I have been working at Horace Mann full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

The people that work at Horace Mann are great. Good benefits, and liberal vacation time.

    Cons

The company is currently going through many changes. Favoritism is still a big issue. When applying for internal positions it takes forever to hear whether you will be interviewed if you hear at all. Lower level employees are treated as though they do not matter. Many highly experienced employees have been laid off due to job elimination, and this has left huge gaps. Many of the people in upper management overtly show disdain for lower level employees suggestions and opinions.

    Advice to Management

    Get it together.

I worked at Horace Mann full-time

    Pros

Coworkers were great. My supervisor was awesome. Nice bathrooms and break room. Good recognition ceremonies. 3 weeks of vacation.

    Cons

High work volume. Dealing with upset customers from other workers who have dropped the ball. The better worker you are, the more you pick up everyone else's slack. Felt like I was tied to the phone. Too many chiefs and not enough Indians. Lots of disgruntled workers and unhappy customers.

    Advice to Management

Hire more ground level workers and less AVPS. Listen to your employees. Help those that are struggling to succeed by spending more one on on time if needed. Don't pile on more work to those that do a good job- they then start to struggle and their work suffers making the customers suffer.

    Pros

You'll hear employees talk about "The Horace Mann Family". That's exactly what it feels like, a family. The people are the best asset this company has. There is a genuine desire here to help others succeed. It's rare that you'll find someone not willing to help a customer or fellow employee. The benefits are decent. Vacation time is a bit above average. There are plenty of opportunities for development and education, if you want them.

    Cons

Be prepared for ever changing priorities. Many ideas and processes barely implement before being scrapped and new processes and ideas begin being formulated. Lots of restructuring is taking place. Technology is extremely outdated, but is in the beginning stages of being updated

    Advice to Management

Work with your employees strengths, and listen to them.

I have been working at Horace Mann full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Love the agents and customers. Enjoy helping customers save money while giving them the best coverage and keeping them as customers.

    Cons

The new management system has made it difficult to "perform" as expected. I can get kudos for providing excellent customer service but then get negative comments from quality management. The whole new system has brought morale down throughout the entire call center. Most of the people I have worked with have left the company and many more are seeking other employment.

    Advice to Management

Help us help our agents and customers by maintaining a consistent number of representatives to serve them. Stop moving the reps we have into newly created positions when there is no replacement staff. Appreciate those of us who are committed and compensate us accordingly. We are tired and overworked but still make the effort, the best that we can, even though we are under the weather or have our own personal issues. Quality management only seems to choose your worst calls and tear you down, no matter how hard you try. All of the employees in QM failed at being a call center rep. What makes them experts now?

I have been working at Horace Mann full-time

    Pros

The niche market of educators Horace Mann insures are generally wonderful to work with on claims. The management probably intends to support their staff. New CEO has a vision and is attempting improvements. It looks very positive that she will be successful.

    Cons

Management completely out of touch with day-to-day reality of working claims very understaffed with outdated systems. The claims office in Irving is small, with almost no room for advancement. Most leave within 1 -2 years either because they can't keep up with the workload and are terminated, or leave of their own accord.

    Advice to Management

Management needs to consider that the high-stress office environment in Irving will neither produce the results they desire nor retain quality employees. Employees have a completely overlooked need to have a vision of a possible career at Horace Mann, not just be told to work more hours to dig us out of the hole and things will get better.

I have been working at Horace Mann full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Good benefits and vacation time, decent salary. Beautiful building and campus, though a bit dated inside. Great new CEO with an exciting vision for the future.

    Cons

Jaded and aging culture. Disjointed communication between divisions makes it seem like productivity can be an uphill battle. Transition period has made everyone on edge, making the environment less than pleasurable to be a part of.

    Advice to Management

Increase (human) interaction between divisions. Adopt less "corporate" attributes and be a bit more employee-centric. As with many companies, certain managers are clouded by their ambition and chase away talent.
