I have been working at Holiday Retirement

    Pros

Love the residents-built good relationships with them. 3 meals/day, rent free, benefits.
    Very challenging position.

    Cons

Too demanding, we are community managers and we are working there more then 60 hours/week-not including the e-calls at night. My husband continues to go down there on days off, because there's so much work-maintenance issues amongst other things.
We are understaffed. The company cuts corners, is cheap, pays little and demands more hours. I used to work 70-80 hours/week, but stopped giving them my time. I care for the residents, but have to let go. I pray for upper management to get a heart and care for the community, residents and the ones they hrie.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

It starts with the ones you hire-treat them right, pay them right, respect them-stopping belittling them and give them credit where credit is due. Give them more money for staff. Stop picking on them. Encourage them, believe in them. Get a change of heart. If upper management does not change, it will forever stay the same. Kai- if you're in this for the money, it will continue down the cold, revolving path it's on. To be successful, you need ot like and care about people more then money-otherwise what's the point. Have a passion-love what you do even if you don't get paid for it-then you're on the right track. Get a warm heart, change your attitude, or change your career.

I have been working at Holiday Retirement full-time (more than an year)

    Pros

Residents are great and I am very lucky to work with a great team

    Cons

Pay is HORRIFIC embarassing low and managers and comanagers think they run everyone and everything. Hire ignorant uneducated and unexperience. Low pay is why there is such a high turn over. Unless your have 97% capacity (which isn't common) they only give you 32 hours

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Pay your employees a liveable salary and give your enrichment coordinatora 40 hours!!!!! It doesn't matter how many people are in the building to coordinate, decorate, shop, and lead activites. Also consider giving ECs an assistant to help!

I have been working at Holiday Retirement full-time (less than an year)

    Pros

Working with great residents and the opportunity to save money. Associates are a pleasure to be around.

    Cons

Budgets are too tight and there is still an air of paranoia that permeates the company. Accountability and rewards should be should be shared by all, from RD to dishwasher.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Follow through with plans to upgrade building budgets and increase food service choices and quality.
Don't wait for the competition to empty out the communities. Because they will.

I have been working at Holiday Retirement full-time (less than an year)

    Pros

If you love to work with seniors, this job is great. When co managers are all getting along they become like family. The job is NOT hard, it is one of the easiest I've ever had (I have been mainly in restraint management and now own my own cafe). Day to day is easy and repetitive, the sales prove more difficult. The expectations are clear though.

    Cons

The community manager teams don't always get along or work well together. Also the regional management is disorganized and inexperienced. Before I took the job I was encourage to talk to present community managers. I talked to three sets (six people) all told me not to take the job. They had varying reasons, but in the end it boiled down to little pay, high expectations, high turnover (people quit are not fired usually) unrealistic goals and disorganization amount upper management. Wish I listened.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Pair community managers together after they have had a chance to meet and make a decision to work together, throwing two very different couples together without ever working together is a BAD idea.

I have been working at Holiday Retirement full-time (more than an year)

    Pros

I enjoyed Getting to form relationships with Seniors and learn from all their wisdom. Knowing that you were trying to help seniors have a safe place to live

    Cons

The long hours, constantly changing management. Had 5 regional managers in 2 years each with their own style of managing. Unrealistic sales call quotas and way too many conference calls

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Please go back to the core values of this company which was the Holiday touch. I saw it disappear in the 2 years I worked there. The emphasis was put on fill the building not keep the resident satisfied.

I have been working at Holiday Retirement part-time (less than an year)

    Pros

The best part about this job is working with seniors. A community becomes like a family and the residents develop a special bond with you.

    Cons

There is no room for growth, constant turnover with staff, and the pay is terrible.

I have been working at Holiday Retirement full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

Housing and food is supplied so you have low debt which allows you to save money. The work is rewarding working with Seniors. It is exciting to see what an impact we have on their lives to help them have a better quality of life. They also offer an above average the plan and are self insured.

    Cons

Managers are not allowed to manage. Every move made and dollar spent has to be approved by several levels of management. Everything in the company is micro managed to the max. Money is the bottom line and all that is cared about. The Seniors come here for a new lifestyle and hope to stay until the end. This very rarely happens due to greed of massive yearly rent increase and multiple fees being added all the time.
Even though health insurance is provided and part is paid by the company, the prescription drug coverage and company that is used to manage it is a very poor disorganized company. We have not received our medication in time several times which has cause some health issues.
Very few opportunities for advancement if you are not on the sales side of the business.
They layoff employees as soon as they have gotten what the need from them.
Burn out level is high and the Companies own report of turnover rate for managers is 67%.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Let the Managers manage their property
Put more focus on retaining residents
Partner with groups to help residents that need assistance rather than just move them on
Pay the managers a decent salary for the hours that are worked
Have floating couples so teams can take vacations without work the other team OT.

Not sure any of these things will be take. Into consideration. I believe the company is headed down a path of no return. Residents stay because of the managers, not the company!

I worked at Holiday Retirement full-time

    Pros

Loved getting to know the residents in the communities. Work with their families. Great work satisfaction helping solve family issues by providing a safe place for their loved one to live.
Fun working environment being surrounded by the residents.
Between the salaries and bonuses, nice pay check when they would calculate properly.

    Cons

It seemed as if management was always in a panic mode. Even being a top producer did not matter to the team management. They were always moving the sales staff around to various communities. Too many meetings. Let the team do their work!

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Stop making so many last minute changes with your community leaders!
    Micro manage a little less!

I have been working at Holiday Retirement full-time (less than an year)

    Pros

i like working there because of the residents without them i would have quit by now

    Cons

they expect way to much of their employees, the combination of serving and housekeeping is just to demanding it is not possible to do a good job for one or the other it is to stressful and the residents are the ones sufferring they need to seperate jobs so that things would run more smoothly and efficiently it is probably the most stressfull job I have ever had and I like to do my work to the best of my ability and its not possible here.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

make these two seperate jobs and there wouldnt be such a big turnover or such high stress the girls I work with bust there butts and we still come up short you can do both jobs and do them well.
