    Great starting point

    Anonymous Employee (Former Employee)

ProsFriendly people - Most people that work at Horace Mann are very pleasant and are committed to the company effort to better serve educators' insurance needs

Solid benefits - Benefits are a bit more expensive than most places but they are very solid. Pension + 401k, Health, Dental, Vision, Pet, Life, etc.

Job variety - There is great potential to work in different areas inside the company if you wish

ConsTough politics - Politics make it very hard for the company to make any huge strides. Always moving in baby steps.

Spotty management - Some managers are notorious for protecting bad employees and not effectively managing their areas to the point that it becomes a detriment to the company as a whole

Rigid paygrades - The focus on being "fair" prevents exceptional workers from earning more than average or below average workers

Wonderful people + woeful management = bipolar company

P&C Actuary (Former Employee) Springfield, IL

ProsCoworkers aren't just people, they become your friends. Good vacation/sick/personal time even for new hires. Big company in a small town (100K population) so traffic isn't hard. Free parking, flexible hours, big donator to community and target market. Yearly bonus when targets are hit.

ConsTechnology is hilariously old, system run on mainframes from 1950s/60s. Insanely hard to get management to actually do anything that moves the company forward. Way too much management, red tape, and lack of interest in new ideas. Too many upper-level folks from All State, State Farm, etc. bringing their cronies in. This is HM, not AS or SF, so run it as such!

Job descriptions change yearly, but you never actually do those things. Seating arrangements hardly make sense, so much change in personnel makes your team too fluid to really gel. Performance reviews are a perpetual joke. No matter your skill level or knowledge, they'll can you if they want to. Big brain drain recently: too many drones, not enough innovators, frustration sets in quickly among those who want to move forward instead of stagnate personally and in your career.

Advice to Senior ManagementCut your numbers in half. Then cut your pay about 25% and distribute it where it belongs -- the employees who actually do the work. Listen to your employees -- if they tell you not to hire someone (twice!), don't! And for the love of god, bite the financial bullet and upgrade your technology to the 21st (or at least 20th) century.

my experience at horace mann presented me with many challenges and opporunities

Account Executive (Former Employee) Orange Park, FL

Prosniche market, good reputation, longevity, financially stable, team atmosphere, good support from upper management, unlimited income potential and autonomy based

Consdownside is you are a captive agent, lited to selling to educators price was on automobile insurance, and no longer provides health insurance to employees

Advice to Senior Managementdiversity to allow other people other than educators to purchase horace mann products and a more competitive tier pricing structure

Rewarded for the work I performed-fair in performance reviews

Anonymous Employee (Former Employee) Springfield, IL

ProsFamily oriented company. One of the largest employers in Springfield, IL, decent benefits (company funded pension and a matching 401k program).

Consa slight bit behind the times in regards to salary and training and management style in some departments

Very good company to work for, probably one of the best entry level jobs in Springfield

    Customer Care Representative (Current Employee)

ProsBeginning pay is great for entry level
Yearly raises (not big ones but better than nothing)
Generous vacation/personal/sick/holiday days (10 paid holidays off!) (1 week vaca after 6 months, 2 more weeks at your year, then 3 weeks a year after that. 10 sick days and 2 personal days per year)
    Great camaraderie with coworkers
This company actually cares about their employees.
    Yearly performance bonus.
Shift differential pay for later shifts.

ConsMiscommunication is apparent. Some of the "consultants" that the reps have to call give different information on the same subject depending who you are talking to
Managers are very very busy. You may have to ask a couple times before something is resolved.
Some of the agents are extremely lazy and will not do their own work, they call and expect you to do it for them.

Advice to Senior ManagementPlease train our agents better!!! if they had a common grasp of some of the things that we do it would make the job easier.

    Claims Adjusting

    Claims Intern (Former Employee)

    ProsFun People to be around
    Very Relaxed environment
People are very helpful to new employees
    Recognition is a big deal

ConsSenior management needs to loosen up and stop micro-managing to the nth degree
The work schedule needs to be more flexible to the employees with families

Advice to Senior ManagementWith every place there will be flaws. However, Horace Mann is a great place to work for those people that are looking for a start within the insurance industry.
