    Current Employee - Production Supervisor

I have been working at Hormel full-time

    Pros

-Great compensation for this position; especially compared to industry-wide.
    -Good benefits also.
-Wide variety of products and brands to work with.

    Cons

-Production supervisors can usually work 12 hrs or more on a regular basis
-Work/life balance is tough prior to reaching a certain career level for production.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

-Act on the feedback that you receive from across the company. Clearly some people are meant to be leaders and deserve the positions they are in, whereas others are horrible leaders/unethical individuals but are in their position simply because of years with the company.

    Pros

Work is challenging. People are excellent. Opportunities for career growth is second to none. Talent is recognized and awarded. All around great company to work for.

    Cons

Company is highly conservative, and runs lean. Puts a lot of stress and pressure on middle management.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Continue to make policies work-life-balance-friendly to retain young talent.

Current Employee - Production Supervisor in Wichita, KS
Current Employee - Production Supervisor in Wichita, KS

I have been working at Hormel full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

Better pay than Seaboard, Smith-field, Farmland, Swift (JBS), or Tyson.
Much less stress than average packing house jobs ...

    Cons

Unless you have a frat brother, uncle, or god-parent as a VP, or are a minority, you will find promotions VERY slow ...and unless you really understand being on your feet 8 to 10 hours a day working in cold cold environments six to seven days a week ..you might be in for a shock ..

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Take the patronage out of the internal job bid system, and make it a level playing field, stop hiding choice jobs for favorite employees.
Quit trying to bring in young college kids who are completely over whelmed by working 10 plus hours days 6 and 7 days a week, and poach more employees from other companies.

I have been working at Hormel as an intern (less than an year)

    Pros

Good pay. Mostly good people to learn from. Give you lots of responsibility and tasks to complete. What you do is value added for the company in most cases. Learn a lot about yourself as a manager and how well you will do in this type of field.

    Cons

I don't have anything to write.

I have been working at Hormel

    Pros

    Pay was good
    Company car
Lots of Perks ie cell phone, home cable paid for, and good benefits
    good training and continuing training
Great people-management is nice and your co-workers are good (some people suck but that's everywhere you go)
    You get to travel

    Cons

The future growth in the sales program is a bit limited. If I were to have stayed with Hormel in sales I would still be doing what I was doing when I first started. There is no difference between an entry sales position and a senior sales position except for the pay and territory size. If you have aspirations of moving into corporate be prepared to live in Austin (no not texas, which would be cool), Minnesota and go to Torgies everyday and live next to your boss. There should be the plant in Austin with corporate in Minneapolis where there is a good living situation away from the job.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

I think management was great however there should be more employee involvment and more understanding of women and minorities. Hormel is somewhat whitebread, and wheat tastes good too ;-) Overall I liked my experience with hormel and I would recommend that someone start off their career with them.

    Pros

Great company. Good Pay. Ample ability to move up if you are willing to relocate. Great industry reputation amongst peers.

    Cons

Relocation is a necessity. Headquarters are not based in a major city but in Austin Minnesota. Very conservative and risk averse company.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Move some of the corporate jobs such as marketing to Minneapolis. This will help keep and attract a more talented work force.
