    Pros

    Cons

I worked at Horace Mann full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

Retirement Benefits have made the long time I was there easier. At least I left with something to show for.

    Cons

Too many chiefs that get paid really well for doing nothing. They do not listen to their agents and employees and every week try and change different strategies. One hand does not know what the other is doing!! It amazes me how long they have existed and how they are able to get things done on the fly. Their rates used to be good, however, that is not the case anymore. In addition, customer service is a thing of the past. They really don't care about their customers!!

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Start listening to your employees who are in the trenches and can see and hear what is going on in the field. Get rid of many of the chiefs that do nothing an collect a nice paycheck. Trim the fat.

I have been working at Horace Mann full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

They have a nice match for the 401K program. They have decent medical , the lunch room is nice and big for pot luck lunches.

    Cons

The management seem to tell you anything you want to hear , when in reality something else is going on behind the scenes. The constant telling you to just bear with us changes are coming and they are going to make things better, gets old as the changes have been coming for over 2 years and they are not getting better . Fellow co- workers are leaving in record amounts, as they are tired of being beat down waiting for the good in the changes. Their pay grade is extremely low compared to other companies in this industry.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Say what you mean and mean what you say! A more honest work environment would help you to maintain your workers.

Politics dominates over good management, integrity, good claims handling and intelligence.

    Pros

Some very nice, smart co-workers. Good benefits.

    Cons

Unfortunately it's the nice smart employees who work hard, have integrity, and are good at claims adjusting that are leaving in the PD department. Very uneven workloads and then the employees with the high workloads are the ones being targeted as not doing enough. Employees leaving are not being replaced and temps are hired to do busy work, not giving the adjusters the real help they need. If a temp. figures this out, they are gone. Maybe management's plan is to stop writing auto claims and open up a coffee shop because eventually the remaining employees will be better suited for that environment..

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Pay attention to what is going on in the PD department if you do not want good employees to continue leaving. If that is your goal, keep doing what you're doing- nothing to stop the politics and undermining of good employees.

I have been working at Horace Mann full-time (more than an year)

    Pros

Nice coworkers, decent time off. FINALLY have a CEO with vision!!

    Cons

Outdated IT - shareholders want their money, but need to dump it into the 20th century technology - at the least!! Systems constantly glitching and going down. Unrealistic workload. Good employees leaving - or being driven away. Only ones remaining are supervisors and their moles, and they continue sucking the life out of anyone new that walks through the door. NO training - but promises for training. Weak attempts at promotions from within, but without tools and training, if you are not seasoned PD adjuster, you are doomed. Expensive insurance, top heavy company that does NOT respect, care or listen to employees. Poor compensation for adjusters because the workload has gotten out of control due to high turnover and you are forced to work 10-12 hour days and WEEKENDS just to keep your job from jeopardy! Don't replace adjusters that leave - but had a "study" done that showed adjusters workload unrealistic - but nothing changes!

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

LISTEN to your employees - don't tell them the same lies and promise that "you know PD is broken and it will be fixed by Sept" and then take your "favorites" and put them on research projects, or lighten their load, while the people left are drowning and being mistreated by being forced to work 10+ hours per day with outdated platforms and IT and no real training. You need to clear out management or supervisors for PD - too much favoritism - rules are followed only for some - if you are the supervisor's mole, you get protected, promoted and a lighter load and can sit and talk and leave during the day for coffee...if you're not the supervisor's mole, and don't make her shine - you are micro managed and worked to death! REALLY LISTEN AND REALLY BE TRANSPARENT and TREAT all employees the same!!

I have been working at Horace Mann full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

New CEO, improved distribution marketplace, greater focus on life cycle for target market, emphasis on teamwork model concepts, good benefits, and industry education programs

    Cons

Challenging technology systems that undermine processes and improvements. Various layers of organizational structure that impedes delivery on Customer experience and processes. Work life balance is challenging and needs improvement.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Continue to instill the company's brand message, throughout the target market life cycle and life experiences. Invest in distribution force, technology, training, education, claims, operations and sales. Reevaluate the emphasis on layers of VPs in the company ranks and how each supports the company's goals and directions.

I worked at Horace Mann full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

    My co-workers were great.
    3 weeks of vacation.
The building in Irving, TX where I worked was nice with plenty of close parking.

    Cons

    Health coverage is expensive.
The Vice President of claims left the company in early 2012. Not that it was great while he was there but the new regime has made numerous bad decisions. There has been a steady stream of adjusters leaving the company since. The training for new adjusters is awful and new hires are thrust into their positions where they are quickly overwhelmed with a large number of claims to handle. Most of your day is spent taking calls on other adjusters claims because they weren't available to take the call because they were probably taking a call on someone else's claim. A vicious circle which results in poor customer service and an unhappy staff.

Salaries need to raised. There are many other insurance claims offices in the area. You need to up the starting salary to attract better prospects. You have hired and trained many to do claims and then they leave because other companies will hire them at a much better salary.

Very few opportunities for advancement. Instead of developing personnel for management positions they hire off the street.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

The training needs to be improved. The new hires who have no prior claims experience also need a mentor who can guide them on how to handle their claims more efficiently.

    Pros

Fair Pay, 401k match, nice coworkers, willing to make drastic changes under new leadership

    Cons

TERRIBLE training, old technology, detached upper management , takes far too long to fill empty seats putting burden on the employees that are still working everyday.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Don't wait 9 months to fill the positions of people that have left it puts too large a burden on those that had tried to stay the course.
