I have been working at Honda of America Mfg. full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

The best part about working for Honda are the health benefits. Also, it is a good place to work if you are a hands on type of person. The associates are not unionized so there are very little restrictions as far as what you can and cannot do.

    Cons

Some of the challenges of working in the manufacturing plants at Honda is that production associates are promoted to engineering positions. This is difficult for degreed engineers because these associates are not held to the same standards, but yet they are given the same title and compensation. Also, engineers are treated the same or worse than the production associates. They are required to keep the sleeves of their uniforms rolled down at all times, keep breaks to 10 minutes and lunches to 30, cannot wear coats/jackets inside the facility even if they are company issued, there is little opportunity for advancement, wages are low, engineers are required to work the line when man power is low, vehicle purchase program is a joke (about 10% discount), etc... it goes on and on.

I have been working at Honda of America Mfg. full-time (more than a year)

    Pros

    Job security
Not much else to speak of

    Cons

    Lack of accountability in management
    Unattainable expectations
    Poor work life balance

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

At least in the purchasing world management needs to start supporting associates instead of continually tearing them down. The amount of work that is expected of associates is unrealistic and it only creates tension between associates. There is no longer a sense of "Honda", but instead it is CYA everywhere you turn.

I worked at Honda of America Mfg. full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

Good pay and benefits. Generally safe. Mostly a clean environment. Great product! More good people than the company morons have the aptitude to recognize. Good area to harvest workers from...or it would be if we didn't treat people like a commodity!

    Cons

"Good old boys system" in Management and HR. No system for checks and balances to establish respect for the individual. Hard workers are scorned by management because they may never have worked the floor. HR is a crime in the making. NOT professional! American management establishing their version of the Honda Way has led to much strife and criminal activity. People are scared for their jobs. There are many many workers not willing to give their ALL. I attribute this to poor leadership! If someone in management has a beef with you they have many tools to "get" you and are willing to destroy careers to do it! Very sad times. Caring about your work is running second fiddle to people who "think" they are running the show. Many fat cats doing practically nothing to produce the product. Incompetent white collars everywhere. Poor leadership and advancement procedures. Perhaps a refection of the greater societal woes of our times??

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Get back to respecting your workers. Get rid of the ones who don't want to work....go to the spot and open your eyes. If you are part of the management problem then FIX it! Get out on the floor and take a day or two each month and use your hands and mind to WORK. Get rid of the HR establishment and for heavens sake give the good worker temps a full time position if they show that they are good workers. Be fair and be hesitant to trash peoples lives!

    Pros

Very stable company. Never a layoff. Great benefits at zero cost. Always a bonus in November.

    Cons

Pay is comfortable but not great. Lots of fat and overhead that needs to be trimmed.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Don't make morale any worse by reducing medical benefits any further.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Look at the current leadership ans assess the issues and the turnover rates because they tell a story. Listen to the employees and give them some freedom to make decisions.

I have been working at Honda of America Mfg. full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

    Great place to get experience.
An industry that drives constant innovation in its products.
Good location, Columbus is a hidden gem in the midwest.
    Good medical benefits.

    Cons

No flexibility in the manufacturing departments.

Too many "benefits" left to individual department discretion - no consistency across the company.

Salary is generally 20% less than similar jobs at other OEM's.

No ability to easily move across the company - department managers can, and often do, block associates from changing jobs.

Poor communication of goals and objectives

Company has shifted from a culture of building consensus among stake holders to being managed from a top-down direction.

    No accountability for poor performance.

No effort, on the part of the company, to retain good engineers who work hard. No incentive for young engineers to stay and buy in.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    1. Stop benchmarking other Honda plants and take time to SERIOUSLY benchmark other OEMs in terms of salaries and benefits. We're losing good people at an alarming rate. The problem with only looking to Honda DNA for innovation is your family tree never branches.

    2. Stop preaching about going to the spot and actually do it.

    3. Consensus among stakeholders was once a fundamental way we did business. We need to get back to this way of doing business. Being top-down is no different that many of our competitors.

    4. Stop promoting people only based on business needs and actually reward high performers for just simply being good at their jobs. Someone doesn't need to lead people to be great at what they do.

I have been working at Honda of America Mfg. full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

    Job security up to now.
Very good pay and benefits so far.
In the beginning you were the expert and decentralized management was the philosophy. Now centralized management is the way.
Safety, Quality and the customer was the goal, now only Quantity.

    Cons

    Very hard and physical work.
The Honda philosophy is dead and forgotten.
Management has no clue as to how to run this company efficiently.
Moral is worse than I have ever seen it.
All tools used by the associates (suggestions, quality etc.) have been so diluted they are worthless.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Learn and understand the Honda philosophy!
Stop finding the blame and find the problems.
    Quality costs nothing!
    Listen to the experts.
Solve the problem don't band-aid it!
Advancement from within is very slight.

I have been working at Honda of America Mfg. full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

    - Pay
    - You do get medical benefits......but they are being reduced.
    - On site wellness center.............if you have the time or energy to go.

    Cons

    - Hard Physical Labor
    - Long daily hours. Some departments at Engine plant are 7 days mandatory
    - You get 15 days vacation but on average 15 weekends are taken away by forced mandatory production. No real benefit here!
    - Most job injuries are disputed by the company forcing the employee to fight for the benefits deserved
    - No job security for those with many years of service. Jobs are being contracted out on a regular basis.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    - Start talking to the employees that have put many years in making the company what it was!
    - Promote people based on experience, knowledge and training, not on who you know.
