I worked at Home Instead Senior Care part-time (less than a year)

    Pros

Getting to Care for individuals is very rewarding work.

    Cons

Absolutely no training, the management sits you in a room for 6 hours and shows videos about how to help someone in and out of a wheelchair. The pay is $9.25 an hour even if you have further education in Care giving. No benefits what so ever. If you speak up about another Caregiver's poor performance (even if it puts the client's health as risk) you will get reprimanded or terminated to cover themselves. Half the time if you need to get a hold of someone in an emergency or need help they are nowhere to be found. They do not treat their Caregivers with respect and anything goes as long as the client and caregiver keeps their mouth shut. I would NEVER hire Home Instead to Care for ANYONE in need, they are sloppy and endanger their clients that really need to be cared for in a responsible way.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Treat your Caregivers with respect, pay what their worth. Hire different managers, that actually care about Home Instead's Clients and their families.

I worked at Home Instead Senior Care part-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

A rewarding job caring for the elderly

    Cons

I work for Home Instead Senior Care for 5 years and three months. I enjoyed my job and enjoyed caring for the elderly. Would still be there if It wasn't for the new Human Resource women they hired. She didn't like the Care givers that were there for a long time. She lied to either get you fired or make you quit your job. Made sure you had very few hours and gave you clients that no one wanted. When you tried to collect unemployment, she lied and told them I was going to beat her up and that I swore at her.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Make sure when you hire a new Human Resource. That they understand that you are management and they still should abide by your rules and not make up their own. A lot of good caregivers left your company because of you new Human Resource.

I worked at Home Instead Senior Care part-time (more than a year)

    Pros

It took a few weeks to begin building hours and assignments, but eventually I averaged 20 - 25 hrs /wk.

    Cons

Right off the bat, they said they could not guarantee hours for me every week.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Respect your Care-Giver workers. They are the "engine" of your business. If management does not consider "work & life balance" of their workers, the workers are at high risk of "burning-out." In the end, I learned that even though I worked hard, and did my best to fulfill all that was required of me, including working weekends for almost 2 years, the management did not value me enough. I am so relieved to no longer work for this company!

I worked at Home Instead Senior Care part-time (less than a year)

    Pros

Applied online and was called for an interview the very next day. Working with the elderly using the services was rewarding

    Cons

Besides the low wages (which was expected taking this job) the owner was difficult to work with. From the time I was hired, I received a phone call every single day asking to take someone's shift because they had called off. Then when it came time to asking for ONE day off because I was moving, my request was denied. It seemed like it would have just been easier to call off. Everything was already set for that day so I informed them I would not be able to come in. The owner called me the day I was moving and left a voice mail stating that, "If you do not call me back within the next 30 minutes I am calling your apartment complex and informing them you no longer work here". Very unprofessional and drove me away.

I worked at Home Instead Senior Care full-time (more than a year)

    Pros

The only "Pro" of working with HISC was the ability to provide advocacy and assistance to the Elderly.

    Cons

The structure of HISC makes it nearly impossible to provide the best care possible to Client population. Community Liaison/Sales Person consistently promotes and guarantees service-levels to potential Clients, of which local business has absolutely no ability to provide.

The constant focus of Franchise Managers is to ensure their margins are favorable. Field-Staff are never allowed OT, even if it means consistency of care for the Client. Scheduling staff are paid on salary, and expected to work 10-12 hour days filling shifts, while recruitment consistently is left with an inability to hire, due to disgustingly low wages, again-as a result of ownership salivating over margins. Scheduling and recruitment staff are asked to break EEOC Law on a daily basis.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Although your franchise is a business endeavor, and an extension of your direct finances, consider realizing the nature of the business you are in, vs. your own material gain.

I have been working at Home Instead Senior Care as a contractor (less than a year)

    Pros

Work is very rewarding and clients are very appreciative of the services provided. Training program is fairly good, somewhat simplistic. The staff that works in the staffing office is spectacular. Person who answers the phone is very nice and pleasant to work with.

    Cons

The supervisors in the office represent a group of paraprofessionals who act like skilled clinicians however have no idea of how to treat employees. Frequently treat employees like they are children. They all need leadership training and their level of emotional intelligence is most likely off the charts in the negative range. Franchise owner is very nice however has these supervisors running the show. They are very condescending in their mannerisms with staff.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

For an industry that has a very high turnover rate, I would assume that the office supervisors would be more careful in the manner in which they deal with staff. In my 30 years of full time employment, this has to have been the very worst managers I have ever encountered in my career. Tremendous lack of supervision of the caregivers actual performance in the home settings and instead, clinical supervisor wholeheartedly believes the staff who work the most shifts. Quarterly meetings are a waste of time. Information could be communicated via webinar and eliminate all of the childish games for "morale building". Clean house of the clinical director and trainer and hire real leaders who treat people like professionals instead of children and the agency would be much better.

I have been working at Home Instead Senior Care part-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

I love knowing that I'm making a difference & helping to make things easier for seniors. The training is helpful if you have time in between shifts to attend.

    Cons

The owner only cares about the money. The office manager is a snake in the grass & lies to cover her tush. The best staff member they had in years was let go one day & then months later all was gone but the owner & manager. The turn over is frequent. We are expendable & it is shown. The pay is hard to live off of & all hours were cut due to Obama Care. We are expected to be housekeepers for the filthiest of people because they are paying. I have to agree with many reviews all over the US. Look elsewhere if you have that luxury.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Training, training, training. Owner needs to pay caregivers more. Show that you value your employees. Not everyone wants to do a raffle for a toaster. We want to be able to put food on our tables.
