Just above mimimum wage, only part-time , hard to work enough hours for vacation time, no medical/dental benefits

    Care-giver (Current Employee) Mesa, AZ

ProsIf you are proficient in caring for people, this is for you. No experience necessary except good knowledge of cooking and ability to do light housework. Thorough background check is done to protect the safety of clients.

ConsNumerous references are needed. Must work 6 months before any of your employment costs are re-imbursed. Be prepared to pay $200 to start your job. It is best to have a mid-size car with good size trunk space to transport walker/wheelchair, or both.

Advice to Senior ManagementI would suggest adding medical degree experienced members to your QA team. Allow care-givers to have full-time employment with benefits.

No, I would not recommend this company to a friend – I'm optimistic about the outlook for this company

Great as a fill-in. Stay away if looking a career.

Caregiver (Current Employee) Vero Beach, FL

ProsUnderstands the need for continuing education. In Vero beach, jobs are plentiful. The more you say "yes" to a job, the more they hours you get. CLEAN CLEAN, & CLEAN. They're great at adhering to the laws. Will step up for caregiver/home health employees, when need be. Really try to match client with caregiver. I worked over 45hrs andthey still call me for other jobs. I have to say no, but when i need the money I will say yes.

ConsHome Instead starts off at the highest paying in the area at a whopping 10 something an hour. Hope you like it! because that's where you'll stay forever! No loyalty points here. They charge clients more for night and weekends, but don't pass that on. OH wait, you get an extra 50 cents for weekends. Nothing more for night so I don't bother.
The mandatory meeting is a bunch of clapping and nonsense. Sit down, listen to how great it is, take a gift card and call it a day. You don't get to know your co-workers.

Advice to Senior ManagementLet the meeting's and Christmas party be about the employees. This is most likely the only time we speak with each other. let us enjoy it. Forty minutes should be max time to inform us on corp news, and salute the employee of the year. The pay is really not good. For a company that charges $22hr, and paying only a little over $10 and change an hr. Is fine in the beginning, but should change after a year. This job is demanding. your employees are asked to do work on the side & many don't. Not because the "fine print, or contract" but loyalty. Remember that. Caregivers are a dime a dozen, when you find one that stays....give them a raise!

    Working for Home Instead

    Companion/Caregiver (Current Employee)

ProsGreat flexibility since the job is per diem. You can call and take yourself off the schedule when you need to.

ConsThe pay is terrible. I have been there two years, and currently am paid 30 cents over minimum wage. Sometimes there may not be work available for weeks.

Advice to Senior ManagementPay people better.

    Staffing Coordinator

    Staff Coordinator (Current Employee)

ProsThey provide a great service to seniors that want to remain at home and independent.

ConsI agree with the Chicago posting in 11/2012, if that review had been posted before I accepted the same position in another state, I would not have accepted or even applied for the job. I give that person a lot of credit for lasting more than a year.

Advice to Senior ManagementLook at what is really required of this position and make some real changes in the position and salary.

Rewarding job. Great organization that appreciates their employees with support and encouragement but not compensation.

    Caregiver (Former Employee) Naples, FL

ProsRewarding job. Great managers. Flexible schedule. Ability to work with different clients. Choose your own schedule. Only have to commit to a shift a few days before.

ConsPoor compensation. Minimum hours of work potential are not guaranteed. Random schedule.

Advice to Senior ManagementEducate employees about potential for growth and encourage towards education.

    Its an ok job

CNA (Current Employee) Oklahoma City, OK

ProsI have good hours during the week, the staff is always nice.

ConsI came here with full time in mind, circumstances changed so part time is needed.while I have good weekday hours , im working 10 hrs every other weekend, this is not okay, I've asked about doing half a day on weekends but because of employee shortage and my clients unwillingness to want any one else,im stuck on 10 hr weekends. Not to mention I do a 12 day schedule before im off. Insurance would be nice. I'm currently looking for employment elsewhere

Advice to Senior ManagementJust because your short on staff- don't compromise the make your own hours statement, you will loose people who really like the job and do a good job.If people wanted 10hr shifts im sure they could have found a job with them plus benefits

Great job if you like fast paced and long hours for below average pay

Staff Coordinator (Former Employee) Franklin, WI

ProsThe biggest pro was knowing seniors were getting the help they needed. I also felt the "puzzle" of scheduling and billing to be rewarding when all of the pieces fell into place.

ConsThe biggest con would be lack of appreciation. You do not get paid based on your workload, but by the lowest offer they believe you will accept.

Advice to Senior ManagementWhen you have an employee doing above and beyond their job title, a raise may be the ticket to keeping them.

Taxing yet rewarding with time & monetary challenges.

    Caregiver (Current Employee) Phoenix, AZ

ProsYou can meat some wonderful people. Learning how other people live, their expectations and different ways of thinking & coping can be mind-broadening. Majority of Home Instead people are great to work with and are positive & encouraging. You have the ability to make a big difference in peoples lives and deaths.

ConsA bad day at work is when client dies. Injuries and exposure to contagious diseases are not uncommon. You may have TVs or music at extremely loud volumes all day (or night). Some clients are abusive and use profane language. Not uncommon to be referred to as a 'girl' and assumed to have little education or knowledge by both clients and their family and friends and other professionals dealing with your client. There is no paid time off. Schedules can change frequently. If your client is in the hospital, you may not have much or any work during that time. If your client dies, it may take awhile to get another full-time client.

Advice to Senior ManagementPlease add salaried emergency fill-in caregivers so clients are not without care until another caregiver can be found. This would also help caregivers take a couple of hours off to go to an appointment instead of having to miss a shift. Any assistance with maintaining caregivers' health would be appreciated - ideas how to exercise at a clients home (some of us have 24 hr shifts & are there several days in a row!) and pack & eat healthy meals there.
