Current Employee - Warehouse Co-Manager in Oklahoma City, OK

    Pros

Excellent working conditions, Clean warehouse with newer equipment, Medical facility on site open to employees at no cost. Processes are set and easy to execute

    Cons

There is a small amount of "good old boy" management structure but it is slowly being weeded out. Expect to work long hours and deal with large amounts of employees

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Institute three 8 hour shifts instead of trying to work 2 shift 10-11 hours a day plus Saturday. More structure for managers is needed. Decide on what is needed for advancement and let people know expectations.

    Pros

Very friendly environment and easy to get a long with co-workers. Customers are welcoming and usually easy to please. There is perks being Full-time or above once you can get into the company.

    Cons

Massive pay cut to what I am use to and looks hard to get a raise unless someone is fired or leaves.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Part-time people able to receive promotions and benefits like Full-time employees.

  3.

    Pros

Decent starting salary for comparable jobs in this area: $9/hr for part-time, $14/hr for full-time. (2013)
Pleasant work environment. Most employees friendly and considerate of others.
Customer service is the highest priority. Monthly training videos reinforced skills.
    Store kept neat and organized.
    Store closed on Sundays.

    Cons

The work schedule was posted at the last minute, making it difficult to plan for family/friend time or to make appointments. There was no method for scheduling holidays either. Employees only knew 2-7 days in advance whether or not they would work on a certain Holiday.
No extra compensation for extra responsibilities (such as managing a department or assistant store manager), or for years of experience. Employees made the same wages whether they worked there 2 weeks or 20 years.
Part-time employees are required to work every Saturday (no exceptions).
Full-time employees are required to work every other Saturday.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Create a plan for Holiday work schedules: alternate who works or have a Holiday sign-up sheet for the whole year. Employees should know well in advance for planning family time, travel, etc.
Extra incentives for a job well done would be a great motivator; additional Saturday off, more pay, etc.

    Pros

Get to work for pretty good wages, especially for a retail store.
    Good hours, can be flexible.

    Cons

While the head of the company is indeed Biblical as they claim, some managers just do their own thing. I had one manager that would keep us until nearly ten each night, then after he left we had one that kept us only as needed (generally nine at the latest) and we were all a lot happier and more unified with the second.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Get all the managers on the same page.

    Pros

Excellent hours for management. Every other weekend off. Excellent staff to work with at most stores.

    Cons

Excessive corporate visits. Store Manager salary is low. Under performing managers are kept employed too long.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Store Managers are under paid in my opinion. Higher pay and less visits.

Current Employee - Certified Custom Framer in Hobbs, NM

    Pros

Multiple areas to work in and skills to learn and every Sunday off unless it was inventory week. Caring management and a sense of pride in the workplace.

    Cons

Makes holidays difficult to enjoy. For example, you are tinseled and glittered out by September of every year so all you can think about during any holiday celebration is work. I literally sneezed glitter for hours after work every day the second half of every year.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Hire more holiday part-time help.

Former Employee - SALES CLERK in Sheboygan, WI

    Pros

It is a laid-back, Christian based company that sells crafts and furniture, as well as home goods. The company gives its employees Sundays off, which I think is wonderful for family and worship.

    Cons

You must constantly be on your toes, ready to assist customers and complete projects given to you by your boss and management.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Be pro-active in listening to your employees- it's the little guys that execute the most important jobs- direct customer contact. Without customers, you do not have a company!! Make sure you have enough employees at registers so the full-time department mangers can fulfill there duties without or very little stress. The current manager would do well to treat his employees with kindness and respect, rather than an Iron Fist with some nearly unattainable and non-company issued rules and regulations.

    Pros

Off Sundays, close at 8, no crazy holiday hours, Holiday bonus. Pay is awesome for retail.

    Cons

Management always sucks, too much to do, not enough payroll, register system, stupid dm's

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

So, I've worked with this company for over 10 years and the biggest problem is staffing. I understand it all depends on sales and whatnot but it's pretty ridiculous when you have a 120 hour reset and you only work 5 hours a day. Oh, and you're doing said reset by yourself. Also, the register system is a joke. But I'm sure you already know that. Also, Keep your department heads off register please. It's hard to get stopped what you're doing just to ring up 1 customer and then go back. Not worth it.
