions, etc.) despite what your official job title is. You receive a $50 Christmas bonus from the company. 15% employee discount at your store. Sundays off and reasonable day hours.

    Cons

Minimum wage, even after a year of service. Employees at my store were not allowed to talk with each other, nor be in the same aisle as one another. High turnover rate among staff. Cashiers were not equipped with barcode scanners (everything is hand-punched). Employees not allowed to use store bathrooms to change into work uniform (bathrooms are for customers).

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

I understand that retail jobs require little experience or training, but I believe that talking to your employees as opposed to belittling them in front of coworkers may yield a more motivated workforce that performs better as a team.

I have been working at Hobby Lobby part-time (less than an year)

    Pros

It is fun and fast paced work. Great co workers, nice products and clean environment

    Cons

Nearly impossible getting a rare full time position, training is scarce, mostly self taught. Management knows for every employee that gives up waiting for a full time position and quits, there are at least 50 more to take that slot.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Please, please force better training for the low level employees. Don't assume your store managers are making that happen, ask the employees.

I have been working at Hobby Lobby full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

good benefits, Sundays off, Decent pay for retail, good 401k plan, 15% discount on all merchandise, including clearance

    Cons

corporate continues to demand more from stores with less help, becoming harder to do a good job when stretched so thin, customer service and employee moral are suffering:(

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

remember that your store employees are what makes or breaks you, cutting payroll only hurts your customers, Department staff cant give service on the sales floor if they are all on a register, customers are dropping their items and walking out the door, and get the scanners going already, we are 30 years behind other retailers.

I have been working at Hobby Lobby (more than an year)

    Pros

Christian values like Sundays off. I am a people person I like people. You are never really one thing which means you get a round. Great magazine that is available for personal growth. Too bad management doesn't read it

    Cons

Everything in your training is wrong management ask you to walk the ladders if you don't you are considered of no value. we are asked not to call other stores which makes customers angry and there is no recourse for management if they don't follow rules because they say it was misinterpreted and employees are afraid to speak up. Management treats most people like they are stealing but when confronted with real shop lifters they don't act

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

There should be a hotline for employees to call in for things like walking ladders and and other things training videos ask us to do or at least survey it would be a dream job otherwise and more surprise visits so they can see first hand this violations

I worked at Hobby Lobby full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

a great place to work. I started with them as a part-time cashier and worked my way all the way up to co-manager position where I ran my store pretty much because of an incompetent manager. they really take care of hourly employees with a good pay rate, insurance and every other weekend off. The way they open new stores is a really cool process too that brings jobs to the community. ive opened 30-40 stores for the company and took part in almost all stores built in florida. Great DMs in Florida, if you have the option on where to go id work for Nick Hiller.

    Cons

not much of a work life balance because being salary you sometimes have to work every weekend. The pay for salary managers is also terrible for how much work youre expected to put in. For being a Christian based company with a very black and white attitude theres a lot of grey area in the way they do things. Most co's that come in from other big box retailers are terrible and have horrible work ethic. Growing to fast for their own good

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

I worked all over the country opening stores for the company.. Ray Baker was the best man to ever work for. Also my Dm in florida Nick Hiller was my favorite boss ive ever had. Also Lee in the Washington area was great as well. I think that recruiting needs to do a better job with the people that they bring into the company. The lady they put in my store as a Co is the reason im no longer with the company

I have been working at Hobby Lobby

    Pros

I love my position in Custom Framing. Working with customers in this department is very rewarding.

    Cons

The store can get very, very messy, mostly because of college students. This makes recovery at night long and arduous.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Please train management in how to manage poor/ineffective employees. We have a lot of unchecked ineffectiveness that gets put onto other employees. No performance evaluations and all employees get paid the same.

I have been working at Hobby Lobby part-time (more than an year)

    Pros

Off on Sunday, Great place for creative people, frendly co-workers. very fast pace.

    Cons

only promotes from the outside. co-workers only care about there departments. We are suppose to have 24 hours to work freight. We really only have one day. Manager is very miniplitve, and likes to harass. work schederal is put out on Friday or saturday.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Start promoting from within. concider your emploiees, put out schedural sooner.

I have been working at Hobby Lobby full-time

    Pros

Good pay. Twice the minimum wage for full time employees. Christmas bonus every year is a plus.

    Cons

Work-life balance isn't the best, but it's better than what you get at other retail stores. It can be hard to get time off, especially if you work part time.
