    Pros

I was able to learn a new branch of the maritime industry since I had never worked with workboats previously. My coworkers were wonderful and capable people if given the chance to excel, which they weren't.

    Cons

I worked with a lot of former USCG that had little to no experience in the commercial maritime world and yet held high positions in the Company, for what, status? Please... The level of micromanagement is crazy. Most of the women can barely get past the title of "Administrator" because its the "good ole boys" club. They are not family friendly. They say they are, but words don't match their actions. And if the COO is in a bad mood like he was one day, he comes to the monthly meeting and tells the VGMs to fire one person from each of their boats and to each department head the same treatment. Awesome, right? I find that Hornbeck is more like a high school teenager than the "company of choice"; more concerned with how they look and are perceived by others superficially.

    Advice to Management

Quit building and focus on the problems you already have. Hire competent industry veterans and shake that USCG fetish you have. You need more engineers working for you than deck people. Take your external audits and inspections seriously and don't argue. Stop creating more paperwork and forms, you've done more than what is required. Cut down on the New Hire Orientation. Its too long and its too "Go Hornbeck". Teach them safety and ops stuff and then release them to their boats. I could go on...

    Pros

The rotation is good. The insurance is OK. They provide transportation from the airport to Fourchon.

    Cons

The "travel " pay is terrible. You pay for your flight to and from if you fly into New Orleans. They only pay 370 for someone who flies long distances. If you don't work your full hitch then you don't get any travel pay. Crew changes are the worst that I have encountered while in the industry. No one has a clue of what is going on from the crew coordinator to the Officers at home that are getting a half days pay to set this up. There is no communication with the on coming crew.

    Advice to Management

Start paying for travel and pay for hotel rooms for the guys that fly in the night before.

    Pros

Good pay good benifits and very capable people.

    Cons

Poor managment on larger vessels. Micro management and indecision. This company needs to stick to mud boats where they do very well.

    Advice to Management

Let the profesionals run the ships and quit micro managaging.

    Pros

Most of the time you get your checks without errors. If there are errors in it the usually have it fixed and put on the very next check two weeks later.

    Cons

They are not very understanding when it comes to the employees personal life. They routinely ask people to work two and three month hitches to cover for undercrewing.

    Advice to Management

Do not intimidate employees to get them to work long hitches or to get them to work for less pay. People understand that sometimes pay has to be adjusted, but to hold a persons job over thier head to squeeze everybit of productivity out of that person you can is just not right. It becomes a safety issue when people believe they have to work 16 hour days or risk being fired.

    Pros

The pay is good and plenty of room for advancement. The benefits are also good. Free uniforms are a plus when you are lucky enough to recieve them.

    Cons

Communication from upper management is always inaccurate and untruthful. The company does not deserve the red ship. They have no respect for the special needs of the vessel and too cheap to maintain anything properly. Lack of respect towards the crew and what exactly are we supposed to do with a plaque? Thanks for nothing.

    Advice to Management

You better wake up. Critical personnel are sending off resumes left and right thanks to the 30 hour crewboat ride. You come onboard and tell us how important we are then treat us like we are nothing. Lies, lies, and more lies.
